Short answer: the lowest published entry prices in this comparison are DigitalOcean Droplets at $4 per month and Amazon Lightsail at $5 per month. Those prices buy different bundles, however, and neither is automatically the cheapest for every workload. This guide treats “cloud hosting” as an affordable, self-managed cloud VPS or virtual server, not a fully managed website plan. There are no independent benchmark logs behind the “tried and tested” wording of the original title, so the figures below are provider-published prices checked in 2026 rather than test rankings.
What cheap cloud hosting means here
A cloud VPS gives you a virtual machine with allocated processor, memory, storage and network transfer. You normally choose an operating-system image, connect over SSH or a web console, install your software and maintain the server yourself. DigitalOcean describes Droplets as VPS/IaaS: customers manage the operating system, applications and data themselves (DigitalOcean Droplets). Amazon Lightsail instead emphasizes fixed bundles of memory, vCPUs and SSD storage for a monthly price (AWS Lightsail pricing).

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
That distinction is more important than a one-dollar difference in the headline price. A self-managed VPS can be inexpensive but requires patching, firewall configuration, backups, monitoring and incident response. A more managed service costs more or limits what you can configure, but reduces routine administration. The figures in this article cover the virtual-server plans documented in the supplied sources; backup, snapshot, extra storage, load-balancer, IP and traffic charges must be checked separately for your workload.
Entry plans at a glance
| Provider and plan | Published starting price | vCPU | Memory | Storage | Included outbound transfer | What the source establishes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| DigitalOcean Droplet | $4/month | 1 | 512 MiB | 10 GiB SSD | 500 GiB/month starting allowance | Self-managed VPS/IaaS; customer operates the OS, applications and data |
| Amazon Lightsail Linux/Unix general purpose | $5/month | 2 | 0.5 GB | 20 GB SSD | 1 TB | Fixed bundle; AWS lists static IP, DNS management, console access, SSD storage and monitoring among plan features |
DigitalOcean’s official Droplet page lists the $4 configuration as 512 MiB memory, one vCPU, 10 GiB SSD and 500 GiB transfer. Its pricing page states that public outbound-transfer overage is $0.01 per GiB (DigitalOcean pricing). AWS lists the $5 Linux/Unix Lightsail bundle with 0.5 GB memory, two vCPUs, 20 GB SSD and 1 TB transfer on its pricing page. These are entry configurations, not performance guarantees.

Why the cheapest-looking plan may not be cheapest
Transfer can dominate a small server bill
Estimate monthly outbound traffic before choosing a plan. DigitalOcean’s documented starting allowance is 500 GiB and its stated public-egress overage is $0.01/GiB. At 600 GiB, the extra 100 GiB would be $1 under that stated rate; at 2,000 GiB, the extra 1,500 GiB would be $15. That arithmetic applies only to the published public-egress rate and allowance, not to every type of traffic or product. Confirm how a provider counts traffic for your region and services.
Lightsail’s entry bundle lists 1 TB of transfer, so a media-heavy or download-heavy site could fit more comfortably at its base price than on a 500-GiB allowance. Conversely, a lightly used API may never approach either limit, making memory, CPU and administration the deciding factors.
Base price excludes workload extras
Build a monthly total that includes the items you will actually use:
- the virtual-server instance;
- automated backups or snapshots;
- additional block or SSD storage;
- reserved or extra public IP addresses, where charged;
- load balancing, managed databases, object storage and monitoring;
- outbound-transfer overage;
- taxes and currency-conversion fees.
The supplied pricing pages do not establish a universal price for all of these extras. Do not treat an entry number as an all-in bill until the provider’s current calculator or invoice documentation confirms each component.
DigitalOcean Droplets: the $4 self-managed baseline
DigitalOcean lists Droplets from $4 per month with 512 MiB memory, one vCPU, 10 GiB SSD and 500 GiB transfer (official Droplets page). The company’s pricing page lists public outbound-transfer overage at $0.01/GiB and describes the included allowance as starting at 500 GiB per month (official pricing page).
Where that entry tier fits
512 MiB is a very small memory budget. It can suit a low-traffic static site, a lightweight reverse proxy, a small development service or a learning server when the software stack is carefully chosen. It leaves little room for a database, search index, control panel and several background workers running together. Check actual memory use after installation; an operating system, web server and application can consume most of the allowance before visitors arrive.

Administration you must plan for
Because a Droplet is IaaS, you are responsible for selecting a supported image, applying security updates, creating non-root accounts, configuring SSH keys, enabling a firewall, managing application secrets, scheduling backups and restoring them when needed. The low monthly price does not transfer those tasks to the provider. If you do not want that operating responsibility, compare a managed platform’s service fee rather than comparing only VPS rental prices.
Amazon Lightsail: a larger fixed entry bundle
AWS lists a Linux/Unix general-purpose Lightsail plan at $5 per month with 0.5 GB memory, two vCPUs, 20 GB SSD and 1 TB transfer (Amazon Lightsail Pricing). AWS also lists static IP, DNS management, console access, SSD storage and monitoring among the service features. The bundle therefore provides twice the documented vCPU count, twice the SSD capacity and twice the listed memory of the $4 Droplet while costing one dollar more; CPU architecture, sustained performance, storage performance and regional availability are not established by these figures.
When the bundle is attractive
The larger transfer allowance is useful for a small public site, API or download service with predictable traffic. The bundled console and DNS features can simplify first deployment for someone who prefers an integrated AWS interface. You still need to maintain the guest operating system and application unless you select a separate managed product.
Free-tier caution
AWS advertises Lightsail access through Free Tier credits (AWS Free Lightsail). Treat credits as a time-limited offer with eligibility and usage conditions, not as a permanent $0 plan. Read the current offer terms, check the account’s eligibility and set billing alerts before launching resources. A credit can expire while a running instance continues to incur charges.

DigitalOcean’s 2026 article comparing AWS alternatives lists example entry prices for several providers: DigitalOcean $4/month, Vultr $5, Hetzner $4.09, Linode/Akamai $5, Google Cloud $6.11 and Azure $6.13 (DigitalOcean’s comparison article). These numbers are a vendor-published comparison with different plan assumptions, regions, billing models and resource bundles. They are useful as leads for checking live price pages, not as an independent “cheapest provider” ranking. Compare each named provider’s current memory, vCPU, disk, transfer and overage terms before selecting one.
The same article should not be used as evidence of comparative latency, uptime, support quality or benchmark performance. No market-wide independent statistic in the available material establishes one provider as the cheapest overall.

Choose a plan by workload, not by sticker price
1. Define the application
Write down whether the server will host a static site, CMS, API, game service, database, automation worker, VPN, staging environment or several applications. List required services such as a database, cache, queue, search engine and control panel. A plan that is adequate for one static site may be unusable for a database plus background workers.
2. Set a resource floor
- Memory: reserve headroom for the operating system, web server, application and bursts. A 512-MiB or 0.5-GB entry tier is a constrained starting point, not a comfortable universal size.
- CPU: count vCPUs and identify whether work is bursty or sustained. Two listed vCPUs do not by themselves prove faster execution than one vCPU from another provider.
- Storage: include the operating system, logs, databases, uploads and temporary files. Ten or 20 GB can fill quickly when logs and backups remain on the instance.
- Transfer: estimate outbound bytes, not only page views. Images, video, software downloads and API responses can dominate traffic.
3. Select a nearby region
Choose a region close to most users and to any dependent services, while meeting legal or organizational location requirements. The supplied material does not contain latency or reliability measurements, so do not assume that one provider or region wins those categories without separate evidence.
4. Price the complete configuration
Use the provider’s current calculator to add backups, snapshots, extra disks, public IPs, managed databases, load balancing and transfer overage. Record whether the amount is recurring, promotional, hourly, monthly, regional or tax-exclusive. Keep a copy of the pricing terms used for your decision because plans and allowances can change.
5. Decide who operates the server
If you can patch Linux, harden SSH, rotate credentials, monitor disk and memory, test restores and troubleshoot application failures, a self-managed VPS can be appropriate. If those tasks would be a business risk, budget for managed hosting or a managed application platform. A managed option should be compared on labor saved and support scope, not just on compute price.
Deployment checklist for a self-managed VPS
- Create the account and select the region: verify billing identity, choose a region near users and select the smallest tier that meets your documented resource floor.
- Choose an operating-system image: use a currently supported release and record its end-of-support date. Avoid installing a release that will require an urgent migration.
- Install access credentials: add an SSH key, create a non-root administrative user and disable password login after confirming key access. Keep an encrypted recovery path.
- Patch before publishing: update the operating system and packages, remove unused services and configure a host firewall that permits only required ports.
- Deploy the application: store secrets outside source control, run services with least privilege and set explicit resource limits where your runtime supports them.
- Configure DNS and TLS: point the domain to the server’s address, issue a certificate and automate renewal. Confirm both IPv4 and IPv6 behavior if you publish both.
- Enable backups: schedule provider snapshots or application-level backups, keep a copy outside the instance and perform a test restore before relying on it.
- Monitor and alert: watch memory, CPU, disk, inode usage, transfer, failed logins and certificate expiry. Set a billing alert for unexpected spend.
- Document recovery: record the image, packages, environment variables, DNS records, backup location and rebuild steps so another administrator can restore service.
Common failure modes and fixes
The server runs out of memory
Symptoms include slow requests, killed processes, failed package installs and database crashes. Check memory and swap usage, identify the largest processes, reduce worker counts, remove unused services and rotate oversized logs. If the workload still needs more headroom, resize to a larger memory tier rather than repeatedly restarting the instance.

Inspect egress by service and destination, then look for large assets, backup copies, update mirrors or an unexpectedly busy API. Compress responses, cache static content where appropriate and move infrequently accessed files to a storage service if its total cost is lower. Recalculate using the provider’s documented allowance and overage rate; do not assume all traffic is counted identically.

Review the account’s offer end date and current resources, then stop or delete anything no longer needed. Export data and snapshots before deletion. Convert the ongoing configuration to a paid-cost estimate using current terms rather than assuming the promotional rate continues.
You cannot maintain the operating system
Do not expose an unpatched server to the internet while deciding. Restrict access, apply updates and evaluate a managed service or an administrator who can own patching, backups and incident response. The cheapest compute plan is not economical if downtime or a security incident costs more than the saved monthly fee.

| Your priority | What to compare first | Likely implication |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest documented entry price | Base instance price and minimum resource bundle | DigitalOcean lists $4/month; verify that 512 MiB, one vCPU and 10 GiB meet the workload |
| More transfer at the entry tier | Included outbound GiB and overage rules | Lightsail lists 1 TB; confirm how your traffic is counted |
| Simple fixed billing | Bundle contents, hourly/monthly billing and add-on rates | Lightsail’s fixed bundle can be easier to model, but extras still need pricing |
| Maximum operating control | Image choices, networking and administrative access | A self-managed VPS offers control but leaves OS, application and data operations to you |
| Less server administration | Managed service scope and support cost | Compare the labor and support included, not only the virtual-machine price |
Bottom line for 2026 buyers
Start with the complete bundle rather than the largest “from” number in a search result. DigitalOcean’s documented $4 Droplet is the lowest listed entry price here, but it provides only 512 MiB memory, one vCPU, 10 GiB SSD and 500 GiB starting transfer. AWS Lightsail’s $5 Linux/Unix bundle lists 0.5 GB memory, two vCPUs, 20 GB SSD and 1 TB transfer, which may better suit a small public workload with higher outbound traffic. Neither figure proves superior performance, reliability or total cost for every region.
Before launching, write down your resource floor, traffic estimate, region, backup plan and administrative owner; price every extra and verify current terms. That process produces a defensible cheap-cloud choice without pretending that vendor-published entry prices are independent tests.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I move from a tiny VPS to a larger plan later?
Usually, providers offer a resize or migration path, but the exact procedure, downtime and storage limits depend on the service and plan. Keep tested backups and document the rebuild process before resizing.
Is a cloud VPS suitable for a production database?
It can be, if the selected tier has sufficient memory and storage performance and you operate backups, monitoring, patching and restore tests. The 512-MiB entry configuration is unlikely to provide comfortable headroom for a typical production database.
