The “60 years ago” description is a rounded reference to two milestones: S. Truett Cathy perfected the Original Chick-fil-A Chicken Sandwich in 1964, then opened the first Chick-fil-A restaurant in 1967. By 2024, Chick-fil-A ranked third among U.S. restaurant chains by sales, according to Restaurant Business.
What the “60 years ago” claim gets right—and wrong
Measured from 2026, the sandwich milestone was 62 years ago and the first restaurant was 59 years ago. The shorter “60 years” phrasing blends those dates into a single origin story. The underlying bet was simple: build a restaurant around one distinctive chicken sandwich rather than offer a broad menu.

Cathy had already been operating restaurants for years. In 1946, he and his brother Ben opened The Dwarf Grill in Hapeville, Georgia. That experience supplied the operating discipline and customer focus that later shaped Chick-fil-A.

Why the chicken bet scaled
A narrow, memorable signature product
The Original Chicken Sandwich uses a boneless chicken breast, two pickles and a toasted buttery bun. Cathy’s testing of hundreds of recipes produced a product with a short ingredient description that customers could remember and order repeatedly. The company says it has continued using that recipe since 1964.

Product concentration also simplified the central promise: customers knew what the restaurant was built around. That did not eliminate the need for other menu items, but it gave the chain a recognizable anchor instead of asking each location to compete on an undifferentiated full menu.
Mall food courts lowered the initial footprint
The first Chick-fil-A was only 384 square feet inside Greenbriar Mall. A food-court setting supplied a steady flow of shoppers while allowing the concept to operate in a compact space. This was a different starting point from opening a large roadside restaurant with a drive-through, parking and a full standalone infrastructure.

The 1986 standalone opening marked the next phase. Chick-fil-A could preserve its product and service identity while using a format designed for dedicated restaurants rather than shared mall seating.
Local operators made hospitality part of the model
Chick-fil-A describes its structure as family-owned, with local Owner-Operators who are hands-on in their communities. The company’s stated service promise is “top-quality food, served with exceptional hospitality.” In practical terms, that model gives individual restaurants an operator responsible for local execution instead of treating every unit as a remote, interchangeable outlet.

Closing on Sundays created a durable operating rule
Cathy decided in 1946 to close on Sundays so employees could have a day for rest and worship. Chick-fil-A says the policy remains in place. The company’s official history page documents the decision and its continuation: Chick-fil-A history.
That policy means restaurants forgo one regular trading day every week. It is therefore both a cultural commitment and a structural constraint: sales comparisons must account for a six-day operating week rather than assume seven-day availability.

How large Chick-fil-A is
The chain’s scale figures come from two different reporting contexts and should not be treated as one single-period audited dataset. The Chick-fil-A UK media fact sheet, published in 2025, describes the referenced year as follows:

The sales currency in that fact sheet is pounds, even though it describes U.S. sales. It should not be silently converted into dollars or presented as a current 2026 total.

What “America’s third-largest restaurant chain” means
Restaurant Business reported in its discussion of 2024 results that Chick-fil-A remained the country’s third-largest restaurant chain by sales. The chain added $1.2 billion in sales during 2024. Restaurant Business also put a typical freestanding Chick-fil-A at about $9.3 million in 2024 sales, compared with $9.4 million in 2023.
Those figures establish a time-specific U.S. sales ranking, not a claim that Chick-fil-A has the third-most restaurants worldwide or the third-highest sales in every country. The ranking also does not erase the chain’s six-day schedule; a unit’s annual sales reflect the operating policy as well as customer demand.
The business lesson behind the growth
Chick-fil-A’s expansion combined four choices that reinforced one another:

- One clear product identity: the sandwich gave the brand an immediately understandable reason to visit.
- A compact launch format: the mall food court provided traffic without requiring a full standalone site from day one.
- A local operating relationship: Owner-Operators were expected to deliver hospitality and community presence.
- A consistent rule: Sunday closure made the company’s values visible while setting a fixed limit on trading days.
The result was not overnight scale. It was a progression from a 1946 restaurant, to a tested sandwich in 1964, to a 384-square-foot mall unit in 1967, and finally to standalone restaurants and a national footprint. The 2024 third-place ranking is the latest measured outcome of that long, tightly focused operating model.
