Charles Schwab vs. Fidelity at a glance
The headline prices are close, but the practical experience differs once you look beyond the commission line. The table below separates established pricing statements from features that can change or depend on the security, account, or current program rules.

| Retail account minimums | $0 account fees and $0 minimums, according to Fidelity’s current pricing page | “No account or trade minimums,” according to Charles Schwab’s pricing material | Either can accommodate a new investor starting with a modest balance. |
| Online U.S. stock and ETF commissions | $0 | $0 online base commission | Trading commission alone should not determine the choice. |
| Options commissions | $0 online commission for U.S. options; contract and regulatory charges may still apply | Confirm the current contract charge and regulatory fees before trading | Options users must compare the complete per-contract schedule, not just the advertised commission. |
| Fractional shares | Purchases can be made with as little as $1; Fidelity’s comparison material lists a $1 minimum transaction value | Availability and eligible securities should be checked for the intended holdings | Fidelity is more convenient for investing every dollar of a small contribution. |
| Proprietary zero-expense-ratio index mutual funds | Available in Fidelity’s lineup; Fidelity also identifies no-minimum Fidelity mutual funds | Fidelity proprietary funds are not automatically portable to Schwab | Check whether the fund can be held at the receiving broker before transferring. |

| Futures | Not identified as a deciding advantage in the supplied comparison | NerdWallet’s 2026 comparison characterizes Schwab as offering futures access | Futures are specialized and add risk; this matters only if you specifically need the capability. |
Both firms are regulated financial institutions, but regulation does not make one automatically suitable for every investor. Your asset allocation, tax situation, and behavior matter more than a small difference in a published feature list.

What you actually pay: commissions are only one part of cost
Fidelity says it charges no retail account fees or minimums and $0 online commissions for U.S. stocks, ETFs, and options. Charles Schwab states that it has no account or trade minimums and $0 online base commissions for stocks and ETFs. Those statements describe the standard online transaction, not every possible cost.
Fund expenses continue after a $0 trade
An ETF or mutual fund can charge an annual expense ratio regardless of which broker holds it. The expense is taken from the fund’s assets, so it does not appear as a separate brokerage invoice. Compare the exact share class and expense ratio in the fund prospectus. A 0.10% annual expense ratio costs approximately $10 per year for each $10,000 invested before considering returns; that arithmetic is an illustration, not a prediction of performance.
Spreads, regulatory charges, and transaction fees
“Commission-free” does not remove the bid-ask spread on an ETF or stock, exchange and regulatory fees, or a possible transaction fee on a mutual fund outside a broker’s preferred program. A limit order can control the maximum price you will pay, but it cannot guarantee execution. For a buy-and-hold investor, low turnover usually limits the effect of trading costs, while fund expenses recur for as long as you own the investment.
Options, bonds, and CDs require a separate comparison
Fidelity’s current commissions material lists $1 per bond or CD for secondary-market transactions and free online U.S. Treasury trades. The quoted $1 is per bond or CD, and the security’s price and spread still matter. If you trade options, ask both brokers for the complete contract, assignment, exercise, and regulatory-fee schedule. If you buy corporate bonds, municipal bonds, or brokered CDs, compare the displayed yield, markup or markdown, available inventory, and settlement details rather than looking only for a zero commission.
Advisory services can change the cost structure
A self-directed brokerage account is different from a managed portfolio. An advisory program may charge an asset-based fee, incorporate a different set of investments, or impose program-specific minimums. Decide first whether you want to choose and rebalance investments yourself. Then read the advisory agreement and fee schedule for the specific service; neither broker’s standard brokerage commission schedule answers that question.

Why Fidelity often wins for small, automated purchases
Fidelity’s fractional-share feature is the clearest practical advantage for a long-term saver who contributes a small amount on a schedule. Fidelity says investors can “invest in fractional shares with as little as $1,” and its comparison material lists a $1 minimum transaction value. That allows a $25 or $50 contribution to be invested nearly in full rather than waiting until a whole share is affordable.
How fractional investing changes a recurring plan
Suppose an investor wants to split $60 each month across three ETFs. With dollar-based fractional trading, the investor can direct $20 to each holding even when a share costs more than $20. Without that capability, the investor may need to buy whole shares, leave cash idle, or alter the allocation manually. The difference is most noticeable in the early years, when contributions are small relative to share prices.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check the eligibility rules before relying on the feature. Fractional trading can be limited to certain securities, order types, trading windows, or transfer arrangements. Confirm how dividends, corporate actions, and outgoing transfers are handled for fractional positions. A fractional position that cannot transfer in kind may be liquidated during a move, creating a taxable event in a taxable account.
Automatic investing still needs a review
Automation reduces the temptation to time the market, but it does not select an appropriate portfolio. Set the contribution amount, destination security, and frequency only after deciding on your target allocation. Review the plan when your income, tax bracket, emergency fund, or risk tolerance changes. Keep a record of the recurring instructions so you can cancel or modify them before a transfer or rebalance.
Fidelity’s zero-expense-ratio index funds: useful, but not universally portable
Fidelity identifies “ZERO expense ratio index funds” in its comparison material and offers no-minimum Fidelity mutual funds. Eliminating a fund expense ratio can reduce the ongoing cost of a particular index strategy, especially in a taxable or retirement account held for many years. The benefit depends on the fund’s benchmark, tracking quality, tax characteristics, and whether it is the right exposure for your plan.

Proprietary mutual funds versus portable ETFs
A Fidelity proprietary mutual fund may not be available for purchase at another broker, and an existing position may not transfer in kind. An ETF from an independent provider is generally more portable, although the receiving broker’s eligibility and transaction rules still need confirmation. Before choosing a proprietary fund, ask:
- Can the fund be held at the broker you might use later?
- Would a transfer require selling the position?
- Would a sale create capital gains in a taxable account?
- Does the alternative fund track the same index and have a comparable expense ratio?
- How are automatic purchases and dividend reinvestment handled?
In an IRA, selling to move between investments generally does not create a current capital-gains tax, but a transfer still needs to follow the custodian’s process. In a taxable account, an unwanted sale can realize gains or losses. Do not switch solely because a fund has a zero expense ratio if the tax or portability consequence is more important to your situation.
When Schwab’s broader marketplace is the better fit
Charles Schwab’s Mutual Fund OneSource provides access to thousands of funds. That breadth can matter if your employer plan rollover, tax strategy, or preferred manager depends on a specific mutual fund family. NerdWallet’s 2026 comparison characterizes Schwab as having a slightly larger investment selection and futures access.
Use the marketplace advantage for a defined need
A large menu is valuable when it solves a concrete problem: a particular municipal-bond fund for your state, a share class unavailable elsewhere, a target-date series you have already evaluated, or access to a strategy required by an investment policy. More choices also increase the risk of selecting overlapping funds, expensive share classes, or a portfolio that is difficult to rebalance. Write down the desired exposure and maximum expense ratio before browsing the catalog.
Verify transaction status for each mutual fund
OneSource availability does not mean every fund is free to trade under every circumstance. Check whether the fund has a transaction fee, a short-term redemption fee, an investment minimum, or a purchase restriction. Read the current prospectus and Schwab’s transaction-fee schedule for the exact fund and account type. If you are transferring an existing position, confirm whether it can remain invested or must be sold.

Cash treatment can quietly change long-term returns
Uninvested cash is part of the portfolio, even when you think of it as temporary. The 2026 comparison cited by NerdWallet gives Fidelity an edge for uninvested-cash yield, but yields and sweep rules change. The rate available when you open an account is not a permanent promise.
Identify the default core position
Read the account-opening disclosures to find out where idle cash goes by default: a bank sweep, a money-market fund, or another core position. Compare the current yield, liquidity, insurance structure, and conditions. A bank sweep may provide FDIC insurance within applicable limits and bank-network rules; a money-market fund is a security and is not an FDIC-insured deposit. Neither structure should be described as risk-free in every circumstance.
Match the cash vehicle to the purpose
Cash needed for a near-term bill should be immediately available and not exposed to unnecessary market fluctuation. Cash earmarked for a long-term allocation may be invested according to your plan rather than left idle. If you routinely carry a large balance while waiting for purchases, even a modest yield difference can outweigh a small trading-cost difference. Recheck the core position after major rate changes and whenever the broker updates its disclosures.

The right broker can differ by account type. The same fund and cash rules do not produce the same tax result in a taxable account and a retirement account.

Taxable brokerage account
Prioritize tax-efficient funds, accurate cost-basis tracking, dividend handling, and the ability to transfer positions without selling. Ask how fractional shares transfer and how the broker reports noncovered or older lots. If you may need the money before retirement, compare settlement timing and cash access as well as investment selection.
Best Value
Traditional or Roth IRA
Compare the investment menu, automatic contributions, beneficiary process, and transfer paperwork. A Roth IRA’s tax treatment makes it especially important to avoid accidental withdrawals during a transfer. Use a trustee-to-trustee transfer when appropriate and confirm that the receiving account is the same IRA type before assets move.
Health savings account
HSA availability and investment features are account-specific. Verify eligibility, contribution handling, investment minimums, debit-card or reimbursement functions, and transfer rules directly with the current account agreement. Do not assume that a brokerage’s IRA features apply to an HSA.
Beneficiaries and estate instructions
Set beneficiaries after the account opens and review them after marriage, divorce, births, or a death in the family. Beneficiary designations can control the destination of retirement assets and may override instructions in a will. Keep a current record of the account numbers and the firm’s procedure for updating beneficiaries.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesService, tools, and support: what to compare beyond the app
Long-term investors may interact with a broker only a few times a month, but a transfer, beneficiary change, restricted security, or tax document can make support quality important. Compare phone hours, branch access, secure-message response expectations, and the clarity of the transfer process. Service preferences are personal; a nearby branch or a strong planning conversation may be worth more to you than a small yield difference.
Research and planning tools
Evaluate whether the website provides the data you actually use: fund screening, portfolio allocation views, tax-lot selection, capital-gains estimates, dividend schedules, and downloadable statements. Test the workflow with a watchlist before moving assets. A tool that shows many metrics is not automatically better if the information is difficult to interpret.
Mobile and desktop workflows
Check how easily you can set recurring investments, change a beneficiary, download tax forms, place a Treasury order, and locate cost-basis information. Long-term investing rewards a process you can repeat reliably. If an important task requires a phone call each time, record that friction in your decision rather than assuming you will never need it.
Active-trading and futures features
Schwab’s futures access is relevant only if you understand futures’ leverage, margin, expiration, and loss risks and have a defined use for them. A long-term index investor should not select a broker merely because it offers a more complex product. Keep speculative activity, if any, separate from the retirement allocation and learn the broker’s margin rules before enabling it.

| Using Fidelity’s zero-expense-ratio index mutual funds | Fidelity | Benchmark, tax efficiency, fund availability, and future portability |
| Keeping a sizable uninvested balance | Fidelity may have an edge based on the 2026 comparison | Current core position, yield, liquidity, and insurance or money-market structure |
| Accessing thousands of mutual funds through OneSource | Schwab | Transaction-fee status, minimums, redemption rules, and share-class availability |
| Using Schwab’s service network or specific tools | Schwab | Branch location, support hours, and the exact feature you need |

How to compare the two accounts before transferring money
- Write the portfolio in exact terms. List each ticker or mutual-fund symbol, target percentage, contribution schedule, and account type. “A broad stock fund” is not specific enough for a transfer decision.
- Check availability and total cost. Look up each fund at both brokers, including expense ratio, transaction fee, minimum, spread, and automatic-investing eligibility.
- Inspect the cash disclosures. Record the default core position, current yield, liquidity, and applicable insurance or fund structure. Treat the yield as changeable.
- Test the investor workflow. Before moving assets, open the public or logged-out tools and confirm that recurring purchases, dividend reinvestment, tax-lot selection, statements, and beneficiary updates are understandable.
- Ask about portability. Confirm whether every existing holding can transfer in kind, whether fractional positions are liquidated, and whether a proprietary mutual fund must be sold.
- Calculate tax consequences. For taxable assets, estimate gains that could be realized by selling nonportable funds. For retirement assets, use the receiving firm’s transfer instructions and avoid taking a distribution by mistake.
- Move accounts carefully. Start an institution-to-institution transfer through the receiving broker, keep cash available for fees or unsettled activity, and download statements and cost-basis records before the old account closes.
- Reconcile after the transfer. Compare positions, share quantities, cost basis, beneficiaries, recurring instructions, and dividend settings with your original records.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Choosing on commission alone: $0 trades do not erase fund expenses, spreads, regulatory fees, or advisory charges.
- Confusing a broad marketplace with a free marketplace: confirm each mutual fund’s transaction status and minimum.
- Ignoring idle cash: a large uninvested balance can make the core position more important than a small difference in stock commissions.
- Assuming every fund transfers: proprietary mutual funds and fractional shares may require special handling.
- Chasing a temporary yield: cash rates change; read the current disclosure and review it periodically.
- Overlooking taxes: selling a nonportable taxable position can create gains even when the new investment is similar.
- Adding complexity without a purpose: futures, options, and margin can increase risk and are unnecessary for a straightforward buy-and-hold plan.
- Failing to update beneficiaries: an old designation can send assets somewhere you no longer intend.
Bottom line
Choose Fidelity when your plan depends on very small recurring purchases, $1 fractional investing, Fidelity’s zero-expense-ratio index mutual funds, or competitive handling of uninvested cash. Choose Charles Schwab when a broad mutual-fund marketplace, Schwab’s service ecosystem, or futures access addresses a specific need. If both offer the securities you want, compare the current core position, transfer rules, automation, and support experience; the broker that makes your intended strategy easiest to execute consistently is the better long-term choice.
