Charlotte Banks Can Require Office Attendance—Truist’s Five-Day Mandate Shows the Cost

Yes. Charlotte’s banks can set stricter onsite schedules for many employees, and Truist has made that shift tangible: hybrid employees in the area moved to five office days beginning January 5, 2026. The policy affects more than 3,000 local workers, while the wider return-to-office push is colliding with high vacancy, costly office build-outs and large investments that banks must justify.

What Truist changed in Charlotte

Truist required employees who had been working under its hybrid arrangement to work onsite five days a week from January 5, 2026. The Charlotte Observer reported on November 12, 2025, that the change affected more than 3,000 Charlotte-area workers.

Truist said the decision was based on its view that “in-person teamwork drives stronger results for our clients, teammates and stakeholders.” In a statement reported by Banking Dive, the bank also said it was “committed to fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation and client-focused excellence.”

The local mandate is significant even though it does not cover every Truist employee. Banking Dive reported that Truist had about 38,500 employees companywide as of September 30, 2025. Business North Carolina reported the bank had $554 billion in assets.

How Charlotte’s largest banks compare

Truist is not the only major bank requiring substantial office time, but its five-day rule is stricter than the arrangements described for two of its largest local peers.

Bank Required onsite schedule described in reporting Who may work remotely Timing or local footprint Stated rationale or office investment
Truist Five onsite days for employees previously covered by the hybrid policy The cited reports do not list a broad remote-day allowance after the change; role-specific exceptions are not detailed Effective January 5, 2026; more than 3,000 Charlotte-area workers affected Truist cites stronger in-person teamwork, collaboration and client-focused performance
Bank of America Many client-facing employees work onsite five days Some staff are allowed one or two remote days Part of a combined Charlotte workforce of more than 40,000 with Wells Fargo The cited report does not attach a separate Charlotte office-investment figure to the bank
Wells Fargo Policy described in a 2024 Axios Charlotte report: three office days and two days at a location of choice Some staff retain two non-office days under that policy; many client-facing roles work onsite more often Included in the combined local workforce of more than 40,000 with Bank of America $500 million multi-year investment in Charlotte offices, according to Axios Charlotte

The comparison is uneven by design: the available reporting describes policies at a high level, and individual business lines, managers and client-facing responsibilities can change the schedule. “Hybrid” therefore does not mean the same number of remote days for every employee.

Why the return carries a large employer cost

Charlotte has a lot of unused office space

Trinity Partners recorded total Charlotte office vacancy of 21.2% in the fourth quarter of 2024. A mandate that brings more people back can increase utilization in buildings a bank already leases, but it does not automatically eliminate excess space across the market.

Fitting out space is expensive

Trinity Partners reported that office build-outs could cost as much as $140 per square foot in its 2024 and 2025 reporting. A bank expanding, renovating or reconfiguring a large headquarters therefore faces a substantial capital bill before accounting for furniture, technology, security, cleaning and ongoing occupancy costs.

Utilization is under a microscope

Trinity Partners said the remote-work versus return-to-office debate had brought increased scrutiny of efficient space use and greater involvement from human-resources teams. Banks must decide whether assigned desks, conference rooms and collaboration areas are being used often enough to justify their footprint, rather than assuming that a fuller building is automatically a better investment.

Wells Fargo shows the investment side of the decision

Axios Charlotte reported a $500 million multi-year investment in Wells Fargo’s Charlotte offices. The same 2024 report described a schedule of three office days and two days at a location of choice.

That combination illustrates the trade-off facing large employers: a bank can spend heavily on offices while still preserving a limited hybrid arrangement. The investment may support upgraded workspaces and collaboration, but it also raises pressure to demonstrate that the space is being used effectively.

What the policy costs employees—and what is not measured

For employees moved from hybrid work to five office days, the immediate burden is the loss of remote days and the time and logistics associated with commuting. The cited Charlotte reporting does not provide a reliable local dollar figure for added transportation, meals, parking or other commuting expenses, so no precise average cost can be assigned.

There is also no dependable Charlotte-specific figure in the cited sources for mandate-driven attrition or a productivity change. Those outcomes can vary by role, commute, pay, team structure and whether an employee has another option. Treating a national estimate or an anecdote as a Charlotte result would overstate what is known.

TRALT Office Chair Ergonomic Desk Chair with Lumbar Support Black, 1
  • High-Resilience Molded Foam Seat – Won’t Flatten After 1 Year – Instead of budget foam that hardens and sags within months, the seat is built with high-density, high-resilience molded foam that bounces back day after day. It maintains its shape and cushioning far longer, preventing the “bottoming out” discomfort common at this price point
  • Adjustable Lumbar, Not a Fixed Afterthought – Unlike flimsy plastic supports that crack or lose tension, this chair features a durable lumbar mechanism that adjusts depth to match your spine’s natural curve. Genuinely relieves lower back pressure during long sitting sessions
  • Breathable Mesh Backrest – No Peeling, No Heat Buildup – Say goodbye to flaking faux leather. The high-tension mesh back promotes continuous airflow, keeping you cool in warm environments and eliminating the mess of peeling upholstery. Mesh holds up significantly better over time and looks professional years later
  • Anti-Sink BIFMA Certified Gas Cylinder – A common failure in budget chairs: the pneumatic cylinder loses pressure and slowly sinks during use. Our Class 3 BIFMA-certified gas lift is built to hold its height reliably, so your chair stays exactly where you set it—year after year. No more sudden drops or mid-work adjustments
  • Heavy-Duty Metal Core Base (330 lbs Capacity) – Thin plastic bases can crack under stress, especially near the cylinder hub. We use a reinforced nylon base with a metal core, providing the durability and peace of mind you need. Smooth-rolling, 360° silent casters glide across hardwood, tile, or carpet without scratching or catching

Why banks say office attendance matters

Truist’s explanation centers on teamwork, client service and collaboration. Banking Dive also quoted Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon calling Zoom “an unbelievable tool” but “a tool,” and saying it was not “a mode of operating successfully at the competitive level we want to operate at.” Those are management judgments, not independent measurements of Charlotte productivity.

Client-facing work is the clearest dividing line in the local policies described by Business North Carolina: many employees who regularly serve clients work onsite five days, while some other staff retain one or two remote days. Banks are therefore tightening attendance unevenly rather than applying one identical rule to every job.

What Charlotte employees should verify

  1. Whether the rule covers your role. Check the written policy for your business line, location and client-facing status rather than relying on the companywide label “hybrid.”
  2. The effective date and required days. Confirm whether the schedule is five office days or a specified number of days at a company location, and whether the date applies immediately or at a later transition point.
  3. How exceptions are handled. Ask where approved accommodations, travel, field work or other documented exceptions are recorded and who makes the decision.
  4. Which workplace counts as onsite. A policy may distinguish a designated office from a temporary worksite or another location of choice.
  5. What happens if the schedule cannot be met. Obtain the escalation process from human resources or your manager before an attendance problem becomes a disciplinary issue.

The practical answer to “Can Charlotte banks force employees back?”

Truist’s January 2026 change demonstrates that a major Charlotte bank can end a broad hybrid arrangement and require five onsite days for affected employees. Bank of America and Wells Fargo still have limited hybrid schedules for some staff in the reporting, especially outside many client-facing roles. The cost is shared: workers absorb more commuting time and expenses, while employers confront a 21.2% office vacancy rate, build-outs that can reach $140 per square foot and major capital commitments such as Wells Fargo’s $500 million Charlotte investment.
