Check Your Windows 11 Laptop Battery Health with These Built-In Tools

To check a Windows 11 laptop battery’s capacity, open Command Prompt, run powercfg /batteryreport, then compare the report’s Full charge capacity with its Design capacity. Windows saves an HTML report and prints its location. The ratio gives a useful estimate of remaining capacity; it is not the same as the battery percentage shown in the taskbar.

Run the Windows battery report

  1. Open Start, type Command Prompt, and open it.
  2. Enter powercfg /batteryreport and press Enter.
  3. Read the file location printed in the Command Prompt window. Open that HTML file in a browser.

Microsoft describes this command and report in its Windows battery-care guidance. The report is generated on the PC; no separate battery tester is required.

Find the capacity estimate

In the report, locate Installed battery and compare these two figures:

  • Design capacity: the battery’s designed capacity when new.
  • Full charge capacity: the battery’s current estimated maximum charge.

Estimate remaining capacity as: Full charge capacity ÷ Design capacity × 100. For example, if the report showed a full-charge capacity of 40,000 mWh and a design capacity of 50,000 mWh, the estimate would be 80%. That is a calculation example, not a diagnosis or replacement threshold.

Microsoft gives this comparison method for Surface devices in its Surface battery-capacity guidance. On other laptop brands, the report’s figures are useful indicators, but consult the manufacturer for model-specific interpretation and replacement advice.

The Recent usage and Battery usage sections show how the battery has been used and charged over time. They can help put capacity figures in context, but do not substitute for the capacity comparison when you want to estimate wear.

Use PC Health Check or a manufacturer tool

Microsoft’s PC Health Check app is another option. Its battery-capacity view compares battery performance with original capacity for devices with one or two batteries. Microsoft says this information is available for devices older than three years, so the view may not appear on a newer PC. See Microsoft’s PC Health Check guidance.

Some manufacturers also provide diagnostics or battery-management tools that interpret readings for a particular laptop family. These can add model-specific repair guidance that a general Windows report may not provide. For Surface devices, Microsoft names Surface Repair Tool for supported newer models, and Surface Diagnostic Toolkit when the newer tool does not support the model.

Interpret the result before deciding on replacement

A lower capacity estimate indicates wear, not an exact runtime

The ratio estimates capacity relative to the battery’s design figure; it does not promise a particular number of hours. Actual runtime also depends on workload, settings, and other factors. Use the laptop maker’s guidance to assess whether a measured capacity warrants service for your exact model.

A charge limit is not proof of battery damage

Smart charging may intentionally keep a plugged-in battery below 100% to help reduce wear. Microsoft says the feature is implemented differently by device manufacturers; Windows may display a heart indicator and the words “Fully Smart charged.” A capped charge alone does not show that the battery is worn out. See Microsoft’s explanation of smart charging and battery care.

Keep the Surface threshold in its proper scope

Microsoft says a Surface battery below 70% of its designed capacity may be replaced if the owner wants more capacity. This is optional Surface guidance, not a universal Windows or industry-wide replacement rule. Service choices can depend on device, location, warranty, and coverage.

Care for the battery and handle damage safely

  • Microsoft recommends keeping a lithium-ion battery around 20%–80% charge when practical to help slow degradation. Avoid frequent deep discharges where possible; these practices can help limit future wear but cannot restore capacity already lost.
  • If supported Smart charging is enabled, leave it on when you do not need a full charge soon.
  • For long-term storage, Microsoft recommends roughly 40%–60% charge in a cool, dry place, with periodic checks to prevent deep discharge.
  • If the battery visibly expands beyond the device enclosure, stop using the device immediately. Handle it carefully; do not press on or puncture the battery.

These care recommendations are from Microsoft’s Windows battery-care page. Microsoft’s accessed support guidance does not state a publication or revision year for these figures.

If replacement may be needed

Identify the laptop’s exact model before looking for a replacement battery or repair service. Follow the manufacturer’s or an authorized repair provider’s guidance; compatible parts and service availability vary by device, location, warranty, and coverage. The Windows report helps assess capacity, but it does not identify a compatible replacement part.
