ChatGPT can help shoppers discover and compare products by starting with a need—such as a budget, use case, or must-have feature—instead of a brand name. For brands, the practical opportunity is to make accurate product information available through supported catalog and feed routes. That can help products be represented in discovery, but it does not guarantee a recommendation, ranking, click, or sale.
1. Product discovery can start with a shopper’s need
OpenAI describes Shopping Research as a conversation where a shopper explains what they need, then answers follow-up questions so ChatGPT can refine potential matches. Example requests include finding a quiet cordless stick vacuum for a small apartment, choosing between three bikes, or finding an art-loving four-year-old a gift. These prompts describe the job to be done and its constraints, not just a product category or brand. OpenAI’s Shopping Research announcement says hundreds of millions of people use ChatGPT to find, understand, and compare products; that is a broad usage statement, not a count of shoppers or completed purchases.

Implication for brands: Explain who a product is for and what it helps them do, alongside its specifications. Clear use cases may make a product easier to assess against a real request; they are not a published ranking tactic.
2. The experience is designed for multi-constraint comparisons
Shopping Research is intended for decisions involving comparisons, trade-offs, or several constraints. OpenAI says a guide may summarize considerations, present a shortlist with rationale and trade-offs, and compare attributes such as price, size, and features. Product pages should make those attributes easy to find and verify rather than relying on vague claims.
#1 Best Overall
OpenAI’s Shopping Research help guidance advises shoppers to verify product details on retailer sites. A brand’s practical task is to keep specifications, options, and terms clear enough for shoppers to check—not to assume that any one attribute earns placement.
3. Accurate, complete catalog data supports product representation
OpenAI says merchant feeds can improve catalog coverage and provide richer details, including images, pricing, and reviews, while helping keep price and availability current. Shopify describes catalog data such as prices, inventory, images, and variants. The published material does not establish a guaranteed ranking formula or traffic outcome.
Use these as operational checks for your catalog and product pages:

- Include all relevant products and variants, with names and attributes that match the actual item.
- Keep prices and stock status accurate, and make updates promptly when they change.
- Provide useful, consistent product images and details.
- Check that feed data and the corresponding landing page agree.
- Make the product’s intended use and meaningful constraints understandable in plain language.
These checks are practical implications of the data fields described by OpenAI’s merchant information and Shopify’s catalog announcement; they should not be treated as a promise of recommendation inclusion.
4. Merchants have more than one route to share product information
OpenAI says Shopify and Etsy catalogs are integrated and that other merchants can apply to share product feeds. Its merchant page lists SFTP, APIs, and commerce or feed-provider integrations as supported routes; the 2026 product-discovery announcement names Salesforce and Stripe among delivery paths. The right route depends on a merchant’s systems and whether the route is available to it.
An application or feed connection is a way to provide product information, not proof that a brand is already included or that every submitted product will appear. Review the current merchant onboarding details for applicable routes and requirements.

5. Retailer integrations are examples, not an eligibility checklist
OpenAI’s product-discovery announcement identifies Target, Sephora, Nordstrom, Lowe’s, Best Buy, The Home Depot, and Wayfair as integrated into ACP for discovery. OpenAI also says Shopify catalog integration applies to Shopify merchants. Those named examples establish specific integrations; they are not an exhaustive partner list or a rule that a smaller merchant can qualify by resembling one of the retailers.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor other merchants, the relevant question is whether a feed-sharing route is available and whether the product information is accurate and complete—not whether the business matches a named retailer.
6. Shopping Research recommendations are described as organic, not ad placements
OpenAI says Shopping Research results are based on public retail sites and are organic. Its help guidance distinguishes ads from Shopping Research. Do not treat a recommendation as a paid placement, or assume that buying advertising guarantees inclusion in a Shopping Research shortlist.

OpenAI also says chats are not shared with retailers. For brands, this means product discovery should not be presented as access to individual shoppers’ conversations.
7. The retailer remains the source of truth for purchase details
Shopping Research can make mistakes, and prices, stock, and discounts can change. OpenAI tells shoppers to confirm the final details on the retailer’s site. That includes price, taxes, shipping, availability, selected options, return terms, and warranty. Keep product pages and checkout information current so shoppers can verify what they will actually buy.

8. Current guidance prioritizes discovery and merchant-owned checkout
OpenAI’s newer merchant guidance says it is moving away from a standalone Instant Checkout experience and prioritizing discovery followed by purchase on merchant-owned sites or apps. The 2026 product-discovery announcement likewise says merchants can use their own checkout. This is the current direction described in those sources, not a promise that every merchant has the same implementation or experience.
An older 2025 launch article describes Instant Checkout and fees. It should not be read as the current default without accounting for the later change in direction. See OpenAI’s Instant Checkout launch announcement alongside the current merchant page and product-discovery announcement.
9. Availability and onboarding are changing
OpenAI’s merchant page says shopping is currently live in the United States, that it aims to introduce a self-service merchant portal later in the year, and that it plans to expand over time. These details can change, so merchants should consult the current page before choosing a feed route or planning around a market launch. A feed can give a merchant more control over the product information provided, but OpenAI does not promise a particular placement or amount of traffic.
What brands can reasonably measure and control
Brands can control the quality and consistency of their product information, their participation route where available, and the accuracy of their own product and checkout pages. They cannot infer a guaranteed recommendation position or sales result from those actions. The official sources described here do not provide an independently measured conversion lift, sales impact, or quantified ranking benefit for brands.
A useful internal audit is to compare catalog completeness, variant coverage, image quality, price and inventory accuracy, update frequency, feed availability in the relevant market, and consistency between feed and landing page. These are operational checks derived from published feed fields and comparison attributes, not an official scorecard.
