China’s Institute of Plasma Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (ASIPP), says its toroidal-field superconducting magnet for the Comprehensive Research Facility for Fusion Technology (CRAFT) completed its final fabrication process and passed expert review in Hefei on June 27, 2026. The developers describe it as the world’s largest superconducting magnet for a fusion reactor. This is a major fusion-research component milestone—not a completed power plant or a step that means the facility is generating commercial electricity.
What was completed in China?
The milestone concerns CRAFT’s toroidal-field (TF) magnet, a large superconducting component built for fusion research. The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) reported that the magnet completed final fabrication and passed review. CAS and ASIPP characterize it as the world’s largest superconducting magnet for a fusion reactor, comparing its volume and stored energy with ITER’s TF magnet. CAS’s June 2026 report describes the record claim and comparison; a separate CAS technical report gives its specifications.

“Construction” in this context means fabrication and review of the magnet. The milestone does not establish that CRAFT itself is complete, that a fusion power plant has been built, or that electricity is being generated.
What does a toroidal-field magnet do?
The TF magnet produces the toroidal magnetic field—the field running around the doughnut-shaped plasma chamber. That field helps confine the extremely hot plasma and limit the impact of energetic particles, or associated energy loss, at the vacuum-chamber wall. It is one of the core components of fusion research infrastructure, but it does not generate power on its own. ASIPP and CAS describe its role in plasma confinement.

ASIPP reports a design aim of stable, reliable operation for 60 years under very low temperatures, high current, strong radiation and high stress. That is a stated design-life claim, not evidence that the magnet has already operated for that duration. The CAS technical report gives the magnet’s figures and operating-life claim.
How does it compare with ITER’s TF magnet?
According to the developers’ comparison reported by CAS, the CRAFT TF magnet’s volume is 1.3 times that of ITER’s TF magnet, and its energy-storage capacity is three times greater. Those comparisons apply to the TF magnet on the stated measures; they do not mean that CRAFT is larger than ITER as a whole or that the CRAFT component is a complete reactor. The CAS report is the source for both comparisons.

A separate CRAFT milestone: the central-solenoid coil
ASIPP also reports that a separate high-temperature superconducting central-solenoid (CS) coil completed final acceptance and full-parameter testing. The CS coil is not the TF magnet described above. ASIPP lists its stable current as 60 kA, stored energy as 6.03 MJ, and joint resistance as 0.87 nΩ. The institute also credits the six-year project with 47 authorized patents and 14 industry standards. These are project-reported figures from ASIPP’s report.
