China has unveiled the exterior design of Wangyu, a developing lunar spacesuit intended for the country’s planned crewed Moon missions. The design was presented on September 28, 2024, in Chongqing. Chinese officials describe protection against lunar dust and thermal extremes, along with mobility features for surface work. It is not yet a publicly certified flight suit: as of March 2025, Wangyu and the other major lunar-landing systems remained in preliminary development.
What China actually unveiled
The China Manned Space Agency (CMSA) presented the suit’s exterior design at the third Spacesuit Technology Forum. The announcement did not publish a complete technical specification, flight-certification status, mass, operating pressure, maximum extravehicular-activity duration or final mission assignment. The distinction matters: a public design reveal is not the same as a flight-qualified lunar suit.

CMSA said development began in 2020, with goals including a lightweight, compact, reliable and safe suit. Officials also described several technological breakthroughs, but those statements are progress reports rather than independent evidence of qualification. The initial announcement is documented by Xinhua and the Chinese government.
What Wangyu looks like
The publicly shown suit is predominantly white with red markings. Chinese descriptions say the upper-arm stripes draw on the ribbons of Dunhuang flying-apsara artwork, while the lower-leg pattern resembles rocket exhaust flames. The symbolism gives the suit a distinct national design language; the white outer layer is also consistent with the general need to manage solar heating in an airless environment, although the cited announcement does not assign a specific thermal performance to the color.

In February 2025, Chinese authorities gave the suit its official name, Wangyu, translated as “gazing into the cosmos.” The name was selected after a public solicitation that generated about 9,000 proposals. The associated rover was named Tansuo, or “to explore the unknown.” The naming announcement also links Wangyu conceptually with China’s existing Feitian (“flying into space”) extravehicular suit family. See the official naming report at gov.cn.
What the suit is intended to handle
CMSA says Wangyu’s protective materials are intended for the lunar thermal environment and dust. The Moon combines vacuum, severe temperature changes, abrasive surface dust and reduced gravity. Dust is particularly troublesome because it can abrade or contaminate seals, joints, connectors, tools, vehicles and habitat interfaces, and is difficult to remove in a vacuum.
The public material does not establish detailed radiation shielding, micrometeoroid performance or exact temperature limits. Nor does an image establish pressure, cooling capacity or service life. Those are qualification questions still to be answered.

Mobility shown in the demonstration
CMSA footage showed people wearing the gear while walking, squatting, bending, kneeling on one knee and climbing a ladder. Flexible gloves, a panoramic visor and low-gravity-adapted joints are intended to support those activities. The demonstration shows the design’s human-factors objectives on Earth; it does not prove performance in lunar vacuum, reduced gravity, dust or a long-duration surface excursion.
A lunar suit must do more than keep a person alive. It must allow an astronaut to recover from a fall, kneel to collect samples, climb lander ladders, operate tools, enter a rover and work while carrying equipment. More protective layers can increase stiffness and mass, while dust-resistant seals can make joints harder to flex. Gloves must contain pressure while preserving enough dexterity for geology and maintenance. A large visor improves field of view but adds structural, glare, impact and thermal-management requirements. Cameras provide useful documentation and mission-control visibility but consume power and generate data and heat.
What remains undisclosed
Public Chinese reports do not specify Wangyu’s:
- Mass, pressure level or primary oxygen supply.
- Carbon-dioxide removal and cooling-system design.
- Maximum EVA duration or consumables and recharge procedures.
- Communications architecture and radiation-dose limits.
- Joint torque, range-of-motion or glove-performance measurements.
- Maintenance requirements, service life or certification milestones.
These omissions mean the suit cannot responsibly be described as operational, flight-ready or proven for the Moon.

How Wangyu relates to Feitian
China has relevant orbital-EVA experience. Officials reported that first- and second-generation Feitian suits had supported 17 astronauts in 17 extravehicular activities by September 2024, as described at gov.cn. That is an important foundation, but Wangyu should not be treated as simply a modified Feitian.

Lunar EVA adds walking and falling recovery, abrasive dust, partial gravity, geological tools, ladders, rover seats, surface thermal cycles and potentially longer excursions away from a spacecraft. The engineering priorities overlap, but the operating problem is different.
China’s planned lunar-landing architecture
China says it aims to land astronauts on the Moon before 2030. That wording describes a program objective, not a confirmed launch date. The announced concept uses two launches:

- A Long March-10 rocket launches the Mengzhou crewed spacecraft.
- A second Long March-10 launches the Lanyue lunar lander.
- The spacecraft and lander rendezvous and dock in lunar orbit.
- Astronauts transfer into Lanyue and descend to the surface.
- The crew conducts surface work, including rover operations with Tansuo, before returning through the planned spacecraft architecture.
In a March 3, 2025 status report, Chinese authorities said Wangyu, Long March-10, Mengzhou, Lanyue and Tansuo were progressing through preliminary development, with large-scale tests of initial hardware still planned. The report is available at gov.cn.

NASA selected Axiom Space to develop the Axiom Extravehicular Mobility Unit (AxEMU) for planned Artemis lunar surface missions. NASA describes a commercial moonwalking-services model in which Axiom handles design, development, qualification, certification and production of training and flight suits. Its public description emphasizes mobility, lunar-hazard protection, life-support systems, pressure garments, avionics, space-like testing and fit for at least 90% of the U.S. male and female population. NASA’s program information is at nasa.gov; the prototype reveal is covered at nasa.gov.

What would demonstrate readiness
Meaningful validation would include vacuum and thermal-vacuum tests, dust-ingress testing, reduced-gravity or suspension trials, long-duration human-factors evaluations, glove-dexterity measurements, airlock or suit-port testing, integrated tests with Mengzhou, Lanyue and Tansuo, lunar-analog field exercises, and formal qualification and certification milestones. The September 2024 demonstration established terrestrial mobility and public presentation—not lunar operational readiness.
What the unveiling means
Wangyu is significant because it gives China’s lunar program an identifiable surface-EVA system alongside its rocket, spacecraft, lander and rover. It also shows how China is applying Feitian experience to a harder environment. But the evidence supports a narrower conclusion: China unveiled a developing lunar-suit design, while the suit’s detailed specifications, certification and the exact landing date remain unsettled.
