The superconducting tokamak is being built in Hefei, with China’s stated goal of demonstrating net fusion power gain and fusion-based electricity generation around 2030.
What is China’s BEST “artificial sun”?
BEST stands for Burning Plasma Experimental Superconducting Tokamak. It is an experimental fusion facility under construction in Hefei, Anhui, intended to move China’s fusion programme from basic research toward engineering and a demonstration of fusion-based electricity generation.
A tokamak uses magnetic fields to confine extremely hot plasma so researchers can study fusion reactions under controlled conditions. BEST is a planned experimental machine, not a commercial power station. The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) described the facility on April 17, 2026, as one of China’s major controlled-fusion projects, “poised to attempt the world’s first fusion energy power generation demonstration.”
Has BEST passed the halfway mark?
An October 1, 2026 secondary report said BEST’s assembly had passed the halfway point and that the facility complex had been handed over for use. That is a reported construction update: the exact percentage has not been established here by a matching official CAS or BEST announcement.

Passing halfway indicates progress toward assembling the machine. It does not mean that the tokamak is complete, operating, or has produced fusion electricity. Construction progress and performance results are different milestones.
When is BEST expected to demonstrate electricity generation?
CAS stated on January 19, 2026, that the project hopes to demonstrate net fusion power gain and electricity generation around 2030. “Around 2030” is a target, not a guaranteed completion date or a report of power already being delivered.

Net fusion power gain means a fusion experiment produces more fusion energy than the energy supplied to heat and sustain the plasma, under the relevant accounting used for the experiment. A demonstration of electricity generation is a further engineering goal: it would involve converting fusion energy into electricity. The CAS target describes what BEST aims to demonstrate; it is not proof that either milestone has been achieved.

EAST, the Experimental Advanced Superconducting Tokamak, is an earlier operating device in Hefei, often called China’s “artificial sun.” Its achievement is a plasma-confinement result; BEST is being built to pursue engineering and a power-generation demonstration. The milestones are related, but they measure different things.

EAST’s long-duration operation matters because a future fusion power system must sustain controlled plasma while managing heat, particles, magnets and neutron loads. But a plasma-duration record does not establish that a machine produces more fusion energy than it consumes.
Is China’s artificial sun producing power yet?
No source cited here reports BEST generating electricity for the grid. The available official CAS material describes a planned demonstration, while the halfway-assembly claim comes from secondary reporting. The construction report therefore should not be read as evidence of net energy gain, commercial operation or power supply.
