Chennai-based entrepreneur Sundara Rajan says he worked at L&T Construction project sites from 1986 to 1994, where he recalls 10–14-hour days and a six-and-a-half-day workweek. His account, reported by Hindustan Times on October 1, 2026, is a personal recollection—not verified evidence of a company-wide schedule.
What Sundara Rajan recalled about his L&T work
In a post quoted by Hindustan Times, Rajan described the workload this way: “Fun fact: I worked in L&T Construction, project sites work for 6.5 days a week and 10-14 Hrs a day. Project Manager would lead from the front. This was from 1986-94.”
He also recalled needing several hours’ permission during the workweek for ordinary personal errands: “I used to take 4 hrs permission on week days for personal work like banking, Sending Post, Calling Home, Haircut…”
Those details are Rajan’s account of his experience. The report does not independently verify the hours, identify specific sites, establish formal L&T rules from that period, or show how widely the schedule applied. The reported account is about project-site work between 1986 and 1994, not a description of L&T’s current working conditions.

Why the account prompted debate
As Hindustan Times reported, responses to Rajan’s post differed over whether such long hours reflected dedication or exploitation. Some commenters criticised the schedule; others framed demanding hours as part of construction work. These were positions voiced in the discussion, not findings that establish what was typical across the industry.
Rajan responded that there could be lean periods during project work, that digitalisation had brought some improvements, and that continuity of attention mattered to a project. He also said margins were “mostly single digit.” These are his comments in the thread; the report does not provide independent evidence for them as general facts about construction projects.

How the post relates to L&T’s later work-hours controversy
The report placed the discussion alongside controversy over L&T chairman S. N. Subrahmanyan’s remarks about wishing employees could work on Sundays and asking what they do at home. That context may help explain why Rajan’s recollection drew attention, but the two episodes concern different periods. Subrahmanyan’s comments do not establish the policy or conditions Rajan experienced decades earlier.

What the account establishes—and what it does not
- It establishes: Hindustan Times attributed the recollection to Rajan, described as a Chennai-based entrepreneur and former L&T Construction employee, and reported his stated dates, hours and weekday-permission example.
- It does not establish: that the account has been independently documented, that every project site followed the same schedule, or that Rajan’s experience represents construction work across India.
