Child Care Costs in 2026: What U.S. Families Pay and Where to Find Help

The latest national benchmark available in 2026 puts the average annual price of child care at $13,184—but that is a 2025 estimate, not a quote for every family. Actual costs depend on location, a child’s age, provider type and care schedule, while household income and family structure affect how heavy the bill feels. Here’s what the national figures do—and do not—tell you, and where to look for help paying.

What does child care cost in 2026?

The latest national market-price estimate available in 2026 is $13,184 a year for 2025, according to Child Care Aware® of America (CCAoA), whose report was published in May 2026. It is a national benchmark—not the amount every family pays or a current quote from a provider. CCAoA calculated the average using three methods and data from 47 states; Colorado, New Mexico, South Carolina and Washington, DC did not have comparable price data for that calculation because they use alternative methods to set subsidy rates. CCAoA’s 2025 Price & Supply report explains the estimate.

The figure covers prices for infants, toddlers and four-year-olds in licensed centers and family child care homes. It does not include school-age prices in the national calculation because those data vary too much across states. CCAoA gathered state information in early 2026, mostly for December 2025, and labels the resulting dataset “2025 data.” Its methodology also describes how earlier survey prices were adjusted for inflation where needed.

A national average can help show the scale of the expense, but it conceals state and provider differences. It is not a substitute for comparing local quotes for the same child age, schedule and year.

How much of a family’s income can care take?

The same annual price can impose very different burdens because household incomes differ. CCAoA compared child care prices with Census median family-income estimates. In its 2025 analysis, the estimated price equaled 10% of median income for married-couple households with children and 33% for single-parent households. These are comparisons to median incomes for those household types, not a claim that each household spends that exact share. The underlying income measure does not provide a separate estimate for unmarried couples raising children. CCAoA’s May 2026 summary discusses the household burden.

What families report paying: a different measure

The Federal Reserve’s 2025 household survey offers a complementary view of payments reported by families who paid for care. These figures describe particular respondent groups, not the annual market-price average above or every family with children.

Some unpaid care 44% Parents of children under 13; grandparents were a common source

The survey also found that one-fourth of adults living with their own children under 13 reported paid care in the prior week. The reported use of paid care varied by income, as shown above; the figures do not mean that the remaining families had no care needs. The Federal Reserve’s 2026 report on household economic well-being gives the survey’s measures and population definitions.

Did child care prices rise faster than inflation?

Not over the five-year period covered by CCAoA’s comparison: child care prices rose 23% from 2021 through 2025, while overall prices rose 24%. Those figures describe the cumulative change across that period, not the price change every family experienced or a forecast for 2026. CCAoA’s report provides the comparison.

What do supply figures say about finding care?

National provider counts moved in different directions from 2024 to 2025: licensed child care centers decreased by 1%, while family child care homes increased by 1.4%, according to CCAoA. Those national changes do not describe every state or neighborhood. Among states with complete data, 26 of 43 reported a center decline; only seven of 42 reported an increase in family child care homes. CCAoA’s supply data show both the national figures and the limits of state coverage.

Why can care be expensive for families and still fall short for providers?

A family’s bill is not necessarily the full cost of delivering care. In its June 2026 report, CCAoA compares market prices, subsidy rates and estimates of providers’ true costs. It reports that in most states with available data, subsidy rates are below both market prices and provider costs; market prices are also often below estimated true costs. CCAoA argues that the mismatch can limit provider participation in subsidy programs and narrow families’ choices. These are the organization’s findings and interpretation, not a claim that every state or provider has the same cost gap.

CCAoA’s policy recommendations include setting subsidy rates to cover true costs, expanding subsidy eligibility, stabilizing the child care workforce and using both market surveys and cost models to assess affordability and access. For families, the practical implication is that a price can be difficult to afford even where available care is limited; a listed rate alone does not explain the provider’s underlying costs or whether a subsidy will be accepted.

Where can families look for help paying?

Potential routes include state child care subsidies (also called vouchers or certificates), Head Start and Early Head Start, state-funded prekindergarten, employer benefits or provider arrangements, and the federal child and dependent care tax credit. Availability, eligibility and rules vary by program and location. ChildCare.gov lists these options in its financial assistance guide; check the relevant state agency and official tax guidance for current requirements rather than assuming you qualify or estimating a benefit from national figures.

  1. Contact your local Child Care Resource & Referral agency. Ask about licensed providers, local rates, openings and assistance programs. Find state and local starting points through ChildCare.gov’s financial assistance page.
  2. Check your state’s child care assistance agency. Ask about the application process, income rules, waiting lists, covered providers and whether a provider must participate in the program.
  3. Ask about public early-learning programs. Check local availability and eligibility for Head Start, Early Head Start and state-funded prekindergarten; age ranges and schedules may not match every family’s needs.
  4. Ask your employer about care-related benefits. Find out whether dependent-care benefits, a provider arrangement or a discount is available and what rules apply.
  5. Check official tax guidance before planning around a credit. Eligibility and the amount a family may claim depend on its circumstances and current rules; use federal guidance or a qualified tax professional for your situation.

How to compare child care quotes

A lower headline price is not necessarily a like-for-like option. Compare providers using the same assumptions and check how assistance or other costs change the amount your household would actually pay.

  • Child and schedule: Compare the same age group, hours of care, days per week and calendar year.
  • Provider type and location: Distinguish a licensed center from a family child care home, and compare providers in the same local market.
  • What the quote includes: Ask about registration charges, meals, late pickup fees, deposits, holidays and other charges, and whether quoted amounts are weekly, monthly or annual.
  • Availability and fit: Confirm openings, operating hours, schedule flexibility and whether the provider meets your family’s needs.
  • Licensing and quality: Check licensing status and the quality information available from your state or local resource agency.
  • Ways to lower your out-of-pocket cost: Ask whether the provider accepts subsidies, whether public prekindergarten or Head Start fits your child, and whether employer benefits or tax provisions may apply to your circumstances.

These comparisons help separate the provider’s quoted price from your eventual household payment. No single provider type is established as the cheapest everywhere; location, age, schedule, availability and assistance all matter.
