If a ChatGPT conversation is missing, first determine whether it was a Temporary Chat, created while you were logged out, archived, deleted, or created in a different account or workspace. Temporary chats and logged-out sessions do not behave like normal saved chats, while archived chats can be brought back. Deleted chats cannot be restored.
Start with the five checks that determine what happened
Use this order so you do not waste time searching for a conversation that was never eligible for history.

- Look for a Temporary Chat indicator. A temporary conversation is intentionally excluded from normal history unless you save it as a regular chat while it is still open.
- Confirm that you were signed in. OpenAI says logged-out users cannot save chat history; the thread is available only during that current browser session.
- Verify account, sign-in method and workspace. A Google, Apple, Microsoft or email-password login can lead to different ChatGPT accounts. Business or other multi-workspace users must select the workspace where the chat was created.
- Search history and inspect Archived chats. A chat that is not visible in the sidebar may still exist under search or may have been archived.
- Decide whether it was deleted. OpenAI states that deleted chats cannot be restored through ChatGPT or OpenAI Support.
Temporary Chat: the most common reason a conversation is not saved
Temporary Chat is designed for a session that should not appear in your normal conversation history. OpenAI’s Help Center says that if you do not save a temporary chat, it will not appear in history and cannot be reopened from history after you leave it.

Check the conversation header and composer for a Temporary Chat label or indicator. The exact placement can differ between the web app and mobile apps, so use the visible label rather than relying on the sidebar. If the indicator is present, the absence of the thread from history is expected behavior, not necessarily an account failure.
Save a temporary conversation before leaving
- Keep the temporary conversation open.
- Use the on-screen option to save or convert it to a regular chat. The wording and location can vary by device and app version.
- Wait for the regular-chat view to appear, then confirm that the conversation has a normal title and is listed in history.
Once saved, the conversation follows the ordinary retention rules for the account or workspace. If you already left an unsaved Temporary Chat, OpenAI does not provide a history entry that you can reopen. OpenAI’s current guidance allows a safety copy of temporary chats to be retained for up to 30 days, subject to legal, security and de-identification exceptions; that copy is not a user-facing recovery archive.
Logged out: why the thread disappears after the session
While logged out, ChatGPT can display a conversation in the current browser session, but OpenAI says you are not able to save your chat history. The thread is therefore tied to that session rather than to an account.
If the logged-out tab is still open
Do not close the tab or start a new private window while you are trying to preserve the text. Copy important content to a secure document, and use any available sign-in or save prompt in the page. Signing in creates an account context for future chats, but it does not guarantee that an earlier logged-out thread will be imported into history.
If you already closed the session
There is no account history entry to search because the conversation was never attached to an account. Browser history may reopen the page shell, but it does not recreate server-side conversation data after the session has ended. Treat any still-open logged-out thread as time-sensitive.
Check account, sign-in method and workspace before assuming data loss
A missing conversation is often present under a different identity. ChatGPT can treat these as separate account contexts:
- The same email address reached through different authentication methods, such as email login versus a social sign-in.
- A personal account versus an organization-managed account.
- Different workspaces selected from the workspace switcher.
Verification procedure
- Open your profile or account menu and note the displayed email address.
- Sign out, then sign back in using the exact method used when the conversation was created. If you originally chose “Continue with Google,” for example, use that route rather than entering a password for what appears to be the same address.
- If your account has more than one workspace, switch to each relevant workspace and check its history and archived area.
- Search for a distinctive phrase from the conversation instead of relying only on the automatically generated title.
Workspace retention policies can remove data independently of your personal settings. A conversation created in one workspace will not necessarily appear in another, even when the same person belongs to both.
Search history and inspect Archived chats
A sidebar is not a complete diagnostic. Older conversations may be omitted from a compact list, and archiving intentionally removes a chat from the regular sidebar without deleting it.
Use ChatGPT Search
- Open ChatGPT Search from the app’s search control.
- Enter a word or phrase that appears in the conversation’s messages. Try several uncommon terms if the first search returns nothing.
- Open a matching result and confirm the date, title and message content.
Unarchive a conversation
- Open Settings.
- Go to Data controls.
- Open Archived chats. The exact label can vary by device or app version.
- Select the conversation and choose the unarchive or return-to-history action.
Archiving changes visibility, not the normal retention period. Regular and archived chats remain saved until you delete them or an applicable workspace retention policy removes them.
Refresh, reauthenticate and check for an OpenAI incident
If the account and archive checks are correct, the history list may be stale or the service may be having an incident.
- Refresh the ChatGPT page or fully close and reopen the mobile app.
- Sign out and sign back in to reload the account’s conversation index.
- Check the OpenAI Status page for an active incident affecting chat history, login or conversation loading.
- Try another supported browser or device only after confirming the same account and workspace, so you do not accidentally create a second identity context.
An incident can make existing chats temporarily absent from the interface without meaning that they were deleted. Wait for service recovery before repeatedly deleting, exporting or recreating conversations.

Deleted chats cannot be restored
Deletion is different from archiving. OpenAI removes a deleted chat from the account view immediately and schedules permanent deletion within 30 days, subject to stated legal, security or de-identification exceptions. OpenAI also states that neither ChatGPT nor Support can restore a deleted chat.

If the chat contained information you may need, check whether you previously exported it, copied it, downloaded an attachment or stored the content elsewhere.
Request a data export when a retained chat still cannot be found
After checking identity, workspace, search, archives and service status, request a data export from the account’s data controls. OpenAI describes export as a way to review data associated with an eligible account.
- Open Settings and then Data controls.
- Choose the data-export option and complete the confirmation steps shown for your account.
- When the export arrives, inspect the included conversation data and account information for the missing thread.
An export is a diagnostic record, not a repair tool. It cannot recreate an unsaved Temporary Chat, a logged-out session that ended, or a deleted conversation. Availability and timing can depend on account type and workspace administration.
Do not confuse chat history with model-improvement or memory settings
“Improve the model for everyone”
This control governs whether eligible conversations may be used to improve models. Turning it off does not delete chats and does not remove regular conversations from your history. A chat can remain listed while model-improvement sharing is disabled.

Memory
Memory controls personalization information that ChatGPT may use across conversations. It is separate from whether a regular chat is listed in history. Changing memory settings will not bring back a deleted, unsaved or logged-out conversation.
When a conversation is still open but history is failing
Protect the only visible copy first. Keep the tab or app screen open, copy critical text, and save any files or images you need. Then confirm whether the chat is temporary and whether you are signed in. If it is a regular chat, perform the account, workspace, search and refresh checks without deleting the visible thread. Once the conversation appears in history, open it from the list to verify that the full message sequence is present rather than assuming the title alone proves it was saved.
When to stop troubleshooting
Stop searching for a restore feature when one of these conditions is confirmed: an unsaved Temporary Chat was left, a logged-out session ended, or the conversation was deleted. The practical options are then limited to text you copied, files you downloaded, an earlier export or another copy you deliberately kept. For a regular chat that should still exist, the remaining escalation path is to verify the account and workspace again, check OpenAI Status, and use a data export to inspect the eligible account’s retained data.
