Neither Chewy nor Petco is a proven universal price winner. The better value depends on your exact items, package sizes, shipping needs, discount eligibility, rewards usage and, for Chewy, whether a paid membership offsets its fee. Compare identical products at the same quantity, then calculate the delivered cost after discounts and rewards. Petco can be attractive for eligible Autoship orders and local store access; Chewy can be attractive for frequent shipments when Chewy+ benefits cover the annual fee.
What “better value” means in this comparison
Pet-supply prices change by brand, formula, package size, promotion and delivery location. A headline discount on one bag of food does not establish that an entire retailer is cheaper. The only reliable comparison is a matched basket: the same brand, formula, weight, count and product condition at both stores, checked close together in time.

When Petco offers the better value
Eligible first Autoship orders
Petco advertises up to 35% off select brands on a first Autoship order. The maximum discount is capped at $20, and eligibility rules limit which products and customers qualify. That means the advertised percentage is not a blanket reduction on an entire cart: a $100 eligible item could receive no more than the stated cap, while an excluded formula could receive no first-order discount at all.
Check the product page and checkout before assuming the promotion applies. Confirm that the item is marked as eligible, that you are starting a qualifying Autoship schedule and that the displayed discount has actually been applied. A one-time introductory saving should not be used to predict the cost of every later shipment.
Subsequent Autoship shipments
Petco says later eligible Autoship orders receive 5% off the current online selling price, subject to exclusions. Because the discount is tied to the current price, a sale price or a price increase can change the amount on each shipment. Petco also says schedules can be changed, skipped or cancelled. Its FAQ states, “Yes! You can cancel anytime,” while noting that an order already processed will still be processed and charged; cancel before the processing cutoff if you do not want that shipment.
Orders near the shipping threshold
Petco’s Autoship page says orders over $39 qualify for free shipping under its stated terms. If your recurring order reliably clears that threshold, Petco may avoid a fee without a paid membership. If your order is smaller, include the actual shipping charge in the unit-cost calculation rather than assuming the threshold applies.
Store access and immediate needs
Petco operates physical stores as well as an online shop. A nearby store can be useful when you need litter, food or a basic supply immediately, or when returning an item in person is more convenient. Store inventory, pickup availability and local pricing vary by ZIP code; the available evidence does not establish coverage for any particular reader, so check the selected store before relying on pickup.

When Chewy offers the better value
Frequent orders that use Chewy+
Chewy lists Chewy+ at $59 per year after a 30-day trial. The membership page states free shipping on every order with no minimum, plus rewards of 5% back on cat and dog food and health/pharmacy items and 2% on veterinary diets and other purchases, subject to terms. The page also says membership benefits can stack with item deals and Autoship savings, subject to those programs’ conditions.
Chewy+ is most likely to pay for itself when you place enough orders that avoided shipping charges and eligible rewards exceed the annual fee. It is not automatically worthwhile for an occasional buyer, a shopper whose orders already qualify for free shipping elsewhere or someone who will not redeem the rewards.

Use your own expected annual spending rather than a retailer’s example. Start with the $59 fee, subtract the shipping charges you would otherwise pay, then add only the rewards you expect to redeem. Keep reward rates separate by category because food and health items earn a different rate from veterinary diets and other purchases.
For illustration, suppose a shopper expects $800 of eligible cat and dog food purchases in a year. At the stated 5% rate, the rewards value would be $40 before considering shipping or exclusions. That shopper would still need at least $19 in avoided shipping or additional eligible rewards to cover the fee. This is a calculation example, not a prediction of any customer’s actual savings.
Stacking discounts carefully
A lower item price, an Autoship reduction and a membership reward are separate parts of the transaction. Record each separately so a reward that arrives later is not mistaken for an instant discount. Read the terms for excluded brands, veterinary diets, promotional items, reward expiration and any limits before treating the displayed percentage as cash-equivalent value.

How to compare a real basket without fooling yourself
- List exact products. Write down brand, recipe or formula, package weight, count, flavor and whether the item is a prescription or veterinary diet.
- Open both live product pages. Use the same date and, where possible, the same account status. Do not compare a sale price at one retailer with a regular price at the other.
- Normalize the quantity. Calculate cost per ounce, pound, dose or unit. A 30-pound bag and a 24-pound bag are not interchangeable simply because both are called “large.”
- Apply only discounts you qualify for. Check first-order status, Autoship eligibility, brand exclusions, maximum discounts and whether the promotion is one time or recurring.
- Build the cart to your destination. Enter your ZIP code and delivery address where required. Add shipping, handling or special fees before comparing totals.
- Account for rewards separately. Record the value and redemption conditions of points or cash-back credits. Do not subtract them as immediate cash unless the program allows that use at checkout.
- Check the arrival requirement. A slightly cheaper order that arrives after your pet runs out is not better value. Compare the stated delivery window with your household’s schedule.
- Save the result. Prices, stock and promotions change. Keep the date, product links and cart totals so you can tell whether a later change is a real saving.
Shipping, delivery and recurring-order controls
Petco
Petco’s stated Autoship shipping threshold can work well for a consolidated recurring order, but it may be less useful for small emergency purchases. Autoship schedules can be adjusted, skipped or cancelled. The practical risk is timing: cancelling after an order has entered processing does not stop that shipment, so review the next-order date in your account.
Chewy
Chewy+ is designed around predictable shipping costs, because its listed benefit removes a minimum-order requirement for members. The value depends on whether your account remains active after the trial and whether the membership’s terms fit your order pattern. Confirm the renewal date and current terms before the trial ends.
What neither retailer comparison proves
The available evidence does not quantify ZIP-specific delivery coverage, carrier performance or a controlled average delivery time for ordinary supplies at either retailer. Treat checkout estimates as location- and inventory-specific rather than as a permanent service guarantee.
Prescription and pharmacy value
Petco’s stated process
Petco identifies Vetsource as the fulfillment partner for online prescriptions and says veterinary authorization is required. For a new prescription, Petco estimates 2–4 business days for veterinary verification, followed by 1–2 business days of processing and typical delivery 5–7 days after approval. It summarizes that sequence as approximately 7–11 days from order. A refill already on file is estimated at about 3–7 days total.
Petco states free standard shipping for prescription orders of $35 or more. Refrigerated products may have different requirements or fees, and the pharmacy page says Petco does not operate a formal online price-match program for pharmacy orders. Chewy’s home page advertises pharmacy products and says licensed-pharmacist staff coordinate with a veterinarian. It also promotes a first Autoship offer for prescription medication. The reviewed page does not provide an equivalent current delivery estimate or enough matched prescription prices to identify a pharmacy price winner. How to compare medication costs
- Match strength, dosage form, quantity and manufacturer exactly.
- Include the cost of veterinary authorization, if any, and any special cold-chain or handling charge.
- Compare the refill schedule, not only the first prescription order.
- Allow time for verification when switching pharmacies; a lower displayed price is not useful if the medication arrives after the prescription runs out.
Rewards: points versus percentage back
Petco’s Perks structure, as described in its Autoship FAQ, awards points toward Petco Cash, including on Autoship purchases. The value depends on the program’s redemption rules and on whether you make another eligible purchase. Treat points as deferred value, not an immediate reduction in the order total.
Chewy+ publishes category-specific percentage rewards. Those rates are easier to model mathematically, but they still depend on eligible categories, account status and your ability to redeem the resulting rewards. Keep rewards out of a “cash price” comparison unless the terms make redemption immediate and unrestricted for the purchase you are evaluating.
An April 2026 retail monitor from Great American Group describes both retailers as part of a market where shoppers continue to buy pet supplies online and in stores. It also mentions insurance and wellness partnerships associated with each company, but it does not compare policy prices, coverage or retailer value. Assuming the maximum promotion applies to everything
“Up to” describes the best qualifying case, not the guaranteed discount for every shopper. Product, brand, account and dollar caps can all reduce the actual saving.
Counting rewards as cash too soon
Rewards may be issued later, limited to certain categories or unavailable until a future purchase. Record their conditions and realistic redemption value.
Ignoring the next recurring shipment
Autoship is convenient but can send food or medication before you need it. Check quantities, frequency, price changes and the processing cutoff whenever your pet’s consumption changes.
Using a temporary price as a permanent verdict
Retailer promotions, inventory and shipping terms change. A result from one cart on one date answers that cart’s question; it does not prove that one retailer is always cheaper.
