Short answer: ChatGPT and Gemini both read web pages, but they connect to your browser in different ways. ChatGPT’s Chrome integration is built around your existing Chrome environment: the profile, signed-in sessions, open tabs and installed extensions that you authorize it to use. ChatGPT’s separate built-in desktop browser runs inside the ChatGPT app and keeps a different browser state. Gemini in Chrome is a side panel inside Chrome. It shares the current tab by default for a new chat, lets you add up to 10 recent tabs, and connects browser work to Google services such as Gmail, Calendar, Maps, YouTube and Workspace.
That makes the choice practical rather than ideological. Choose ChatGPT Chrome when preserving an existing Chrome login, profile and extensions is the priority. It can work with open-tab context when you use the Chrome integration and grant the requested permissions. OpenAI’s Chrome walkthrough describes starting a new tab, reading an internal dashboard, interacting with page controls and filling out a form on sites where the user is already signed in. In other words, ChatGPT Chrome is intended to work in the browser you are already using rather than making you recreate every login in a separate window.

That does not mean every tab is automatically exposed to every conversation. The extension has to be installed, permissions have to be approved, and the task must have access to the relevant browser context. A page in another profile, a tab you have not authorized, or content blocked by the site may not be available. Treat the extension’s permission prompt as the boundary of what ChatGPT can inspect or operate.
What the separate ChatGPT desktop browser does instead
OpenAI documents a built-in browser inside the ChatGPT desktop app. That browser has its own browser state, so it does not automatically inherit the cookies, signed-in sessions or extensions from your normal Chrome installation. It can work across multiple tabs within that built-in browser and download files there, but those tabs are separate from the Chrome windows you already have open.
This distinction explains many apparently contradictory answers to “Can ChatGPT see my tabs?” The answer is yes for the authorized Chrome integration, but no automatic inheritance should be assumed when you use the desktop app’s built-in browser. If a task depends on an existing login or extension, use the Chrome integration rather than the built-in browser.

The exact labels can change as the integration is updated, but the documented workflow is straightforward:
- Install the official Chrome integration. Use the ChatGPT/Codex Chrome extension supplied through OpenAI’s documented setup flow, not an unrelated third-party extension.
- Sign in to the requested account. The extension needs to be connected to the ChatGPT account you intend to use.
- Review permissions before approving them. Confirm that the permissions match the pages and controls you expect ChatGPT to use. Do not approve broad access casually on a shared or managed computer.
- Open the target page in your normal Chrome profile. If the site requires a login, sign in yourself first. The Chrome walkthrough specifically covers work on already-authenticated sites.
- Give a bounded instruction. Name the tab, the information to read and the action to take. For example: “Read the sales dashboard in this tab, identify the three overdue accounts and draft a follow-up form, but do not submit it.”
- Watch page interactions. ChatGPT may use visible controls and fill fields. Check values, recipients and totals before allowing a consequential submission.
- Revoke or change access when finished. Browser-extension permissions are part of your security boundary. Remove access or disable the extension if you no longer need it.
A precise instruction is safer than “handle everything.” Separate research, drafting and submission into distinct steps so you can review the result before an irreversible action.
Can Gemini compare multiple tabs?
Yes. Gemini in Chrome is designed for cross-tab comparison and consolidation. When a new Gemini in Chrome chat starts, the current tab is shared by default. You can turn off that sharing, then add other tabs manually. Google’s help documentation says you can share up to 10 recent open tabs across browser windows.

The limit is important. Gemini is not promising an unlimited view of every tab in every Chrome window. If you have more than 10 relevant pages, group them into batches, ask Gemini to create a structured summary for each batch, and then compare those summaries in a later chat. Keep the titles or URLs in your prompt so you can tell which page supports each conclusion.

- Open the pages in Chrome. Put the material you want compared in recent tabs. The pages can be in more than one browser window, subject to the recent-tab limit.
- Open the Gemini side panel. Start a new chat while viewing the page you want as the initial context.
- Check the shared-tab indicator. The current tab is shared by default. Stop sharing it if it contains information that is not part of the task.
- Add the other tabs manually. Select the recent tabs you want Gemini to use, up to 10 in total.
- Specify the comparison criteria. Ask for a table with the same fields for every page, and request that missing information be marked as not stated rather than inferred.
- Verify quotations and numbers. Open the relevant tab and check important claims, especially prices, dates, legal language and technical specifications.

What can Gemini in Chrome do beyond summarizing?
Google’s Gemini in Chrome help page lists several page-level capabilities: summarizing article takeaways, explaining complex topics, comparing or consolidating pages, making recommendations, carrying out multi-step actions, drafting Gmail messages and looking up past photos or albums. The practical value depends on the account, connected services and the permissions available in your region or organization.
Google also describes integrations with Calendar, YouTube and Maps. For example, a browser conversation can help turn information on a page into a calendar-related task, find relevant YouTube material or use Maps-oriented context. These are Google-native connections rather than generic access to every application installed on your computer.
Workspace and managed accounts
Gemini in Chrome can connect with Google Workspace in supported environments. A personal Google account and a managed work account may expose different controls, data boundaries or administrator policies. If the side panel does not show an expected Workspace option, the feature may be disabled by an administrator, unavailable for that account edition or still rolling out.

Can Gemini in Chrome book things for me?
Gemini’s optional auto browse is the clearest documented example of browser automation in this comparison. Google says eligible users can ask it to compare products, search for deals, add items to a cart, find and book travel, make restaurant reservations and schedule appointments.
Auto browse is not a silent background agent. Google requires you to review the plan before the task starts. The task runs visibly in the browser and can pause for sign-in, a CAPTCHA or another sensitive step. You can take over the browser or stop the task. Review the final details yourself before confirming a purchase, reservation or appointment.
Auto browse requirements and limits
According to Google’s auto-browse help documentation accessed October 16, 2026, the listed requirements are:
- You must be at least 18 years old.
- The feature is listed for availability in the United States.
- Your device language must be English.
- You need a personal Google account.
- You need Google AI Pro or Google AI Ultra.
- You need a current version of Chrome.
- Access is subject to gradual rollout.
- Auto browse is not available in Incognito and, on the cited help page, is not available on iPhone or iPad.
These conditions describe eligibility, not a guarantee that every site will work. A website may require a CAPTCHA, hardware security key, additional identity verification or a payment confirmation that Gemini cannot complete. When that happens, the automation pauses for you.
Which is better for browser automation?
There is no single winner because the documented capabilities are different. Gemini has the more explicit public description of a browser agent that plans and performs visible multi-step tasks, including shopping and booking, with a review step and takeover controls. ChatGPT’s Chrome documentation demonstrates practical page interaction—reading a dashboard, using controls and filling a form—while preserving the existing Chrome session. The available OpenAI documentation does not establish identical auto-browse eligibility, coverage or behavior.

How account and login handling differ
ChatGPT Chrome: continuity with your profile
The main advantage is continuity. If your normal Chrome profile already has an authenticated dashboard, a work portal or an extension that supplies page functions, the Chrome integration can work in that environment after you approve access. You do not need to copy session data into ChatGPT’s separate built-in browser.

The trade-off is that the integration is close to sensitive browser state. A signed-in tab may reveal account information, internal reports or actions available to that account. Use a dedicated browser profile for high-risk work, and keep personal and work sessions separated.
Gemini in Chrome: explicit sharing plus Google connections
Gemini makes tab context visible through its sharing controls. The current tab is shared by default for a new chat, and you can stop sharing it or add specific recent tabs. Google account and Workspace connections can extend the assistant beyond the page, but those connections are governed by account type, administrator policy and rollout status.
Because tab sharing is explicit, it is good practice to check the shared-tab list before asking about confidential material. A side panel that remains open while you navigate is convenient, but convenience should not replace checking which page is currently in context.
Availability, rollout and device differences
Gemini in Chrome was announced by Google Chrome on September 18, 2025, initially for Mac and Windows desktop users in the United States with English language settings. The announcement described cross-tab comparison and integrations with Calendar, YouTube and Maps. Availability can change as Google expands the rollout, and a feature shown in an announcement may not be enabled for every account.
Auto browse has narrower documented requirements: United States availability, English device language, a personal Google account, age 18 or older, Google AI Pro or Ultra, current Chrome and gradual rollout. It is not available in Incognito and was listed as unavailable on iPhone and iPad on the cited help page accessed October 16, 2026.
ChatGPT availability also depends on the account, desktop app, extension release and permission settings. The built-in browser and Chrome integration are separate paths, so installing one does not imply that the other is enabled.
Privacy and safety checklist for either assistant
- Use separate profiles. Keep work, personal finance and general browsing in different Chrome profiles when possible.
- Share the minimum context. Select only the tabs needed for the answer or task.
- Inspect sensitive fields. Check names, account numbers, addresses, quantities and recipients before submission.
- Require a preview. Ask the assistant to explain what it intends to do before it sends, buys, books or deletes anything.
- Handle interruptions yourself. Sign-in prompts, CAPTCHAs and identity checks should be completed only when you recognize the site and understand the action.
- Stop on unexpected changes. If a page redirects, changes price or asks for an unfamiliar permission, pause the task.
- Review permissions regularly. Remove extension access or disconnect service integrations that you no longer use.
- Follow workplace policy. Managed accounts may have rules that are stricter than the product’s default behavior.

Choose ChatGPT Chrome when profile continuity matters most
Use ChatGPT’s Chrome integration if your task begins with an existing Chrome session: an internal dashboard, a web application with an active login or a workflow that depends on installed extensions. It is also the logical choice when moving the task into a separate browser would lose the state you need.
Choose Gemini in Chrome for tab comparison and Google workflows

Choose Gemini auto browse only when the eligibility and risk fit

Auto browse is missing
- Check age, country, device language, account type and Google AI plan requirements.
