OpenAI began rolling out GPT-Live-1.1 and the smaller GPT-Live-1.1 Quip in ChatGPT Voice on October 15, 2026. The update adds more natural accents and language-specific voice choices for French, German, Hindi, Japanese, Korean and Mexican Spanish, alongside a new English voice called Bubbie. The catalog you see depends on your account, region, plan and app version.
What GPT-Live-1.1 changes
GPT-Live-1.1 is the model powering the latest ChatGPT Voice experience for eligible plans. GPT-Live-1.1 Quip is a mini version used on plans with Quip access. OpenAI describes the release as an accent and voice update rather than a separate ChatGPT product: you still start Voice from an existing ChatGPT conversation, but the available voices now include options tuned to particular languages and regions.

The update matters because a voice can affect pronunciation, rhythm and perceived naturalness when you use ChatGPT for conversation, language practice or spoken assistance. OpenAI says the voices displayed in your picker can vary by region and account, so the list below is the published catalog, not a guarantee that every account will show every option.

Mexican Spanish is a regional choice, not a claim that the same pronunciation applies to every Spanish-speaking country. Likewise, the Brazil entries identify the regional catalog shown by OpenAI; your account may display a different subset.

How to change the GPT-Live voice
- Open the voice settings. In ChatGPT, go to Settings → Voice → Voice.
- Select an available voice. The picker shows the options enabled for your account and region. Choose the language or voice name you want, then close settings.
- Start Voice. On mobile, tap the Voice icon and allow microphone access when prompted. On the web, select the Voice icon in the prompt window.
- Know what happens if you switch mid-chat. Changing the selected voice during an ongoing conversation starts a new voice call in the same chat; it does not erase the conversation history.
Is GPT-Live-1.1 available on the free plan?
Access and time allowances differ by plan. OpenAI’s current Help Center table lists these limits:
| Plan | GPT-Live access listed | Allowance |
|---|---|---|
| Free | GPT-Live-1.1 Quip | Limited access |
| Go | GPT-Live-1.1 Quip | 3 hours |
| Plus | GPT-Live-1.1 | 3 hours |
| Pro ($100/month) | GPT-Live-1.1 | 15 hours |
| Pro ($200/month) | GPT-Live-1.1 | Unlimited, subject to abuse guardrails |
The table describes the current consumer plan allowances; workspace products such as Business and education plans have separately listed limits that can depend on administrator settings. “Unlimited” does not remove abuse-prevention controls, and availability can also be affected by region, parental controls and the version of the ChatGPT app.

Why the conversation can feel more natural
GPT-Live uses a full-duplex interaction model. Instead of waiting for a complete turn before processing audio, it continuously listens while generating speech. OpenAI says the system can decide many times per second whether to speak, pause, keep listening, respond to an interruption or invoke a tool. Its description is: “GPT‑Live is built on a full-duplex architecture, meaning it can listen and speak at the same time.”

For tasks that need web search, deeper reasoning or agentic work, Live can delegate that work to another model while maintaining the spoken conversation.

What Live can do—and what it cannot
Within a supported ChatGPT chat, Live can use web search and memory, display visual results through supported widgets, and work with text, images, plugins and connected apps. These capabilities are in the same conversation rather than a separate voice-only workspace.
Live does not currently support video or screen sharing. Eligible subscribers can use Advanced for those functions, but switching to Advanced is required when you need ChatGPT to see a live camera feed or your screen.

Troubleshooting interruptions and recognition problems
Voice recognition and turn-taking are sensitive to the environment. Background conversations can be picked up, and Live is designed primarily for one-to-one conversations rather than a multi-person room.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Use headphones to reduce speaker feedback and nearby speech.
- Move to a quieter location and check that the intended microphone is selected in your device permissions.
- Verify your network connection if responses pause, arrive late or fail to start.
- Confirm that your app is updated and that your plan, region and workspace settings permit the selected voice.
- If the voice list is missing, reopen Settings → Voice → Voice; the catalog can differ between accounts.
Voice transcripts are not verbatim records of the audio. OpenAI says audio clips from Live and Advanced conversations are retained with the transcript for 30 days, subject to the applicable security, legal and training settings. Avoid treating the transcript as a legal or meeting-grade recording.
Choosing among the new voices
There is no universally “best” voice: availability and personal preference determine the practical choice. For French, German, Hindi, Japanese, Korean and Mexican Spanish, compare the two names shown in your own picker by asking each to read the same short passage. Choose the one whose pacing and pronunciation are easiest for you to follow. Japanese names are displayed with their native spellings, while Mexican Spanish is specifically regional.
OpenAI says more than 150 million people each week talk to ChatGPT using features such as Voice and Dictation. The GPT-Live-1.1 rollout broadens that spoken experience with language-specific options, but it does not change the current requirement to use Advanced for video or screen sharing.
