China Construction Bank (CCB) was larger and reported higher net profit than Bank of China (BOC) for 2025. BOC reported a lower non-performing loan ratio and a larger disclosed overseas contribution to group profit. Both reported a 30% full-year payout ratio. Those figures describe different strengths, but they do not show which stock is the better investment: that requires current share prices, share-class context and the banks’ latest interim results.

The comparison below uses each bank’s own reported 2025 figures, not independently harmonized data. Both had published 2026 interim reports by October 7, 2026, but the contents are not reflected here; the latest figures in this comparison are therefore for 2025.

How do CCB and BOC compare in size and earnings?

CCB reported group assets of RMB45.63 trillion at the end of 2025 and net profit of RMB339.79 billion for the year. BOC reported group assets above RMB38 trillion and net profit of RMB257.9 billion. On these company-reported measures, CCB was larger and more profitable in 2025. The banks’ figures come from their respective disclosures and have not been independently harmonized.

These totals are a starting point, not a forecast. A larger asset base or higher net profit does not by itself establish stronger future growth, more efficient operations, or a more attractive share price.

What do the reported credit-quality figures show?

BOC reported a non-performing loan (NPL) ratio of 1.23% at year-end 2025. CCB reported 1.31%, alongside a provision coverage ratio of 233.15%. The NPL ratio is a headline measure of loans classified as non-performing; provision coverage indicates the scale of provisions relative to reported NPLs.

BOC’s lower reported NPL ratio is a simple comparison, not proof that its overall credit risk is lower. Portfolio composition, collateral, recognition practices and coverage also matter. The figures alone do not settle how the banks would fare under different credit conditions.

How do profitability and capital compare?

CCB reported an average return on equity (ROE) of 10.04% for 2025, a capital adequacy ratio of 19.69% and a core Tier 1 capital adequacy ratio of 14.63%. These are CCB’s reported figures; the disclosures summarized here do not provide a matching BOC set for a like-for-like comparison.

ROE measures profit relative to shareholders’ equity, while capital ratios indicate regulatory capital relative to risk-weighted exposures. They answer different questions: ROE is a profitability measure, and capital ratios are part of assessing financial resilience. A comparison of one bank’s disclosed figures against the other’s missing figures would not be meaningful.

What do the dividend figures mean for investors?

Both banks reported a 30% full-year cash payout ratio for 2025. CCB reported a cash dividend of RMB3.887 per 10 shares; BOC reported RMB2.263 per 10 shares. The per-10-share amounts should not be read as a direct measure of which stock pays more: share class, market price, tax treatment and currency conventions affect what an investor receives and the yield implied by the price paid.

A payout ratio describes the share of earnings distributed under the reported measure; it is not a dividend yield, which relates the dividend to the current market price. To compare yields, investors need the relevant share class and exchange price, along with dividend and tax details. A 2025 payout ratio also does not guarantee a future dividend or payout.

How do their domestic and international businesses differ?

CCB’s reported business profile emphasizes its domestic lending base: it reported net loans of RMB26.93 trillion and highlighted housing, corporate, manufacturing and strategic-industry lending. BOC emphasizes its global banking footprint and foreign-exchange and cross-border services.

BOC said overseas commercial and comprehensive operating companies contributed 27.99% of group profit in 2025. CCB reported RMB21.488 billion in combined net profit from overseas commercial banking institutions and comprehensive operating subsidiaries, up 19.65%, and RMB6.50 trillion in cross-border settlements. These disclosures use different measures, so they show that both banks have meaningful international activity but do not support a direct ranking of overseas performance.

Business focus can help investors understand exposure, but it does not prove that one bank will grow faster or deliver better returns. Lending priorities and international services are strategic distinctions, not investment outcomes.

What else is needed to decide which stock is better value?

The 2025 results do not establish which bank’s shares are more attractively valued. An investor would need to compare current prices for the relevant share classes and exchanges with financial measures such as earnings, book value and dividends. The per-share cash figures cannot substitute for that analysis.

Investors should also review the 2026 interim statements before drawing conclusions about current momentum. CCB’s investor-relations page listed its 2026 half-year report on August 28, and BOC’s investor-relations page listed 2026 interim reports. The 2025 figures in this article do not capture any changes reported in those documents.

Both banks operate within China’s credit, interest-rate and regulatory environment, and both may be affected by policy priorities and state-directed capital allocation. The figures here do not establish the current direction or relative magnitude of those risks.
