Then try a private window to check whether browser data or an extension is interfering. An unexpected logout can also involve cookies, a network or VPN, a temporary service problem, or an account restriction—so the right fix depends on the error and where it occurs.
Why did ChatGPT log me out?
“Automatically logged out” describes what happened; it does not identify the cause. OpenAI’s guidance points to several possibilities: a mismatch in sign-in method, browser settings or extensions, network interference, a temporary service issue, or an account that has been suspended or deactivated. Note whether the problem happens on the web or mobile, in one browser or several, and whether you see a specific warning. Those differences help narrow down the next step.

How to regain access to ChatGPT
1. Use the original sign-in method
Go to the official ChatGPT sign-in page and choose the method you originally linked to your account: email and password, Google, Microsoft, or Apple. Using a different method from the one used to register can cause an authentication error, even if the email address is the same.

2. Test a private window or another browser
Open ChatGPT in a private or incognito window and try signing in again. If that works, the issue may involve the original browser’s saved site data or an extension. Try another browser or device, and temporarily disable extensions that could affect sign-in, such as privacy, script-blocking, or security extensions.
If you clear browser data, target ChatGPT and OpenAI site data where possible. Clearing all cookies can sign you out of other websites.

3. Check cookies and JavaScript
Make sure cookies—including third-party cookies—and JavaScript are allowed for the ChatGPT and OpenAI sign-in domains. Blocked cookies or scripts can interfere with verification and login flows.
For the specific iOS error “Cookies are disabled” when signing in with Google, OpenAI says to disable Safari’s “Block Cookies” setting. That advice applies to this documented Google sign-in error; it does not mean cookies explain every unexpected logout. See OpenAI’s sign-in guidance.
4. Test for network interference
If you use a VPN, proxy, secure DNS feature, or network security filter, temporarily turn it off and try again if it is safe to do so. You can also test a different network. These checks are relevant to some login errors, not a universal fix. OpenAI’s error troubleshooting guide also recommends checking browser and network conditions for certain failures.
5. Check whether ChatGPT is having a service issue
If the error is generic, the page is blank, or sign-in fails across more than one browser or network, check OpenAI’s status page for an incident. If there is no reported issue, refresh the page or restart the app, then try signing in again.

What to do if you see a suspicious-login warning
If the screen says “We have detected suspicious login behavior,” follow OpenAI’s specific troubleshooting advice: clear browser cache and cookies, try another network, and turn off an active VPN. OpenAI recommends waiting up to one hour before trying again because multiple failed attempts can trigger a temporary restriction. Avoid repeatedly retrying during that wait.
What if you still cannot sign in?
Check for an account notice
If OpenAI has suspended or deactivated your account, you will not be able to sign in normally. Check your email for an OpenAI notice and follow the instructions it contains.
Contact Support with useful diagnostics
If the same problem continues across browsers, devices, and networks, OpenAI’s error guide advises collecting a HAR file and browser console errors, with timestamps, and contacting Support. Include the exact error message and describe which environments you tested so the issue can be investigated.
Can you recover chats from a logged-out session?
OpenAI says a chat started while logged out is accessible only during the current session in the same browser; it is not saved to account history. Do not assume that signing back in will add those conversations to your history. See OpenAI’s sign-in guidance.
