They do not let the parent read a teen’s conversations, inspect chat history, see prompts or responses, search usage logs, or watch real-time activity. Safety alerts contain a brief explanation of a serious concern—not a transcript.
The feature is therefore a configuration and safety-notification system, not a surveillance dashboard. The exact controls shown depend on the account, region and whether a particular ChatGPT feature is available.

How ChatGPT parental controls work
A parent or guardian links their ChatGPT account to a teen’s account through an invitation. Either person can start the invitation, and the link becomes active after it is accepted. One parent can link with multiple teens. A teen can be linked to only one parent or guardian at a time. Either person can unlink the accounts.

After linking, the parent gets a separate control panel for supported settings. The parent does not receive access to the teen’s account or conversation list. The teen continues to use ChatGPT in their own account, subject to teen protections and any settings that apply to that account.

OpenAI’s Help Center states the privacy boundary directly: “Parental controls do not let parents or guardians read or monitor a teen’s conversations.” That includes the content of individual chats and the ability to observe activity as it happens.
What a linked parent can control
The available controls can change as features roll out, and some appear only when the related feature applies to the account. OpenAI’s current list includes the following:

Defaults differ by setting. A control may be enabled, disabled or unavailable depending on the teen account, product surface and rollout status. Check the controls displayed in the linked account rather than relying on an older screenshot or a menu path from another version.

Quiet hours limit scheduled access
Quiet hours are schedules intended to limit when the teen can access ChatGPT. They are the closest parental-control feature to a time restriction. The schedule affects access during the configured period; it is not a report of what the teen did before or after those hours.
Study hours change the starting mode
Study hours do not block ChatGPT. They make eligible new conversations in the main ChatGPT experience start in Study mode during the scheduled period. Study hours do not apply to conversations with GPTs or to Project conversations.
These distinctions matter when setting expectations: quiet hours are an access schedule, while Study hours are a learning-oriented default for new chats. Neither feature gives a parent a transcript or an activity timeline.

Changes may not be retroactive
OpenAI notes that settings changes may take time to apply. Some changes affect only new conversations, while existing chats retain the settings they had when they were created. If a change appears ineffective, start a new conversation after allowing time for the account to synchronize, then check whether the conversation is in the main ChatGPT experience rather than a GPT or Project.
What safety notifications can tell a parent
Safety notifications are enabled by default when accounts are linked, although OpenAI says it can take a few hours before notifications can be sent. Depending on the contact details and notification preferences on the account, an alert may arrive by email, SMS or push notification.
Notifications are limited to serious situations identified through OpenAI’s safety processes. The Help Center describes alerts for:
- Serious self-harm concerns identified by specially trained reviewers.
- For Chat conversations only, reviewer-identified behavior that may be associated with disordered eating and could signal a health concern.
- A linked teen account being banned for violent activity, an expansion described in OpenAI’s announcement dated September 29, 2025 and updated July 13, 2026.
An alert can include a short description of the concern, an account action such as deactivation, and support resources when available. It does not include the teen’s conversation, transcript, prompt history or chat list.
The announcement describes the alert design as narrow. It is not intended to trigger simply because a teen writes fictional material, discusses a game, follows news, talks about politics, expresses general anger or asks an abstract question. A notification is therefore not a general-purpose content report and should not be treated as proof of everything a teen has said.
What parents cannot monitor through this feature
Parental controls do not grant any of the following:

- Reading a teen’s conversations or opening individual chat threads.
- Searching chat history, prompts, responses or deleted conversations.
- Watching real-time activity, including what the teen is typing or which screen is open.
- Viewing a complete usage log, list of sessions, or account-wide activity report.
- Listening to Voice Mode sessions through the parent account.
- Reviewing image prompts, generated images, GPT conversations or Project conversations.
- Receiving transcripts as part of a safety notification.
A parent who needs to understand how a teen is using AI must rely on direct conversation, agreed family rules and the teen’s voluntary participation in reviewing an interaction. The link itself is not a hidden monitoring channel.
Teen protections and the Reduce sensitive content setting
Reduce sensitive content is on by default for teen accounts while they are in ChatGPT for Teens. OpenAI says it is intended to reduce exposure to topics such as graphic violence, risky viral challenges, sexual or romantic roleplay, violent roleplay and extreme beauty ideals.
A linked parent may be able to turn that safeguard off. Doing so does not convert the account to an adult account, remove product limits, or disable every other safety system. The safeguard also does not promise that every response will be appropriate; it is a risk-reduction measure rather than a guarantee.

Turning it off to solve a false positive, for example, does not give the parent additional visibility into chats and does not eliminate other teen-account protections.
Age prediction, verification and account status
Age prediction can place an eligible account in ChatGPT for Teens even when a date of birth was previously supplied. The account holder can review the displayed age category at Settings > Account.
If age verification is offered, only the teen can complete it; a parent cannot verify on the teen’s behalf. OpenAI says Persona handles the verification, deletes an uploaded identification document or selfie within seven days after verification, and does not send that identification material to OpenAI. This process determines age classification. It does not let a parent see chats.

When ChatGPT identifies a linked account holder as 18 or older and the account leaves ChatGPT for Teens, parental controls and teen notifications stop. The account holder then controls the settings. That person may later accept a new invitation to link accounts again, but the previous parental-control relationship does not continue automatically.

How to set up a link without assuming access to chats
The labels and placement can change, so use the parental-controls area shown in the current ChatGPT account rather than following an outdated screenshot. The general process is:
- Open the parental-controls option. The parent or teen can begin the invitation from their own ChatGPT account.
- Choose the linking role. Follow the prompt identifying the account as a parent or guardian or as a teen.
- Send the invitation. Enter the other person’s account details as requested and send the invitation.
- Accept from the other account. The link is not active until the invited person accepts it.
- Review the controls shown. Check Reduce sensitive content, model-improvement use, saved memories, Voice Mode, image generation, Study mode and any Codex or ChatGPT Work options that appear.
- Set schedules if needed. Configure quiet hours for access limits and Study hours separately if the goal is to encourage Study mode rather than block use.
- Confirm notification details. Make sure the parent’s available email, SMS or push preferences are current. Safety alerts may take a few hours to begin.
After setup, explain to the teen exactly what the parent can change and what remains private. Clear expectations prevent a safety alert from being mistaken for a promise of complete supervision.
Common misunderstandings and fixes
“Study hours will stop my teen from using ChatGPT.”
They will not. Study hours start eligible new conversations in Study mode; they do not block access. Use quiet hours when the objective is a scheduled access limit.
“Turning off Reduce sensitive content removes teen restrictions.”
It does not. The change affects that safeguard only. The account can still be subject to teen protections, product limits and other safety systems.
“A safety alert means I can read the underlying chat.”
You cannot read it through parental controls. The alert is a brief description of a serious concern, possible account action and support information when available.
“A setting changed, but an old chat still behaves the same way.”
Some settings apply only to new conversations, and synchronization may take time. Wait for the account to update, then test with a new conversation in the relevant ChatGPT surface. Check whether the conversation is a GPT or Project, because Study hours do not apply there.
“The control is missing from my account.”
Not every option applies to every account. Codex network access and the cloud browser in ChatGPT Work require the corresponding feature, and availability can vary by rollout. Confirm that the accounts are still linked and review the settings currently offered rather than assuming a missing option is an error.
“The teen wants to end the link.”
Either person can unlink the accounts. Unlinking ends the parental-control relationship; it does not give the parent a copy of past conversations or create a retrospective activity report.

Technical settings work best when paired with a simple agreement that covers when ChatGPT may be used, what information should never be entered, how to handle an alarming response and when an adult should be told. The controls can enforce a schedule or turn off a feature, but they cannot judge context in every conversation and cannot replace an ongoing discussion about responsible AI use.
For example, a family might use quiet hours overnight, leave Study hours on during homework time, keep Reduce sensitive content enabled and agree that the teen will show an adult any response that causes concern. The parent receives only the narrowly defined safety alerts described above, so the family rule should not assume that every risky interaction will generate a notification.
OpenAI’s announcement quotes Robbie Torney, Senior Director of AI Programs at Common Sense Media, calling parental controls “a good starting point” and emphasizing that they work best with conversations about responsible AI use, clear technology rules and active involvement. That is the practical scope of the feature: it can shape access and settings while leaving ordinary conversation content private.
Bottom line for parents
Linking accounts gives a parent selective control over settings and schedules plus limited alerts for serious safety situations. It does not provide chat transcripts, history, real-time monitoring or a complete usage report. Set quiet hours when access must be limited, use Study hours when new chats should begin in Study mode, review the available feature switches, and treat safety notifications as exceptional warnings rather than a window into the teen’s conversations.
