Message and tool allowances can change with the model, your plan, and system demand. OpenAI may use conversations from individual Free, Plus, and Pro accounts to improve models unless you disable that setting. Temporary Chat provides a separate way to keep a conversation out of history, memory, and model training.
This guide explains what the subscription includes, how to check limits, what happens to your data, and how cancellation and refunds work on the web, iPhone, and Android.

What ChatGPT Plus costs and what it covers
The monthly subscription
OpenAI lists ChatGPT Plus at $20 per month in 2026. That price applies to the ChatGPT subscription, not to API calls. API usage is billed separately under API pricing and account billing; subscribing to Plus does not create an API credit balance.
Recommended Free Tools
Plus expands access to ChatGPT models and tools. Depending on availability, that can include voice conversations, image generation, file analysis, and Deep Research. Feature availability, model names, and access conditions can change, so the model picker and your account plan page are the authoritative places to see what your account currently offers.

What Plus does not promise
Plus does not guarantee an unlimited number of messages, uninterrupted access to every model, or a permanently fixed feature list. OpenAI describes the plan as subject to usage limits, particularly when demand is high. A subscription can improve access without removing capacity controls.
How ChatGPT Plus message limits work
There is no single universal quota
OpenAI says: “To ensure a smooth experience for all users, Plus subscriptions may include usage limits such as message caps, especially during high demand.” The practical limit can vary by system conditions, the model you select, your plan, and other operational factors. OpenAI does not publish one number that applies to every Plus subscriber and every model.
That means a number quoted in an older article, a screenshot from another account, or a limit shown for one model should not be treated as your permanent allowance. Limits can be adjusted as demand and capacity change.
How to see the allowance that applies to you
- Open ChatGPT and check the account or plan area to confirm that the account is on Plus.
- Open the model picker and select the model you intend to use. Look for any usage indicator, cap notice, or reset information shown for that model.
- Repeat the check when you switch models or tools. A limit shown for one model may not describe another model or feature.
- If the interface displays a reset time, treat it as the current estimate for that account rather than a permanent policy.
Checking the account is more reliable than relying on a fixed quota because OpenAI can change allowances over time.
What happens when you reach a cap
ChatGPT may prevent additional messages for the affected model, offer another available model, or ask you to wait until access resets. The exact behavior depends on the model and current system state. Starting a new chat does not guarantee that a model-level limit will disappear.
Rank #2
If a limit appears unexpectedly low, first confirm the selected model and the plan shown in your account. OpenAI’s help guidance says support cannot reset limits. Support can, however, investigate a suspected counting error or an access failure, so include the model, the time of the problem, and the message shown on screen when you contact it.
Is ChatGPT Plus worth it if you might hit a message cap?
Plus is most defensible when you need broader model and tool access often enough to justify $20 each month and you accept variable allowances. It is a poor fit if your main requirement is an unlimited, fixed-volume service.
Questions to ask before subscribing
- Do you regularly need voice, image generation, file analysis, or Deep Research when those features are available?
- Do you benefit from access to models or tools that are not available, or are less available, on the Free tier?
- Can your work tolerate waiting or switching models when a cap is reached?
- Are you comparing the subscription with API use? API charges are separate, so Plus may not reduce an application’s API bill.
During high traffic, paid access may receive broader or more reliable availability than the Free tier, but the plan remains subject to caps. Decide based on the features you actually use and the allowance your account shows, not on an assumed lifetime quota.
Free, Plus, and Pro compared
The following comparison uses the dimensions that matter when choosing an individual plan. OpenAI’s feature names, limits, and Pro availability are changeable; “not stated” means a single comparable value is not established in the available official guidance.
| Plan | Monthly price | Model and tool access | Usage allowances | High-traffic access | Training controls | Cancellation and refund route |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 tier | Core ChatGPT access; exact models and tools depend on current availability | Variable; no universal quota stated | Lower or more restricted availability may apply when demand is high | Can turn off “Improve the model for everyone”; Temporary Chat is available where offered | No recurring subscription to cancel; any paid purchase follows its billing platform |
| Plus | $20 per month (OpenAI listing, 2026) | Broader model and tool access, including voice, image generation, file analysis, and, where available, Deep Research | Variable message or tool caps; no universal number | Designed for broader access, but still subject to limits and demand | Same individual-plan controls as Free; feedback can create an exception | Cancel on the platform that billed you; refund eligibility depends on policy, timing, location, and platform |
| Pro | Not stated in the available official guidance; availability and pricing can change | Access depends on the current Pro offering | Variable; no universal quota stated | Plan-specific priority may apply, but capacity controls can still exist | Same individual-plan controls as Free and Plus | Use the billing platform that charged you; applicable refund rules still apply |
The table is not a promise that every account sees every listed feature. Check the plan page and model picker immediately before subscribing or relying on a tool for time-sensitive work.

Does ChatGPT use your conversations to train models?
Individual plans can be used for improvement by default
For individual Free, Plus, and Pro services, OpenAI may use content to improve model performance. This is different from API usage, which has separate billing and policies. If you do not want ordinary chats used for this purpose, change the data-control setting in ChatGPT.

- Open ChatGPT.
- Open Settings.
- Choose Data Controls.
- Turn off Improve the model for everyone.
This setting is the main account-level control for reducing the use of new individual-plan conversations to improve models. Review it after signing in on a new device or account, because the setting applies to the account you changed.
Use Temporary Chat for a conversation you do not want in history or training
Temporary Chat is a separate mode for sensitive or one-off discussions. OpenAI states: “Temporary chats don’t show in history, don’t use/create memories, and aren’t used to train models.” Select Temporary Chat before sending the message, rather than assuming that an ordinary chat can be converted afterward.
Temporary Chat does not make it appropriate to enter passwords, payment-card numbers, private keys, or information you are not authorized to disclose. It changes the chat’s history, memory, and training behavior; it does not replace sensible security practices.
The feedback exception
Opting out of model improvement does not cover every route by which content can be reviewed. OpenAI says that for individual plans, if you submit feedback on a response—for example, by selecting thumbs up or thumbs down—it may use the entire conversation associated with that feedback to improve its models, even if you previously opted out of model training.
Rank #4
Before sending feedback, remove confidential material from the conversation or avoid submitting feedback on a chat that contains information you do not want included in that review pathway.
How to cancel ChatGPT Plus
First identify who billed you
Cancellation must be completed on the platform that processed the subscription. An account can be used on several devices, but deleting the app or signing out does not cancel a recurring charge.
Web purchase
- Sign in to the ChatGPT account that holds the subscription.
- Open the account settings and subscription or plan-management area.
- Choose the cancellation option and confirm through the final prompt.
- Save the confirmation screen or email and check the next renewal status.
iPhone or iPad purchase
- Open the iOS Settings app.
- Tap your Apple ID name, then Subscriptions.
- Select ChatGPT.
- Tap Cancel Subscription and confirm.
Apple-billed subscriptions must be managed through Apple’s subscription system. Removing ChatGPT from the device does not stop the renewal.
Android purchase
- Open the Google Play Store.
- Open your profile menu and choose Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions.
- Select ChatGPT.
- Choose Cancel subscription and complete the confirmation steps.
Use the Google account that made the purchase. Uninstalling the Android app does not cancel Google Play billing.

What cancellation changes
OpenAI’s stated rule is: “Canceling stops future renewals. It does not automatically refund previous charges.” Cancellation therefore prevents the next recurring charge but does not by itself reverse a payment already taken. Keep access and renewal details visible in the billing platform until the current paid period ends or the cancellation confirmation takes effect.

Can you get a ChatGPT Plus refund?
General rule
Payments are generally non-refundable, subject to applicable legal rights and the exceptions in OpenAI’s policies. A cancellation request and a refund request are separate actions: cancel to stop future renewals, then request a refund if you believe the charge qualifies.
Web and Google Play purchases
For purchases made on the web or through Google Play, submit the request through OpenAI Support. Eligibility can depend on when you bought the subscription, whether it was used, your location, and other policy conditions.
An unused individual purchase may qualify for a discretionary refund request made within seven days when the applicable conditions are met. “Discretionary” means the request is assessed under the policy; it is not an automatic seven-day guarantee.
Apple-billed purchases
If Apple processed the payment, request the refund through Apple rather than OpenAI Support. Apple controls that transaction and applies its own review process.
Residents of the EU, UK, and Turkey
Residents of the European Union, the United Kingdom, and Turkey have a 14-day prorated cancellation right under the stated policy. The amount is prorated rather than necessarily equal to the full monthly payment, and the right remains subject to the applicable legal and account conditions.
Privacy and billing troubleshooting checklist
If you are worried about training use
- Check Settings → Data Controls and turn off Improve the model for everyone.
- Start a new Temporary Chat before entering information you do not want in history, memory, or training.
- Do not submit thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback on a conversation containing confidential information if you do not want the feedback exception to apply.
- Confirm that you changed the setting on the account you actually use.
If you hit a limit unexpectedly
- Confirm the selected model and read the current cap or reset notice in the model picker.
- Check whether a different available model or tool meets the immediate need.
- Wait for the displayed reset rather than repeatedly opening new chats.
- Contact support only when the behavior looks like a counting error or access failure; support cannot manually reset a normal usage cap.
If you were charged after trying to cancel
- Find the receipt to identify whether the charge came from the web, Apple, or Google Play.
- Cancel on that same platform and retain the confirmation.
- Submit a separate refund request through OpenAI Support or Apple, depending on the billing route.
- Include the account email, transaction date, platform, and cancellation confirmation without sending passwords or payment-card details.
Bottom line
ChatGPT Plus is a $20-per-month individual subscription with broader model and tool access, not a fixed unlimited-message contract. Check the allowance shown for your account, disable Improve the model for everyone when appropriate, use Temporary Chat for conversations you do not want in history or training, and cancel through the platform that billed you. Refunds are conditional, and Apple purchases must be handled through Apple.
