Short answer: ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini do not share the same privacy defaults. ChatGPT consumer accounts let you turn off model improvement, while OpenAI says content from Business, Enterprise, Edu, Healthcare, and API products is not used to train models by default. Claude lets consumers choose whether chats improve the model and excludes Incognito chats from improvement use. Gemini uses Keep Activity: with it on, chats can help develop and train Google’s generative-AI models; with it off, future chats are not used for training unless you submit feedback, but Google still keeps them for 72 hours.
Retention is a separate question from training. Gemini publishes an 18-month default auto-delete setting, 72-hour operational retention when Keep Activity is off, and up to three years for chats reviewed by people. Anthropic says improvement-enabled data can remain in de-identified form for up to five years. OpenAI describes different service, deletion, and safety-retention processes rather than one universal number. No assistant is automatically safe for secrets: use the strictest available settings, minimize identifying details, and keep sensitive work in an organization-managed product with a written retention policy.

The three privacy questions you must separate
People often ask whether a chatbot “trains on my chats” as though training, storage, and human access were one switch. They are different controls and can have different time limits.

Model training or improvement
Training means using conversations or related signals to improve a model. A setting that disables training is generally forward-looking. It does not automatically erase earlier conversations, remove operational logs, or undo information already incorporated into a model.

Service retention
Retention is how long a provider keeps a conversation or related records so it can deliver the service, prevent abuse, investigate incidents, process feedback, comply with law, or support an account. A chat can be excluded from model training and still be stored temporarily for these purposes.
Human review
Some providers use trained reviewers or safety teams on a subset of conversations, often to assess abuse, quality, or feedback. Human review is an additional exposure; turning off model improvement is not the same as guaranteeing that no authorized person can access a record.

ChatGPT: training controls without a single retention number
Consumer ChatGPT settings
In a personal ChatGPT account, the Data Controls area lets you manage whether new content is used for model improvement, along with chat history, data export, and deletion features. Turning off model improvement addresses future training use; it does not mean the service instantly stops storing every record needed to operate, secure, or troubleshoot the product.

OpenAI’s privacy policy treats service retention, deletion requests, and safety processing as distinct matters. The exact period can depend on the product, account state, legal obligations, and security needs, so do not present “training off” as a promise of zero storage or immediate erasure. Use available temporary-chat or history controls when you need less persistent conversation history, and verify the current in-product wording because labels and availability can change.
What deletion does and does not establish
Deleting a chat removes it from the account interface according to the applicable product process. It does not let you infer that every backup, abuse-prevention record, or legally retained copy disappears at the same moment. OpenAI’s published policies describe authorized access for service operations; they do not justify saying that a deleted or training-excluded chat can never be viewed by a person.
Organizational ChatGPT products
OpenAI states: “By default, OpenAI does not use content from ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, or ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces to train its models.” The same no-training-by-default language applies to API content. Those products are still subject to their own retention, security, administrator, and contract terms. An organization can therefore impose rules that are materially different from a personal account, including centralized retention or access controls.
Claude: a clear improvement switch and Incognito mode
Model Improvement preference
Anthropic’s consumer documentation gives users a choice about allowing chats to improve Claude. If you do not want ordinary conversations used for that purpose, disable Model Improvement in Privacy Settings. The preference changes future use; it is not a guarantee that old records, safety logs, or already-trained model parameters are removed retroactively.

Why Incognito is different
Anthropic states: “Your Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude, even if you have enabled Model Improvement in your Privacy Settings.” Incognito is therefore useful for a one-off prompt when you want an additional barrier against improvement use. It should still be treated as a service interaction: avoid unnecessary personal data and do not assume that Incognito means no operational retention or no safety analysis.
Five-year de-identified retention
Anthropic’s Privacy Center says data used for improvement may be retained in de-identified form for up to five years. Feedback conversations can also be stored for up to five years. “De-identified” reduces direct account association; it does not mean the original content was never held or that re-identification risk is mathematically zero. If you send feedback about a sensitive answer, assume the conversation can enter the longer feedback-handling path.
Commercial and API Claude
Claude Team, Enterprise, and API services use separate commercial policies. Organizations can have configurable retention, and Anthropic documents six-year defaults for some local session transcripts. That figure is not a consumer-chat promise and should not be applied to every Claude deployment. Before sending regulated or confidential material, have an administrator confirm the exact contract, region, transcript-retention setting, and deletion workflow.
Gemini: Keep Activity, 72 hours, and reviewed-chat exceptions
Keep Activity on
With Keep Activity enabled, Gemini saves chats in activity and may use them to develop and train Google’s generative-AI models. Google’s default auto-delete period is 18 months. You can change it to three months, 36 months, or indefinite retention. These are account-activity settings, not guarantees that every safety or abuse-prevention record follows the same timer.

Keep Activity off
When Keep Activity is off, future chats are not used to train models unless you submit feedback. Google still retains those chats for 72 hours to provide Gemini, process feedback, and protect Google, its users, and the public. Google summarizes this directly: “Future chats are still saved for 72 hours so that Gemini can respond to you, process your feedback, and protect Google, its users, and the public.” Thus activity-off is a short operational-retention window, not zero retention.
Temporary Chat and feedback
Temporary Chat is designed for conversations you do not want saved in normal activity. Check the current Gemini interface to confirm when the temporary option is available on your account. Whether you use Temporary Chat or Keep Activity off, do not send feedback containing confidential text: feedback is an explicit exception to the activity-off training rule and can route the conversation into review and retention processes.
Human review and the three-year record
Google says human reviewers assess some Gemini data. A chat selected for review can be retained for up to three years, and reviewed chats are disconnected from your Google account. Because they are disconnected, deleting Gemini activity does not delete those reviewed copies. This is why account deletion controls cannot be treated as a complete eraser for every derived or separately retained record.

For Gemini used through a work or school account, a Google Workspace administrator may control activity, retention, and access. The controls visible to an individual user can therefore be narrower or different from those on a personal Google Account. Ask the administrator which edition, region, retention rule, and audit process apply before entering organizational data.

- Classify the material. Remove names, account numbers, medical details, customer identifiers, unreleased code, credentials, and anything protected by a contract unless the approved organizational system specifically permits it.
- Separate the account type. Confirm whether you are using a personal account, a business or enterprise workspace, an API project, or a managed school account. Never assume a consumer default carries over to an organization product.
- Disable improvement or activity before starting. In ChatGPT, open Data Controls and turn off model improvement. In Claude, disable Model Improvement in Privacy Settings. In Gemini, turn off Keep Activity or select Temporary Chat.
- Use the least persistent mode available. Claude Incognito is excluded from improvement use. Gemini activity-off chats remain for 72 hours, and Temporary Chat may avoid normal activity history. ChatGPT’s available temporary and history controls vary by product, so read the current label before sending.
- Do not volunteer feedback. A thumbs-up, thumbs-down, written comment, or support submission can create a separate review record. Gemini specifically treats submitted feedback as an exception when Keep Activity is off; Anthropic says feedback conversations can be retained for up to five years.
- Delete what you no longer need. Use the product’s chat and activity deletion tools, then remember that deletion may not cover safety records, reviewed copies, backups, or information already used in training.
- Recheck after policy or interface changes. Retention periods, names, and defaults are volatile. Review the provider’s current privacy page and your account settings before each high-sensitivity project.
Which assistant is safest for sensitive information?
There is no universal winner because “safest” depends on whether your priority is training exclusion, a short operational window, human-review transparency, or administrator control.

For highly confidential work, the safest practical choice is usually to use an approved, administrator-managed deployment with a written retention schedule and no unnecessary identifiers. If you must use a personal account, disable the improvement setting, choose a temporary or Incognito mode, avoid feedback, and share only the minimum text needed to solve the problem.
Why deletion and training changes do not erase every derived copy
Changing a preference prevents specified future use; it does not rewind every previous processing step. Anthropic says changing the training preference or deleting chats excludes data from future training, but a model that has already learned from prior data is not retroactively retrained from scratch simply because you changed the setting. Treat that as a limitation of deletion requests, not as evidence that a provider ignores them.

Similar distinctions can exist for security logs, legal holds, backups, and abuse investigations at other providers even when a public policy does not give one universal number.
Questions to verify in an organization
- Which exact product and edition are employees using?
- Is model-improvement or training use disabled by default, and can an administrator change that setting?
- What is the transcript-retention period, including local session logs and backups?
- Who can access conversations for safety, support, auditing, or legal reasons?
- How are feedback submissions stored and who reviews them?
- What happens when a user deletes a chat, leaves the organization, or requests export?
- Which country or regional policy applies to the account?
- How often will the organization recheck settings after a product-policy change?
Get these answers in writing. A marketing phrase such as “not used for training” is narrower than a complete data-lifecycle guarantee.
