No—the Chemistry Nobel has not demonstrably become the biology prize. Biology-facing research has been part of its history since at least 1907, and recent awards for genome editing and proteins have made that connection especially visible. But the prize also recognizes work in areas such as quantum dots and metal–organic frameworks, and there is no standardized count showing how many awards qualify as “biology.”
Why chemistry and biology overlap
The boundary is not sharp: living organisms are complex chemical systems, and biological research often depends on understanding molecules, reactions, and structures. The Nobel Prize’s historical account describes chemistry as bordering both physics and biology, rather than as a field sealed off from them. That overlap does not make every biology-facing award a biology award. A contribution can address a biological problem while being recognized for chemical mechanisms, molecular tools, or the design and structure of molecules.
Biology-facing Chemistry Nobels are not new
1907: cell-free fermentation
Eduard Buchner received the 1907 Chemistry Prize for biochemical research, including the discovery of cell-free fermentation. The early award is a reminder that work connected to living processes was recognized by the Chemistry Nobel long before today’s prominent genome and protein awards. The Nobel Prize’s historical essay traces other biology-linked topics in the prize’s history, including protein sequencing and structures, recombinant DNA, RNA catalysis, and DNA technologies.

The 2024 Nobel account frames proteins as chemical tools and focuses on designing and predicting their structures. Recent awards also show the prize’s range
Biology-linked awards are highly visible, but they are not the only subjects represented in recent years. The 2023 Chemistry Prize recognized the discovery and synthesis of quantum dots. In 2025, Susumu Kitagawa, Richard Robson, and Omar M. Yaghi were recognized for developing metal–organic frameworks. These awards show that the prize continues to encompass topics beyond biology; by themselves, they do not establish how the balance has changed over time. What the award totals can—and cannot—tell us
Nobel Prize Outreach counted 117 Chemistry Prizes awarded between 1901 and 2025, with 200 laureates representing 198 individuals; Frederick Sanger and Barry Sharpless each received the Chemistry Prize twice. These are totals for prizes and laureates, not a count of biology-related awards. The official material does not provide a consistent category or year-by-year tally for “biology” or interdisciplinary work.

How to read the next biology-facing Chemistry Nobel
When an award centers on life or living systems, look at the work the prize specifically recognizes: a chemical reaction, a molecular tool, or the design and structure of a molecule may explain why it belongs under chemistry. The Nobel’s own history and award explanations present this overlap as part of the discipline, not evidence that the prize has left chemistry behind.
