To tell whether your Wi-Fi is strong, check the signal where you actually use your device—not just beside the router. The Wi-Fi bars are a quick clue; a router’s client details or a Wi-Fi analyzer can show a more precise reading called RSSI, measured in dBm. RSSI values are usually negative, and the closer the number is to zero, the stronger the received signal: -55 dBm is stronger than -70 dBm. Treat common dBm ranges as guidance rather than universal pass-or-fail limits, and consider reliability and speed alongside signal.

How to check Wi-Fi signal strength

Start with the Wi-Fi indicator

Look at the Wi-Fi icon on your phone or computer while standing in the room where the connection is normally used. Bars are convenient, but their meaning is not standardized across devices, so use them as a quick comparison rather than a precise measurement.

Get an RSSI reading

For a numeric reading, check your router or access point’s connected-client details, or use a Wi-Fi analyzer app. Depending on the product, the router interface or companion app may expose RSSI. Microsoft recommends analyzer apps for checking signal around the home; NHS England Digital identifies professional survey tools as an option for accurate RSSI measurement.

RSSI is measured in dBm and commonly appears as a negative number. A less-negative value means a stronger received signal. It describes signal level, not internet speed.

Compare the places you use Wi-Fi

Take readings in several rooms, especially where you notice trouble. Record the readings and run the same speed or reliability check in each place. Repeat after changing the router’s position or moving the device so you can see whether coverage improved. Microsoft Support recommends recording results in different parts of the home before and after changes.

What counts as a strong Wi-Fi signal?

There is no single cutoff that applies to every device, band, router, or activity. The following figures are examples from vendor guidance, not a universal grading standard.

RSSI reading How the cited guidance describes it Context
Above -60 dBm Excellent Ubiquiti WiFi Troubleshooting Guide
-60 to -70 dBm Acceptable in Ubiquiti’s guide; TP-Link labels -61 to -70 dBm fair Descriptions vary by vendor
-71 to -80 dBm TP-Link labels this poor; Ubiquiti says clients should begin roaming around -70 to -75 dBm Different vendor guidance and use contexts
Below -80 dBm Ubiquiti says instability is likely; TP-Link labels -81 dBm or lower very weak Vendor guidance, not a guarantee of a specific outcome

Ubiquiti’s separate connectivity guidance says -70 dBm or better is required for stable connections in its cited context. These thresholds can help orient you, but your own readings across rooms and the connection’s behavior matter more than treating one number as a definitive verdict. What to do if the signal is weak

  1. Compare with a nearby reading. Check RSSI near the router and again in the problem area. If it improves substantially nearby, local coverage or obstacles may be contributing to the problem.
  2. Improve placement. If practical, put the router or access point in a central, open, higher location and reduce obstacles between it and the devices. Retest in the rooms where you use Wi-Fi. Microsoft and TP-Link both recommend considering placement when troubleshooting coverage.
  3. Check mesh backhaul. If you use a mesh system, check the wireless signal between the router and the mesh access point. A weak link between nodes can limit the connection; adjust node placement and retest.
  4. Consider added coverage only if needed. If one area remains weak and you cannot conveniently move the router or device, an extender may help extend coverage. In a mesh setup, first check node placement and the backhaul link.
  5. Look beyond signal if performance remains poor. Strong RSSI does not rule out channel congestion, interference, device problems, or an issue with the internet connection. TP-Link recommends checking channel congestion and testing a wired connection when troubleshooting persistent instability.

Why a strong reading may not mean a good connection

Signal strength is only one part of Wi-Fi quality. NHS England Digital cautions that a single metric cannot determine overall performance or definitively identify every user problem. Congestion, interference, device behavior, and the upstream internet connection can all affect what you experience. Microsoft Support puts the practical point plainly: “A stronger signal gives you a better chance of a reliable Wi-Fi connection.”

Use RSSI to identify where reception is weaker, then compare it with the speed and reliability you actually get there. A reading is most useful as a location-by-location clue and as a before-and-after check—not as a promise of a particular speed.
