Chelsea has confirmed that the full-back returned to training at Cobham, but the club has not confirmed his selection or appearance in the match.
What is reported about the Portsmouth friendly?
On 3 October, RotoWire reported, citing Football London, that Palestra was expected to feature in the private friendly. The report said manager Xabi Alonso wanted to give him minutes after he trained with a select group of first-team players who were not away on international duty. That is secondary reporting, not an official Chelsea team announcement: the club’s cited updates do not confirm the fixture details or say Palestra would play.
The available information also does not establish whether the friendly took place, whether Palestra appeared, or how many minutes he might have played. The report framed the match as a possible step in his return, not a competitive Chelsea debut.
What Chelsea has confirmed about his fitness
Chelsea’s latest cited official update, published on 28 September, said Palestra was among the players back training at Cobham after a week off for those not on international duty. The club reiterated that he had not yet made his Chelsea debut after suffering a quad injury before the season opener. The update gave no new diagnosis, minutes limit or guaranteed return date. Chelsea’s 28 September training report names him among those back at work.

In a 11 September fitness update, Chelsea said the injury was a quad problem. Alonso said: “The injury is something on the quad,” and added: “He’s almost in the last stages of the recovery, so we will see. If not [fit for] Brentford, then Bournemouth for sure.” Those comments described an expectation at the time, not a confirmed return date. Chelsea’s fitness update carries the manager’s remarks.
Could he be available for Bournemouth?
The 3 October report said Palestra was aiming to be available for Chelsea’s 10 October match against Bournemouth. Availability is not the same as selection: neither that aim nor Alonso’s earlier comment confirms that Palestra will be fit or chosen for the match. The club would need to provide a later update or name him in the squad to establish that.

Why the friendly would matter
If Palestra does feature, it would offer a potential opportunity for minutes as he works back from injury. Chelsea’s official profile says he joined from Atalanta after a 2025/26 loan at Cagliari and impressed in preseason. It describes him as having played on the right before Alonso used him on the left against Milan; that history supports describing him as a versatile full-back, but does not establish what role he would have in a Portsmouth friendly. Chelsea’s preseason profile gives that positional context.
Palestra started Chelsea’s 3-1 preseason win over Real Sociedad on 15 August 2026. That was a preseason appearance, not a competitive match. Chelsea’s 28 September update and the 3 October report both described him as still awaiting his competitive debut. Chelsea’s Real Sociedad match report lists him in the starting XI.

What remains unconfirmed
- Whether Palestra was selected for or played in the Portsmouth friendly.
- Whether the friendly took place, and its lineup or result.
- Whether he would be available for the Bournemouth match on 10 October.
RotoWire’s 3 October item attributes the likely-involvement report to Football London; it is not confirmation from Chelsea. RotoWire’s Palestra update is the source for that report. Chelsea’s 17 September Brentford preview said Alonso was still assessing whether Palestra could make his debut and would decide after the final training session; that is historical context rather than a current availability update. Chelsea’s Brentford team-news update records what was known then.
