Chiaki4Deck vs PS Remote Play: Which Is Better for Streaming PS5 Games?

For Steam Deck owners, Chiaki4Deck (the project’s current chiaki-ng lineage) is usually the better way to stream PS5 games. It is built around Steam Deck controls, Game Mode use, HDR, and battery-conscious streaming. Sony’s PS Remote Play is the safer choice when you want a first-party app with an officially listed device ecosystem, including Windows, Mac, iOS, Android, Android TV, PS5, PS4, and PlayStation Portal.

There is no authoritative, controlled head-to-head latency test showing that one client is universally faster. Your router, Wi-Fi conditions, console connection, display, and distance from the PS5 usually matter more than the client name. The practical choice therefore depends on your device, HDR needs, controller features, and tolerance for community-maintained software.

Chiaki4Deck and PS Remote Play are solving the same problem differently

Both applications stream a game rendered by a PlayStation console to another screen. The PS5 does the game processing; the receiving device displays the video stream and sends your controller input back to the console.

What Chiaki4Deck is

Chiaki4Deck is an open-source Chiaki fork/client whose current development lineage is called chiaki-ng. Its documentation is specifically oriented toward Steam Deck use, including latency, battery use, controls, HDR, and operation in Steam Deck Game Mode. It can discover a PS5 on the same wireless network and can register the console through PSN for connections outside the home.

What PS Remote Play is

PS Remote Play is Sony Interactive Entertainment’s official application and service. Sony says it can stream PS4 and PS5 games, switch games, show the console home screen, and navigate console menus on a compatible device connected through broadband or mobile data. Sony lists Windows and Mac computers, iPhone and iPad, Android phones and tablets, Android TV devices, PS5 and PS4 consoles, and PlayStation Portal as supported platforms. SteamOS and Steam Deck are not included in that official compatibility list.

Outside-home connection PSN registration is supported; release 1.7.0 added remote PSN connection without port forwarding as a documented feature Designed as Sony’s supported remote-play service, subject to console, account, and network requirements
Support model Community-maintained open source; features can vary by release First-party Sony support and a defined compatibility list

Which is better on a Steam Deck?

Chiaki4Deck is the stronger fit on a Steam Deck because the project treats the Deck as a primary target rather than an unlisted workaround. Its documentation covers native controls, Game Mode use, streaming latency, battery considerations, and PS5 HDR. You can also use the Deck’s built-in controls without carrying a separate controller.

PS Remote Play remains useful if your main device is a Windows laptop, Mac, phone, tablet, Android TV device, another PlayStation, or PlayStation Portal. It is the option with an explicit first-party compatibility list and a Sony support path. On a Steam Deck, however, you would be outside that list, so installation and behavior are not covered in the same way as on Sony-supported platforms.

  1. On the PS5, open Settings → System → Remote Play.
  2. Turn on Enable Remote Play.
  3. If you want to wake the console from Rest Mode, open Settings → System → Power Saving → Features Available in Rest Mode.
  4. Enable Stay Connected to the Internet.
  5. Enable Enable Turning on PS5 from Network.
  6. Sign in with the PlayStation Network account you intend to use for remote play.

The Rest Mode options affect wake-up. They do not improve video quality or reduce network latency while a session is already running.

Setting up Chiaki4Deck on Steam Deck

Chiaki-ng can discover a console on the same wireless network. For an in-home session, connect the Deck and PS5 to the same network, launch the client, and select the discovered console. PSN registration enables remote connection through your account when the console is not on the same local network.

Local-network connection

  1. Enable Remote Play on the PS5 using the console path above.
  2. Connect the PS5 and Steam Deck to the same home network.
  3. Open Chiaki4Deck in the Deck environment where you installed it.
  4. Use the client’s console discovery list and select your PS5.
  5. Complete the account or registration step requested by the client, then start a test session while you are near the router.
  6. After confirming video and controls, add or launch the client from Steam Deck Game Mode if that is how you want to use it routinely.

The exact installation method and menu wording can change between chiaki-ng releases. Treat the project’s release documentation as authoritative for the build you install rather than assuming that an older guide’s package name or button is still current.

Using it away from home

Chiaki-ng release 1.7.0 added remote connection through PSN without port forwarding. That is a documented project feature, not a guarantee that every home router or carrier network will connect successfully. You still need Remote Play enabled, the PS5 signed in, Rest Mode network and wake settings configured if you want to wake it remotely, and a stable internet path at both ends.

Setting up Sony PS Remote Play

  1. Enable Remote Play on the PS5.
  2. Install the official PS Remote Play application for your supported device category.
  3. Sign in with the same PlayStation Network account used on the console.
  4. Follow the application’s console-selection and pairing prompts.
  5. Use a compatible controller supported by that device, or the input method Sony provides for the platform.

Sony’s service can use a broadband connection or mobile data. Its stated minimum is 5 Mbps, and Sony recommends at least 15 Mbps. Those figures describe connection throughput, not a promise of a particular frame rate, image quality, or input delay.

HDR: the biggest picture-quality difference

Chiaki-ng documents a specific PS5 HDR path. You need an HDR-capable client, such as a Steam Deck OLED, HDR enabled on the PS5, and the H265 HDR (PS5 only) codec selected in the client. When those conditions are met, the Deck can receive HDR output rather than only an SDR conversion.

What if your client is not HDR-capable?

A non-HDR display cannot show genuine HDR output. Chiaki-ng can use tonemapping so HDR game content is converted for an SDR client. Tonemapping can make the picture usable, but it is not the same as displaying the console’s HDR signal on an HDR panel.

What Sony’s documentation establishes

Sony documents broad Remote Play compatibility and warns that controller features vary by device, but its general Remote Play information does not promise HDR across every supported platform. If HDR is a deciding factor, Chiaki-ng’s explicit codec and HDR-client documentation is clearer for a Steam Deck OLED than Sony’s cross-platform description.

Controller support and PS5 features

Steam Deck controls

Chiaki4Deck maps the Steam Deck’s built-in controls for handheld play. This is the simplest arrangement when you want to pick up the Deck and play without pairing another gamepad.

DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers

Chiaki-ng documents DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers for supported configurations. Some DualSense features require the controller to be connected over USB or Bluetooth and require the relevant options to be enabled in the client. A wireless connection, operating-system behavior, and the particular release can affect which features are available.

If you want the fullest PS5 input experience on a larger screen, a DualSense controller is the most direct accessory choice. Do not assume that every haptic or trigger effect will pass through every client device: the project documents support with configuration caveats, while Sony states that controller feature availability varies by device.

Sony controller support

Sony lists DualSense, DualSense Edge, and DUALSHOCK 4 as compatible controllers for PS Remote Play, with feature availability varying by device. A controller being recognized does not mean that every advanced feature, such as haptics or adaptive triggers, is available on that particular phone, computer, or television.

Internet speed, router quality, and latency

Minimum throughput

Sony Interactive Entertainment’s 2026 requirement is at least 5 Mbps, with at least 15 Mbps recommended. Use the 15 Mbps recommendation as a floor for planning rather than as a guarantee of a smooth session. A connection can exceed that speed and still feel poor if it has interference, bufferbloat, packet loss, or unstable latency.

The best home-network arrangement

Chiaki-ng recommends connecting the PS5 to the router by Ethernet and using Wi-Fi on the Steam Deck. This removes one wireless hop from the console’s side while retaining handheld freedom. The same arrangement is sensible when diagnosing any Remote Play client: wire the console first, then evaluate the wireless link to the receiving device.

A modern Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 6E router can help when an older or congested wireless network is the bottleneck, but no particular router model is required. Position the Deck where it receives a strong signal, avoid crowded channels when your router permits channel selection, and pause large downloads or cloud backups during play.

Why there is no universal latency winner

No authoritative source establishes a controlled, reproducible latency comparison between current Chiaki4Deck/chiaki-ng and Sony PS Remote Play. Observed delay depends on the game, console connection, router queueing, Wi-Fi signal, internet route, display processing, and controller connection. A client that feels faster in one house can feel slower in another.

Games and features that do not work through Remote Play

Sony excludes games that require PlayStation VR or PS VR2, titles needing additional peripherals beyond the supported controllers, and games that must be streamed through a PlayStation Plus Premium cloud-streaming catalog. Remote Play streams a game running on your own PS5; it is not a way to turn a cloud-only title into a locally installed console game.

Both clients display the console interface as well as games, so you can switch games and browse menus. The practical limitations come from the game’s input and accessory requirements, not simply from whether the title is installed on the PS5.

Troubleshooting by symptom

The PS5 is not discovered on the Deck

  • Confirm both devices are on the same local network, not one on a guest network.
  • Check that Settings → System → Remote Play → Enable Remote Play is still on.
  • Restart the router, PS5, and client, then try discovery again.
  • If local discovery continues to fail, use the project’s PSN registration path instead of relying on network discovery.

The Deck connects but video stutters

  • Connect the PS5 to the router by Ethernet.
  • Move the Deck closer to the access point and test without other high-bandwidth traffic.
  • Check for Wi-Fi congestion or a weak signal before changing client codecs.
  • Use the recommended network arrangement—Ethernet on the PS5 and Wi-Fi on the Deck—before concluding that the client itself is at fault.

HDR is missing or the image looks wrong

  • Verify that the client display actually supports HDR; Steam Deck OLED is an example of an HDR-capable Deck.
  • Enable HDR on the PS5.
  • In Chiaki-ng, select H265 HDR (PS5 only).
  • Remember that an SDR client will use tonemapping rather than output HDR.

DualSense features do not appear

  • Check whether the controller is connected by USB or Bluetooth as required by the feature.
  • Review the client’s opt-in haptics and adaptive-trigger settings.
  • Test the same controller on the target device, because Sony notes that feature availability varies by device.

Remote connection fails away from home

  • Confirm the PS5 is signed in and Remote Play remains enabled.
  • For wake-up, verify both Rest Mode network options are enabled.
  • Update Chiaki-ng if you depend on the release 1.7.0-or-newer PSN remote-connection feature.
  • Test first from a different network with a stable connection; a carrier or router can still block or degrade a session even when port forwarding is not required.

A practical decision framework

  1. Start with the client device. On Steam Deck, prefer Chiaki4Deck. On Sony-listed platforms, PS Remote Play has the clearer support path.
  2. Decide whether HDR matters. For a Steam Deck OLED and PS5 HDR, Chiaki-ng has the explicit documented setup.
  3. Choose your controller priority. Built-in Deck controls favor Chiaki4Deck; broad first-party DualSense, DualSense Edge, and DUALSHOCK 4 listing favors Sony’s app on supported devices.
  4. Fix the network before judging latency. Wire the PS5, use a strong Wi-Fi connection for the client, and meet Sony’s 5 Mbps minimum—preferably 15 Mbps or more.
  5. Consider support risk. Chiaki-ng’s open-source model brings Steam Deck-focused features but release-dependent behavior. Sony’s app brings first-party support and a defined platform list.

For the specific question “Is Chiaki4Deck better than PS Remote Play on Steam Deck?”, the answer is yes for most Deck owners because it is designed for that hardware and documents HDR and handheld use. For devices Sony officially supports, or when first-party service support is the priority, PS Remote Play is the more defensible choice.
