China’s AI-Course Boom: Real Skills Demand Meets Fear of Falling Behind

China’s market for DeepSeek and other AI courses exploded after DeepSeek R1 was released on January 20, 2025. The boom reflects a real need for workplace skills, but also a sales strategy that turns uncertainty about automation into paid promises of prosperity.

Some courses offer useful structure, practice and support. Many basic lessons duplicate free material. The sensible test is not whether a seller invokes fear, but whether the course teaches current, job-relevant skills that you can verify before paying.

How DeepSeek triggered a new course market

DeepSeek R1’s January 20, 2025 release quickly became a commercial opportunity. China Daily reported that enterprises, individual sellers and online communities began offering training on the model and on AI use more broadly.

On Xiaohongshu, also known as RedNote, guides ranged from a few yuan to several hundred yuan. Posts used urgent language such as “If you don’t learn how to use AI today, you’ll be left behind tomorrow,” alongside pitches titled “How to use DeepSeek to earn money.” Paid WeChat groups and online communities advertised “exclusive” resources, while course descriptions bundled basic tool use, prompt writing, industry applications and ways to make money with AI.

A DeepSeek-course tag on Xiaohongshu had received almost 20 million views since the model’s release, showing the scale of attention rather than proving that the courses were effective. The same audience could encounter a one-off guide, a subscription community or a high-priced package with little information about the instructor or curriculum.

What sellers are actually packaging

  • Getting started with a chatbot and its interface.
  • Writing prompts for text, research or office tasks.
  • Examples aimed at particular industries.
  • Claims that AI can create a new income stream.
  • Access to a private group, recordings or supposedly exclusive templates.

These components are not automatically worthless. The problem is that a familiar list of beginner topics can be presented as a scarce shortcut, even when equivalent introductions are available at no cost.

Why anxiety is such an effective sales tool

The strongest marketing relies on the fear of becoming unemployable or missing an economic shift. One user described the approach this way: “By touting AI as a necessary survival tool, these people are selling anxiety.” That is evidence of how the conversation is experienced by buyers, not a measurement of national psychological distress.

Yan Huaizhi, an associate professor at Beijing Institute of Technology, offered a two-sided explanation. “On one hand, this trend reflects people’s desire to learn new skills. On the other hand, it epitomizes how some agencies exploit the knowledge gap to make quick profits,” he said. He also noted that selling tools to people eager to make money is a lucrative business model.

The distinction matters. Fear can motivate someone to learn a genuinely useful skill, but urgency is not proof of quality. A countdown, a promise of “exclusive” prompts or a claim that everyone else is already profiting does not establish that a course is current, accurate or suitable for a particular job.

The economic case for learning AI is real

There is a substantial reason Chinese workers and employers are seeking practical AI capability beyond social-media hype. Figures reported by Xinhua from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology in 2025 describe a large and expanding industry.

Indicator Reported figure Qualification and relevance
Value of China’s core AI industry More than 1.2 trillion yuan Ministry of Industry and Information Technology figure reported for 2025; it indicates an economy large enough to create demand for specialized skills.
AI companies in China More than 6,200 Ministry of Industry and Information Technology figure reported for 2025; the count does not mean every company is hiring beginners or using the same tools.
Manufacturing adoption More than 30 percent Share of manufacturing enterprises with annual main-business turnover of at least 20 million yuan that had adopted AI by the end of 2025.

Those numbers support learning that is tied to a real task: analyzing documents, automating a repeatable workflow, improving production planning or building a portfolio project. They do not support the idea that a short online class guarantees a new business or a higher salary.

What China’s education policy is changing

China’s Ministry of Education has called for an AI-plus-education action plan in 2026. Its direction includes AI courses throughout school and university education, upgrades to vocational programs, public AI-literacy resources, micro-credentials and employment-oriented training.

Formal instruction and public resources could reduce the information scarcity that allows sellers to charge high prices for basic explanations. They may also make credentials more meaningful if employers can understand what a micro-credential covers and how the learner was assessed. Until those standards are consistent, a certificate alone is not evidence of competence.

Free alternatives already exist. China Daily reported free DeepSeek and AI tutorials on Bilibili, including a local-deployment video with more than 2 million views. Tsinghua University and Zhejiang University have also offered free lectures or guides. Availability, language, depth and update frequency vary, so “free” does not always mean complete; it does mean a buyer can often test the basics before committing money.

When paying for a course can make sense

A paid course is most defensible when it provides something that scattered tutorials do not: a coherent sequence, original exercises, feedback, access to a qualified instructor, current examples and help applying the material to a specific role. Convenience can have value, but it should be priced as convenience rather than disguised as guaranteed income.

Learning route Strength What to check
Free official or university material Low financial risk and generally transparent authorship Whether lessons are current, complete and relevant to your task
Beginner prompting course Fast orientation for someone starting from zero Original practice, model coverage and whether it teaches verification rather than just prompt formulas
Hands-on project or deployment course More evidence of workplace ability Required hardware, software versions, code or data, instructor support and maintenance after model updates
“Make money with AI” program May explain a particular business workflow Specific deliverables, documented assumptions, costs, legal obligations and evidence that the method works beyond testimonials

A buyer’s verification checklist

  1. Identify the instructor. Look for a real name, relevant work history and a way to evaluate previous teaching. Anonymous authority claims are a warning sign.
  2. Request the syllabus and a sample. Confirm that the course includes exercises or projects rather than only recorded demonstrations and prompt collections.
  3. Check the update policy. DeepSeek and related tools can change quickly. A course should state when lessons were last revised and what happens after a major model update.
  4. Match the outcome to your job. “Learn AI” is too vague. Define whether you need document analysis, coding assistance, local deployment, manufacturing use or another measurable capability.
  5. Read the refund terms before paying. Note the refund window, exclusions, recurring charges and whether access to a private group ends when you request a refund.
  6. Compare the price with free material. If the paid lesson only explains interface buttons or beginner prompts already covered by public tutorials, you are paying mainly for packaging.

Can an AI course really help someone make money?

It can teach a marketable workflow, but no course can establish demand for you. Income depends on a customer’s problem, the quality of the result, competition, operating costs and compliance with employment, copyright and data-protection rules. A promise of quick earnings is especially weak when it does not name the service, buyer, pricing model, evidence and risks.

The more credible path is to use training to produce something inspectable: a documented automation, a working prototype, a portfolio case study or a measurable improvement in an existing job. Those outputs can be tested by an employer or client. A collection of copied prompts cannot.

Will people be left behind without AI training?

Not learning every new model does not automatically make someone unemployable. The practical risk is narrower: a worker may lose opportunities if colleagues can complete valuable tasks faster, or if an employer introduces AI and the worker cannot evaluate or supervise it. The answer is targeted literacy—understanding what a tool can do, where it fails, how to protect confidential information and how to check its output.

That approach also protects learners from the course market’s most aggressive message. AI adoption is substantial, but the evidence supports building useful capability, not buying panic. Start with free, reputable instruction; define a task; practice on safe, non-confidential material; and pay only when a course adds demonstrable guidance, feedback or support.
