ChatGPT ads now span three distinct experiences: sponsored placements below some answers, a newly announced visual ad format planned for image-generation sessions, and Sponsored Agents that users can choose to talk with. The visual format is the newest: OpenAI said on October 5, 2026, that it plans to begin testing it in the United States later in October, so it should not yet be treated as a broadly available feature.
What the three ChatGPT ad formats look like
| Format | Where it appears | What the user sees or does | Status described by OpenAI |
|---|---|---|---|
| Response ads | Below the end of a ChatGPT response | A separate unit labeled “Sponsored.” OpenAI’s advertiser documentation lists an advertiser name, favicon or logo, headline, description, landing page, and image as possible components. One or more units may appear when there is a relevant match. | Documented as part of the ads pilot. OpenAI’s August 2026 update lists the United States, United Kingdom, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, and South Korea for the pilot. |
| Visual ads during image generation | During an image-generation experience | A visual showing product inspiration, product use, or experiences made possible by a product or service. OpenAI says it will be labeled and kept separate from the image ChatGPT is creating. | Announced October 5, 2026; OpenAI said the initial test was planned for later in October in the United States, for Free and Go users. |
| Sponsored Agents | After a user sees an ad and chooses to start a conversation | A clearly labeled conversation with a business-sponsored agent, distinct from ChatGPT’s independent answers and the original chat. | OpenAI says it is testing the experience with select advertisers in the United States. |
OpenAI’s October announcement calls the visual ad a separate placement, not an ad inserted into the image generated for the user. The distinction matters: response ads are text-and-creative units beneath an answer, while the new format is designed to appear in the image-generation flow. The announcement does not establish that the visual test has started or that it is available to every eligible user. OpenAI’s announcement of the visual ad format describes the planned test.
How response ads are presented
Response ads sit below the answer rather than inside its text, and OpenAI says they are labeled “Sponsored” and visually separated from the response. The advertiser-facing documentation describes possible elements rather than promising that every unit will contain all of them: a brand identifier, headline, description, landing page, and image. A match is not guaranteed for every conversation. OpenAI’s Ads in ChatGPT: The Basics and its advertising help page describe the unit and matching process.
How OpenAI says ads are matched and what advertisers receive
OpenAI says ad selection can consider the live conversation and its intent, the ad’s title and copy, the advertiser’s landing page, advertiser-provided context hints, and targeting selections. If personalization is enabled, select signals from a user’s broader ChatGPT experience may also be considered. Context hints help guide matching, but OpenAI says they are not exact-match keywords and do not guarantee delivery in particular conversations.

According to OpenAI’s help documentation, advertisers do not receive users’ chats, chat history, memories, or personal details. They receive aggregated, non-identifying performance information, such as total views or clicks. These are OpenAI’s descriptions of its systems and policies, not an independent audit of how they operate. The Help Center’s explanation of ad matching and data provides further detail.
Do ads change ChatGPT’s answers?
OpenAI says ads do not influence ChatGPT’s answers, and that sponsored placements are separate from those answers. This is the company’s stated policy; the cited announcements and help pages do not provide independent measurement proving how the system behaves in every case. For readers, the practical distinction is to treat a labeled ad as promotional content, not as part of ChatGPT’s answer. OpenAI’s ads-pilot announcement and rollout update state the company’s position.
Who may see ChatGPT ads?
OpenAI’s current help documentation says ads may be shown to Free and Go users, and are not shown to Plus, Pro, or Business users. It also says accounts belonging to people under 18 are ineligible. OpenAI’s February 2026 test announcement additionally excluded Enterprise and Education accounts. Because the pilot and eligible regions can change, check OpenAI’s current ads help page for the applicable plan and location rather than assuming every account in a listed country will see ads.

The visual-format announcement names a narrower initial scope: a planned US test for Free and Go users. That does not establish its availability in the other countries named for the broader ads pilot. OpenAI also says ChatGPT reaches 1.2 billion people each week; that is the company’s October 2026 figure, not an independently verified audience count. The October announcement gives both the planned test scope and the reach figure.

What is established—and what is not—about the new format
OpenAI has described the visual placement and its intended separation from generated images, but the October 5 announcement does not report click-through rates, conversions, revenue, or other measured performance for the format. It therefore supports a description of what the test is intended to look like, not a claim that the format improves advertiser results or user experience. Businesses interested in advertising can find OpenAI’s campaign setup and measurement information at OpenAI Ads. OpenAI’s September announcement also discusses advertising plans and sponsored agents: Reimagining advertising with AI.
