There is no single privacy winner. ChatGPT offers the clearest separation between model improvement, chat history, and Temporary Chat. Gemini provides detailed activity deletion and auto-delete controls, but Google still retains some chats for service and safety processing, and reviewer-handled data can remain for up to three years. Meta’s Incognito Chat is designed to be unsaved and inaccessible to Meta, but the feature was announced for a rollout over coming months and applies only to that mode. Your best choice depends on whether you prioritize training opt-out, disappearing history, human-review limits, advertising personalization, or availability in your account and region.

These are different outcomes. “Not used to train,” “not in history,” “not retained,” “not reviewed,” and “not used for ads” are not interchangeable promises.
What “private” means in an AI chatbot
Before choosing a service, separate six questions that are often collapsed into one privacy score:

- History: whether the conversation appears in your account’s chat list or activity page.
- Retention: how long copies may remain in operational, safety, backup, or reviewer systems.
- Human review: whether people can inspect conversations for quality, abuse prevention, or safety work.
- Personalization and advertising: whether conversations influence memories, recommendations, or ads.
- Connected services: whether plugins, Google apps, Meta account links, or other third parties receive or process the information.
A setting that solves one problem may leave another untouched. For example, disabling ChatGPT model improvement stops new conversations from being used to train OpenAI models, but it does not remove saved chats. Gemini’s Keep Activity switch can stop future model-improvement use under stated conditions, while Google still processes the conversation to answer you and protect its services.
ChatGPT privacy controls: the most clearly separated choices
Turn off model improvement while keeping ordinary chat history
On a personal ChatGPT account, open Settings → Data controls and switch off Improve the model for everyone. OpenAI says new conversations are then not used to train its models. They can still appear in your normal chat history, so this setting is an opt-out from model improvement, not a deletion or “do not save” switch. The control is documented in OpenAI’s Data controls in ChatGPT.
If you want an existing saved conversation removed, delete it from the chat list separately. Turning off model improvement does not retroactively erase chats already stored in your account.

Start a Temporary Chat when you do not want the conversation in your history. OpenAI describes Temporary Chat as not appearing in history, not creating or updating memories, and not being used to improve models while it is temporary. OpenAI may retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety purposes.
Temporary Chat is not automatically a blank slate for personalization. Depending on your settings, a personalized Temporary Chat may use existing memories, custom instructions, and plugins. Check the temporary-chat personalization choice before entering sensitive information. Memory and model-improvement controls are separate; changing one does not silently change the other. The distinctions are covered in OpenAI’s data-control guidance and OpenAI’s Privacy Center in ChatGPT.
Use the right account boundary for work information
OpenAI says content from ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare workspaces is not used to train models by default. Workspace owners can set retention, access, and feature availability. Personal-account instructions should not be assumed to override an organization’s rules: confirm which workspace you are using and ask an administrator how retention and access are configured.

ChatGPT’s practical strengths and limits
- Strength: the model-improvement switch and Temporary Chat are visibly separate, so you can choose “keep history but do not train” or “do not keep ordinary history.”
- Limit: Temporary Chat can still be retained for up to 30 days for safety and may use existing personalization unless you disable it.
- Limit: deleting a chat and stopping future training are separate actions.
- Work-account caveat: administrator retention and access policies can supersede what a personal-account user expects.
Gemini privacy controls: activity management with important exceptions
Review, delete, or auto-delete Gemini activity
Open Gemini Apps Activity to review and delete activity or configure automatic deletion. Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub lists retention choices of three months, 18 months (the stated default), 36 months, or indefinite retention. Deleting Gemini activity does not delete information held by other Google services and does not remove data retained because human reviewers handled it. With Keep Activity off, Google says future chats are not used to improve Google AI models unless you submit feedback. Google still uses the conversation to respond and to protect Google, users, and the public. If you send feedback, it can include recent chat context plus uploaded or connected-app content, so do not treat the feedback button as a private channel.
Gemini’s control is therefore conditional: Keep Activity off plus no feedback limits model-improvement use, but it does not stop all processing.
Use Temporary Chat for a short-lived conversation
Temporary Chats do not appear in recent chats or Gemini Apps Activity, are not used for personalization or model training, and are retained for up to 72 hours to answer requests and process feedback. Google says even Temporary Chat and Keep Activity-off conversations may be handled by human reviewers for service and safety. Chats reviewed by human reviewers, and related data, can be retained for up to three years and are not deleted when you remove activity.
Check Google settings and connected apps separately
Gemini settings do not change other Google controls such as Web & App Activity or Location History. Connected Google apps and third-party services follow their own privacy policies. Gemini’s controls also do not govern processing used to create anonymized data for improving Google services.
Audio, video, and screen-sharing improvement has a separate control; Google’s announcement says that control is off by default. If you use those features, inspect that setting instead of assuming the text-chat choice covers it. Gemini’s practical strengths and limits
- Strength: activity review, deletion, auto-delete periods, Keep Activity, and Temporary Chat give you several ways to limit routine account history.
- Limit: a 72-hour temporary window is not instant deletion, and reviewer-retained data can last up to three years.
- Limit: turning off Keep Activity does not stop response, safety, connected-service, or other Google processing.
- Limit: deleting Gemini activity does not delete data in other Google products.
Meta AI privacy controls: Incognito Chat versus ordinary AI interactions
What Meta says Incognito Chat does
In a May 13, 2026 announcement, Meta introduced Incognito Chat for WhatsApp and the Meta AI app. Meta describes messages as processed in a secure environment it cannot access, conversations as not saved, and messages as disappearing by default. The company’s announcement says rollout would continue over coming months, so check whether the feature is present in your app, region, and account before relying on it. Do not generalize the Incognito promise to every Meta AI surface. A normal Meta AI conversation in Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp, or another interface may have different storage, account-linking, and processing rules.
How ordinary Meta AI interactions can affect recommendations
Meta announced that, beginning December 16, 2025, it would use interactions with AI features to personalize content and ad recommendations, with rollout in most regions. Meta says Ads Preferences and feed controls can adjust what you see. It also says conversations about specified sensitive topics—including religious views, sexual orientation, political views, health, racial or ethnic origin, philosophical beliefs, or trade-union membership—are not used to show ads.
Cross-account use depends on Accounts Center links. Meta’s example says WhatsApp AI interactions are not used to personalize experiences across Meta products when the WhatsApp account is not added to Accounts Center. Review that linkage if keeping WhatsApp activity separate from Facebook or Instagram recommendations matters to you. The recommendation policy is described in Meta’s AI recommendation announcement.
Deletion and group-chat boundaries
Meta’s generative-AI privacy explainer says information shared with its AI features may be used to improve products and for other purposes. It says some questions may be shared with trusted partners such as search providers. The explainer also describes a /reset-ai command for deleting information shared in some AI chats across Messenger, Instagram, or WhatsApp. In group chats, Meta AI reads messages that invoke @Meta AI or replies that invoke it. Because that explainer predates the May 2026 Incognito announcement, use it for general context and follow the newer Incognito terms for that specific mode. Meta AI’s practical strengths and limits
- Strength: Incognito Chat is the strongest stated disappearing-chat promise of the three services, if it is available to your account and you use that exact mode.
- Limit: availability is still tied to rollout, app, region, and account.
- Limit: the Incognito description does not establish a retention schedule for ordinary Meta AI chats.
- Limit: ordinary AI interactions can influence recommendations and ads under Meta’s stated conditions.
Which AI chatbot has the best privacy controls for your priority?
If you want a clear training opt-out
ChatGPT is the most straightforward choice when your goal is to stop new personal chats from model improvement while retaining a normal history. Turn off Improve the model for everyone; remember that saved history remains until you delete it.

Gemini can also limit model-improvement use with Keep Activity off, provided you do not submit feedback, but Google continues service and safety processing. Meta’s general materials describe product-improvement use, while the stronger Incognito claims apply only to Incognito Chat.

If you want chats absent from ordinary history
ChatGPT Temporary Chat and Gemini Temporary Chat both remove the conversation from their normal activity views, but their retention windows differ: up to 30 days for ChatGPT safety retention and up to 72 hours for Gemini’s response and safety processing. Meta Incognito Chat is designed to be unsaved and disappearing, but you must verify that the feature is actually enabled for your account.
If human-review exposure is your main concern
No service in this comparison gives you a universal “never reviewed” guarantee across all modes. Google is the most explicit about reviewer handling: human-reviewed chats and related data may remain up to three years, even after activity deletion. ChatGPT states a possible 30-day safety-retention period for Temporary Chat. Meta says its Incognito environment cannot be accessed by Meta, but that statement is limited to Incognito Chat and has not been independently verified.
If you want to avoid recommendation or ad personalization
Meta requires the most careful separation between chatbot privacy and feed privacy because it says AI interactions can inform recommendations and ads. Check Accounts Center, Ads Preferences, and feed controls, and avoid assuming that deleting a chat reverses recommendation models. Gemini’s connected apps and broader Google settings also matter. ChatGPT’s documented controls focus on history, memory, and model improvement rather than an ad-targeting system.
If you use sensitive business or client information
Do not paste confidential material into a personal account merely because a temporary mode exists. For ChatGPT, use the organization’s Business, Enterprise, Edu, or Healthcare workspace rules and confirm administrator retention and access settings. For Gemini, inspect the Google Account and connected-app policies that govern the account you are using. For Meta AI, verify whether the conversation is ordinary or Incognito and whether linked accounts could broaden processing.

- Open Settings → Data controls.
- Turn off Improve the model for everyone if you do not want new personal chats used for model improvement.
- Delete existing chats separately if removal from history is required.
- Start Temporary Chat for a conversation that should not enter ordinary history.
- Review memory, custom instructions, and plugin or connected-service access before using Temporary Chat.
- For work data, confirm the workspace type and administrator retention policy.
Gemini checklist
- Open Gemini Apps Activity and choose a retention period or auto-delete option.
- Turn Keep Activity off if you want future chats excluded from model improvement, and do not submit feedback containing sensitive context.

- Review Accounts Center to see whether WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram accounts are linked for cross-account personalization.
- Use Ads Preferences and feed controls to adjust recommendation and advertising personalization.
- For eligible ordinary chats, consider
/reset-aias described by Meta, while recognizing that it is not a universal deletion command for every AI surface. - In group conversations, remember that Meta AI responds to messages invoking
@Meta AI; do not include another person’s confidential information without consent.
Common privacy mistakes and how to avoid them
Mistaking a training opt-out for deletion
Turning off model improvement prevents a specified future use; it does not erase your existing account history. Delete saved chats separately and check retention terms for temporary modes.
Assuming “temporary” means zero retention
ChatGPT may retain Temporary Chats for up to 30 days for safety. Gemini keeps Temporary Chats for up to 72 hours and may retain human-review data for up to three years. Meta’s strongest disappearing claim is limited to Incognito Chat.
Submitting feedback with private context
On Gemini, feedback can include recent chat context and uploaded or connected-app content. Do not press a feedback control on a sensitive conversation unless you understand what will be sent.
Ignoring connected services
A chatbot’s own switch cannot rewrite a third-party service’s privacy policy. Connected Google apps, ChatGPT plugins or integrations, and Meta account links can change who processes information and how it is used.

Using a personal account for regulated or confidential work
Consumer controls are not a substitute for an organization’s data-processing agreement, retention schedule, access controls, or legal review. Use an approved workspace and follow your employer’s policy.
Verdict: choose the control set, not a generic privacy score
Choose ChatGPT if you want the clearest everyday distinction between keeping chats in history and stopping model improvement, or if you need an organization-managed workspace with stated no-training-by-default treatment. Choose Gemini if activity review, auto-delete periods, and a 72-hour Temporary Chat window fit your workflow, while accepting Google’s continuing service processing and possible long reviewer retention. Choose Meta AI only after confirming Incognito Chat is available when you need its strongest privacy behavior, and separately manage Accounts Center, Ads Preferences, and feed recommendations for ordinary interactions.
The most defensible answer to “Which AI chatbot has the best privacy controls?” is therefore conditional: ChatGPT has the clearest control separation, Gemini has the most explicit activity-retention and reviewer caveats, and Meta’s Incognito Chat has the boldest stated disappearing-chat design but the most important availability and scope qualification.
