To host Chef’s Adventure, use the official “1.0.4 Chefs Adventure Server Files.zip” package for Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge, run it on a 64-bit Java 17 installation, accept the EULA on the first launch, and make sure every player uses the matching Chef’s Adventure 1.0.4.zip client profile. The server package is 483.0 MB. Once the local server starts and generates its world, configure firewall and router access if anyone will connect from outside your home network.

What you are installing

Chef’s Adventure is Haza’s CurseForge modpack for Minecraft 1.20.1 and the Forge mod loader. Its progression is built around more than 200 cooking-focused quests, Farmer’s Delight and add-ons, Alex’s Mobs and Alex’s Caves, Atmospheric, and Create 1.6 for building a cooking factory. The project listing recorded 34,767 total downloads in a 2025 snapshot.

This guide targets release V1.0.4, released with official server files on April 8, 2025. Do not combine the V1.0.4 server archive with another pack release, a different Minecraft version, or a different Forge profile. Modded Minecraft checks registry entries, loader versions, configurations, and data packs during login; a seemingly minor version difference can therefore prevent a connection.

Files and prerequisites

Download the two matching packages

Use Exact package What it contains or does
Server 1.0.4 Chefs Adventure Server Files.zip Official Forge server files for Minecraft 1.20.1; CurseForge lists the archive at 483.0 MB.
Client Chef’s Adventure 1.0.4.zip The profile every player installs in their launcher or modpack manager.

Download the server archive from the V1.0.4 release page rather than assembling individual mods. The official archive preserves the pack’s expected folders, configuration files, scripts, and Forge setup. Extract it into a new, dedicated directory whose only purpose is this server. Avoid extracting over an older world or renaming pack folders before the first launch.

Computer and operating-system preparation

  • Use a 64-bit operating system and a 64-bit Java 17 installation. Forge’s Minecraft 1.20.1 documentation specifies Java 17 and a 64-bit JVM.
  • Keep several gigabytes of free disk space beyond the 483.0 MB download. The world, player data, logs, backups, and generated chunks grow after the initial extraction.
  • Use a stable wired or strong wireless connection if the computer will also be the player host. A server can remain online without the game client being open, but the host computer must stay awake and connected.
  • Have administrator access for installing Java and creating firewall or router rules.

There is no authoritative Chef’s Adventure minimum-memory or maximum-player figure in the release information. Performance depends on player count, view distance, simulation distance, chunk generation, Create machinery, and the host’s processor as well as RAM.

Step 1: Extract the official server archive

  1. Create a directory such as ChefAdventure-Server-1.0.4 on a local SSD or another location that is backed up. Do not place the live world inside a temporary Downloads folder.
  2. Extract 1.0.4 Chefs Adventure Server Files.zip into that directory. Let the extraction preserve every folder and file supplied by the pack.
  3. Open the extracted directory and identify the included Forge server launch script or the command specified by the pack’s files. Use that supplied launcher instead of downloading a separate vanilla server jar.
  4. Keep the directory path simple and free of cloud-sync conflicts. If an antivirus program quarantines a Forge file, review its detection before restoring or allowing it.

The server archive is the source of truth for this release. Copying only the mods folder, omitting configuration files, or mixing files from a client installation can produce a server that starts but rejects players later.

Step 2: Install and verify 64-bit Java 17

Forge’s requirement is not merely “some Java.” A current Java release can be too new for a 1.20.1 Forge environment, while a 32-bit Java process cannot address the memory a large modpack needs. Install a 64-bit Java 17 runtime; a Java 17 development kit also satisfies Forge’s documented prerequisite.

  1. Install a 64-bit Java 17 distribution appropriate for your operating system.
  2. Open a new terminal or Command Prompt so the updated system path is loaded.
  3. Run java -version. Confirm that the major version is 17.
  4. On Windows, run where java; on macOS or Linux, run which java. Check that the path points to the Java 17 installation you intend the server to use.
  5. Launch the pack’s supplied server script. If the script calls a hard-coded Java path, update that path to the 64-bit Java 17 executable rather than changing your system installation at random.

An “unsupported class version,” an immediate Java error, or a process that uses an unexpected executable usually means the script is finding another Java installation first. Correct the path and verify the version again before changing Forge files.

Step 3: Perform the first Forge launch and accept the EULA

  1. Run the Forge server script or command from inside the extracted server directory. The first launch creates runtime files and may stop before opening the server console.
  2. When the process stops, open the generated eula.txt in a plain-text editor.
  3. Read the Minecraft EULA, then change the line eula=false to eula=true if you agree to it. Do not add quotation marks or spaces to the setting.
  4. Save the file and start the same Forge launcher again.
  5. Wait for the console to report that the server has finished loading before attempting a connection. The first run can take longer while the world and mod data are created.

If the server stops immediately on its first run, check eula.txt before reinstalling anything. A missing acceptance is the normal reason for this particular stop. Once the server has loaded, stop it from the console using the supplied stop command; do not close the window or kill the process while it is writing the world.

Step 4: Set memory conservatively

Change memory in the JVM argument file or startup script supplied with the pack. Do not edit a random launcher shortcut and assume the server is using those values. The exact syntax varies by the included script, so preserve its existing quoting and argument format.

A general CurseForge server guide suggests 6–8 GB as a starting range for heavy modpacks. That is generic guidance, not a Chef’s Adventure test result or a promise of a particular player capacity. Start at the low end that leaves enough RAM for the operating system and other services, then increase only when logs or operating-system monitoring show memory pressure.

Observation Interpretation Action
The server fails during startup with an out-of-memory message. The JVM cannot allocate the configured heap or the host has insufficient available RAM. Close other applications, confirm the machine is 64-bit, and either lower competing memory use or move the server to a machine with more physical RAM.
Frequent pauses occur while chunks load and the system is swapping. The operating system is paging because total memory demand is too high. Reduce view or simulation distance, lower other workloads, and raise the heap only if physical RAM remains available.
The console reports normal memory use but players experience lag. Lag may be CPU, disk, network, entity, or chunk-generation bound rather than heap bound. Check tick-time or server logs and reduce loaded-chunk work before blindly adding RAM.

Leave headroom for the operating system, backups, and any graphical desktop. Assigning nearly all installed RAM to Java can make the host less stable and does not guarantee faster ticks.

Step 5: Generate the world safely

  1. Start the server with the final memory arguments and let it remain online until the initial world has generated.
  2. Connect locally first, using the host’s local address, to verify that Forge finishes loading and the pack reaches the in-game menu.
  3. Stop the server from its console before editing configuration files, changing JVM arguments, or copying a backup.
  4. Make a complete backup of the server directory, including the world folders, mods, configuration files, scripts, and player data. A backup made while the process is writing region files can be incomplete.
  5. Restart and test again after each major configuration change. Keep dated backups so you can restore a known-good world if a mod or configuration change causes corruption.

Never overwrite the live world with a client-side save while the server is running. If you want to move an existing single-player world, stop the server first, make a backup, and follow the pack’s normal world-folder naming and data requirements.

Step 6: Let people outside your home network connect

Players on the same LAN can usually connect through the host computer’s local address once the server is listening. A friend on the internet needs a reachable route to the host. Mojang’s Java server guidance notes that outside connections may require network configuration, commonly including port 25565.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Confirm locally that the server is running and listening before changing the router.
  2. Allow the Java executable or the server process through the host operating system’s firewall for the network profile you use. If you create a port rule, use the server’s listening port and the correct protocol shown by your setup.
  3. Give the host computer a stable local address, such as a DHCP reservation, so a router rule does not point to a different device after a reboot.
  4. Forward the server port, normally 25565, from the router to that local address. The exact menu names vary by router.
  5. Give friends the host’s reachable public address and port, not the private address beginning with a local-network range.
  6. Test from a network that is not the host’s LAN. Some routers cannot test their own public address from inside the same network, so an external test or a friend’s connection is more meaningful.

Do not publish your public address in an open forum. If the server is behind carrier-grade NAT, a second router, or a restrictive network, ordinary port forwarding may not work; you may need a different network arrangement or a managed host.

Step 7: Install the matching client for every player

Each player should install Chef’s Adventure 1.0.4.zip in their launcher or modpack manager and select Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge as supplied by that profile. The client must match the server’s release, loader, and mod/configuration set. “Almost the same” is not enough when a mod changes registries or network packets.

  • Do not let one player use a newer or older Chef’s Adventure release because it has the same Minecraft version.
  • Do not remove a mod simply because that player does not plan to use its items; the server still expects the matching registry.
  • Do not add client or server mods casually. First reproduce the problem with an unmodified V1.0.4 profile.
  • Keep a copy of the known-good client profile so a launcher update does not silently change files.

A missing-mod message, registry mismatch, or login disconnect should be treated as a version-synchronization problem first. Compare the server archive and every player’s V1.0.4 profile before changing Java or networking.

What changed in V1.0.4: maps and minimap

The V1.0.4 changelog says that official server files were added, Waystones were added, JourneyMap was removed, and FTB Chunks became the map source. Players who expect JourneyMap’s interface will therefore not find it in this release.

To restore the available minimap, open the FTB Chunks map screen and use the M key to re-enable the minimap according to the changelog’s instruction. If the key does nothing, check that the game window has focus and that another key binding has not claimed M. Do not install JourneyMap merely to reproduce an older interface; it is not part of the V1.0.4 pack.

Troubleshoot in the order the symptom suggests

Symptom Likely cause Checks and fix
“Unsupported class version” or another Java launch error The script is using the wrong Java major version or a 32-bit executable. Run java -version and where java/which java; point the pack’s launcher to 64-bit Java 17.
The process stops immediately on the first run The EULA has not been accepted. Open eula.txt, set eula=true after reading the agreement, save, and restart.
The server starts but a player is rejected for a missing mod The client and server are not the same V1.0.4 files. Reinstall the official Chef’s Adventure 1.0.4 client profile and compare it with the 1.0.4 server archive. Remove unapproved additions or deletions.
Registry mismatch or a disconnect during login A mod, configuration, loader, or Minecraft version differs. Confirm Minecraft 1.20.1, Forge, and V1.0.4 on both sides; do not mix release folders.
Friends cannot connect, but the host can Firewall, router forwarding, address, or upstream NAT is blocking the path. Verify the server is listening, allow it through the firewall, forward port 25565 to the correct local address, and have the friend use the reachable address.
The expected JourneyMap screen is absent JourneyMap was removed in V1.0.4. Use FTB Chunks and enable its minimap from the map screen with M.
Server performance degrades as exploration continues New chunk generation, loaded chunks, entities, or host-resource limits are increasing work. Stop safely, back up, inspect logs and resource usage, and adjust view or simulation distance before changing mods.

Keep the full console log when asking for help. The first error in the log is generally more useful than the final “server stopped” line. Include the exact pack release, Minecraft version, Forge version shown by the profile, Java version, operating system, and whether the failure occurs at startup, local login, or remote login.

Self-hosting versus managed hosting

Running the server on your own computer gives you direct control over files, backups, JVM arguments, mod changes, and network policy. It also makes you responsible for Java, Forge startup, firewall rules, router forwarding, operating-system updates, crash recovery, and keeping the machine online.

A managed Minecraft host moves much of that administration into a control panel. WinterNode currently advertises one-click Chef’s Adventure hosting for Minecraft 1.20.1 with control-panel, file-manager, and SFTP access. Availability, included resources, and pricing can change, so confirm current support for the exact V1.0.4 pack before paying.

Decision factor Self-hosting Managed hosting
Initial setup Install Java, extract the archive, run Forge, accept the EULA, and configure networking. Usually a provider template or one-click installation, followed by account and server configuration.
File and backup control Complete control over local files and your backup schedule; you must perform and verify backups. Control depends on the plan and panel; confirm whether downloads, SFTP, and automated backups are included.
Network administration You manage firewall rules, port forwarding, public addressing, and uptime. The provider supplies the reachable endpoint; you still manage player access and pack files.
Recurring cost No hosting subscription, but you pay in hardware, electricity, bandwidth, and your time. A recurring fee buys allocated resources and operational infrastructure; prices and limits vary.
Support You diagnose Java, Forge, mod, and router problems yourself. Support may cover the panel and host, but not every custom mod or configuration issue.
JVM and mod changes Direct access to the startup script and JVM arguments. Possible when the plan exposes the required settings and file access; verify before choosing.

Choose self-hosting when you already have a reliable machine and want unrestricted control. Choose managed hosting when 24-hour availability, a simpler public endpoint, or avoiding router administration matters more than keeping the server on your own hardware.

Safe operating routine after setup

  • Stop the server from its console before copying worlds, changing JVM arguments, or editing major configurations.
  • Keep at least one recent backup away from the live server directory. Periodically test that a backup can actually be restored.
  • Record the exact release name, Minecraft 1.20.1, Forge profile, Java 17 path, memory arguments, and network port in a small administrator note.
  • Require every player to update together. Back up before replacing the server archive or changing pack files.
  • Watch free disk space and log growth. A world can continue generating data after the initial 483.0 MB extraction has been forgotten.
  • Use the FTB Chunks map in V1.0.4 rather than troubleshooting for a JourneyMap installation that the release no longer includes.

With the official V1.0.4 server archive, 64-bit Java 17, an accepted EULA, conservative JVM settings, and synchronized client files, the remaining work is ordinary server administration: generate the world, protect it with backups, and expose port 25565 only when outside-LAN players need access.
