Bitcoin’s quantum threat is a risk today, but Charles Edwards argues that a credible, time-bound plan to neutralize it could make that risk an upside catalyst. If developers publish concrete migration steps before a cryptographically relevant quantum computer (CRQC) can attack exposed keys, investors could remove a large uncertainty discount and reprice BTC sharply higher.
Why quantum risk could push Bitcoin higher
Edwards’s thesis is about the response, not about a quantum attack creating value. In comments reported by Cointelegraph, he said that if Bitcoin Core developers announced a roadmap within a few months and explained how the problem would be solved over roughly two years, “that would be amazing news.” He added that such a plan could remove much of the risk “pretty much overnight” and that a move of “double digits probably” could follow.

The argument is that markets may apply an uncertainty discount when the timing and mechanics of a quantum attack are unclear. A dated migration plan would not eliminate the engineering work, but it could make the risk measurable: users, exchanges, miners and custodians would know which outputs must move, which software changes are required and how long the transition is expected to take. The upside would come from reduced uncertainty and improved confidence in Bitcoin’s ability to coordinate a protocol change.
The Bitcoin Magazine video published October 15, 2026, places this discussion alongside Federal Reserve policy, possible U.S. government purchases, stimulus, exchange-traded-fund flows, interest rates, liquidity, hash rate, production cost and MVRV. Its chapter list marks the quantum-roadmap discussion at 14:50 and AI and encryption risk at 17:21, presenting quantum readiness as one possible driver of the next all-time high rather than as a standalone price forecast.

Can a quantum computer break Bitcoin?
Bitcoin uses elliptic-curve signatures: ECDSA for older outputs and Schnorr signatures for Taproot-era spending. A sufficiently capable CRQC could derive a private key from a revealed public key and then authorize a fraudulent spend. Chaincode Labs describes this as a potential threat to the ecosystem, not an attack that exists today.
Public-key exposure is therefore the key distinction. Coins whose public keys are already visible have a more direct attack path. Legacy pay-to-public-key outputs and addresses that have been reused are the most obvious examples. By contrast, a standard hashed-address output generally keeps the public key hidden until the owner spends; once a transaction reveals that key, the exposure changes.
How much bitcoin may be exposed?
Chaincode Labs estimated in a 2025 report that about 6.26 million BTC, valued at approximately US$650 billion at the report’s stated valuation, could be potentially vulnerable. That is an exposure estimate, not a prediction that all of those coins will be stolen. Actual losses would depend on when a CRQC appears, how quickly owners migrate, which outputs remain publicly exposed and whether the network can enforce emergency protections.

| Output or practice | Quantum concern | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Legacy pay-to-public-key coins | Public key is already exposed | A CRQC would not need the owner to make a new payment before attempting key recovery |
| Reused addresses | Previous spending may have revealed the public key | Later receipts to the same address can remain exposed |
| Unspent hashed-address outputs | Public key is generally hidden until spending | They gain protection from key hiding until a transaction reveals the key |
When could “Q-Day” arrive?
No date is established. Edwards discussed a two-to-nine-year range in a 2025 Investor’s Podcast interview and cited approximately 2,300 logical qubits as a possible threshold for breaking Bitcoin’s elliptic-curve cryptography. The interview also distinguished logical qubits, which include error correction, from physical qubits reported by hardware companies; those counts are not directly comparable.
Edwards said Bitcoin’s elliptic-curve system could be exposed sooner than RSA and noted that IBM had a more conservative 2029 projection than some other companies. These are interview assessments, not a consensus timetable.
Chaincode Labs takes a broader view, saying expert and government estimates place CRQC arrival within the next decade. In a survey cited in its 2025 report, one-third of global experts assigned at least a 50% probability to CRQCs capable of breaking Bitcoin cryptography emerging between 2030 and 2035. The report also notes U.S. government and NIST plans to deprecate vulnerable cryptography by 2030 and disallow it by 2035.

What a credible Bitcoin response would require
Quantum migration is a governance and engineering project. The proposed response is not one switch; it combines new signature schemes, script changes, wallet practices and a staged process for moving funds.

Developers would need to specify the quantum-resistant signature approach, activation mechanism, testing milestones, wallet support and deadlines for exposed outputs. Edwards’s bullish scenario depends on a plan that is concrete enough for markets to evaluate, not a general promise to address the issue later.
2. Add quantum-resistant spending rules
A soft fork or related consensus upgrade could introduce quantum-secure scripts. Chaincode describes an approximately two-year contingency track for urgent protection, alongside an approximately seven-year path for a more comprehensive redesign. Those figures describe planning horizons, not guaranteed completion dates.

3. Move vulnerable coins in stages
Owners, custodians and exchanges would have to transfer exposed balances into quantum-resistant outputs. Safer address-generation practices and avoiding address reuse would reduce future exposure while the broader migration proceeds.
4. Coordinate the ecosystem
Wallet software, exchanges, mining pools, hardware devices, custody systems and payment processors would all need compatible support. Governance is a central risk: a technically sound proposal still requires agreement on activation, deadlines and treatment of coins that are not moved.

What could make the thesis bearish instead?
The same uncertainty that creates upside can create a severe downside scenario. If a CRQC appears before users can migrate exposed outputs, an attacker could target public-key-visible coins, undermine confidence and force emergency changes. Chaincode calls the potential consequences ecosystem-wide because theft on the estimated scale could destabilize markets and network governance.

That is why a roadmap is not equivalent to safety. The market effect would depend on the roadmap’s credibility, implementation progress and evidence that the most exposed coins are actually moving. A vague announcement, a delayed activation or incompatible wallet support would leave the uncertainty discount largely intact.
Is quantum risk already priced into BTC?
There is no established market measure showing how much of Bitcoin’s price reflects quantum exposure. Some investors may already discount the risk, while others may treat a CRQC as too remote to matter in current valuation models. The evidence supports a conditional view: a credible mitigation plan could trigger a fast repricing, but neither the size nor the timing of that move is certain.
Investors should separate three questions: how soon a CRQC might exist, how many coins are exposed when it arrives, and whether Bitcoin can complete migration beforehand. Treating those as one forecast obscures the main decision point—the time available to coordinate a response.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Does quantum mining pose the same danger?
Not according to Chaincode’s assessment. Quantum advantages in mining face physical and economic constraints, while private-key recovery from exposed public keys is the clear and immediate planning concern. A quantum discussion focused only on faster hashing therefore misses the primary risk: unauthorized spending.
What to watch next
- A Bitcoin Core proposal that names a quantum-resistant signature scheme and activation path.
- Testnet or production wallet support for quantum-resistant outputs.
- Guidance for identifying legacy pay-to-public-key coins and reused addresses.
- Exchange and custody deadlines for migrating exposed balances.
- Independent estimates of logical-qubit requirements, rather than headline physical-qubit counts.
- Evidence that miners, nodes and major service providers can adopt the change without a prolonged chain split.
Edwards’s upside case is therefore a timing bet on preparation. If Bitcoin demonstrates an orderly, credible migration before a CRQC arrives, removing uncertainty could be bullish. If quantum capability outruns coordination, the same issue becomes a material source of loss and disruption.
