Character.AI provides an official data-export request on both its website and mobile app. Submit it as soon as possible: Character.AI says processing can take 3–4 weeks, then emails a download link that expires seven days after it is sent. Download the archive immediately and keep the original plus a second copy in separate locations.

What a Character.AI export does—and why you should request one now
An export is Character.AI’s official way to request a copy of account data that the service makes available to you. It is different from copying a few visible messages or saving a screenshot: you submit a request, wait for processing, and then download an archive from a link sent to the email address associated with your account.

That is an estimate, not a guaranteed delivery time, so the practical approach is to request the export before you urgently need it. When the archive is ready, the emailed download link remains valid for 7 days from the time the email is sent. Missing that window can leave you without a usable download until you resolve the issue through official support.

There is an additional continuity reason to avoid waiting. In an October 12, 2026 company update, Character.AI reported that it had initiated a voluntary Chapter 11 process while pursuing a court-supervised sale. The same update said the platform remained up and running, subscriptions were active for the time being, and users could still delete accounts or export data through the app or website. Business status can change quickly during a court process, so users who consider their chats important should start an export while they can access the service.
How to request all available account data
Use the path that matches the device where you are signed in. Labels can change slightly as the interface is updated, but these are the official routes documented by Character.AI.
On the website
- Open Character.AI and sign in.
- Open Profile.
- Select Profile Settings.
- Open Account.
- Choose Manage Account & Data.
- Select Export data and submit the request.
The documented sequence is Profile → Profile Settings → Account → Manage Account & Data → Export data. After submission, watch the email account attached to Character.AI for the completion message.

In the mobile app
- Open the app and sign in.
- Open Profile.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Export my data and submit the request.
If the app and website show different wording, use the route that exposes the export control rather than assuming one platform has a different type of archive. The official guidance confirms an export request is available on both.
What to do while the export is processing
Because delivery may take several weeks, make the waiting period part of your backup plan instead of treating the request as the backup itself.

- Confirm the account email. Make sure you can open the address associated with Character.AI. If you no longer control it, resolve that access problem before the export is ready.
- Monitor spam and filtered folders. The completion message can be routed away from the primary inbox.
- Do not delete the account while waiting. An export request is not a guarantee that data will remain available after account deletion.
- Keep access to the device you use for downloading. You will need enough free storage for the archive and any extracted copy.
- Record the request date. A note helps you recognize when the 3–4 week estimate has passed and gives support a useful timeline if you need help.
When the email arrives, download the archive immediately rather than postponing it. The seven-day validity period starts when Character.AI sends the message, not when you first notice it.
How to download and preserve the archive
Use a two-copy workflow
- Open the completion email and follow the download link before its seven-day window ends.
- Save the downloaded archive in a clearly named folder on a computer, for example with the account name and download date.
- Keep the untouched original archive. If you extract files for easier reading, place the extracted folder beside it rather than replacing the original.
- Create a second copy on a separate medium, such as a USB flash drive or a reputable cloud-storage account.
- Open the copied archive or a representative selection of extracted files to confirm that the transfer completed successfully.
- Protect both copies with the storage system’s available encryption, access controls, and strong account authentication.
A second copy protects against a failed drive, accidental deletion, or loss of the computer holding the first copy. Keep at least one copy physically separate from the other; two folders on the same failing disk are not meaningful redundancy.

For most users, a computer copy plus either an unplugged USB copy or a cloud copy is a practical balance. Cloud storage is easier to reach while traveling, whereas an unplugged USB copy is insulated from many online-account attacks. If the chats are sensitive, encrypt the archive before putting it on removable or shared storage and keep the encryption key somewhere separate.
If you cannot log in or cannot reach the export control
Character.AI’s official Account Issues category is the starting point for login problems, locked-account recovery, password resets, profile management, and missing verification emails. Use that category when an export request is blocked by sign-in trouble or loss of access to the account email.
Match the symptom to the recovery path
- Password or sign-in failure: use the password-reset or account-recovery guidance in Account Issues before trying to submit the export again.
- Locked account: follow the locked-account recovery instructions; repeated attempts with incorrect credentials can make troubleshooting harder.
- Verification email missing: check spam, search for Character.AI mail, confirm that the mailbox is not full, and then use the missing-verification-email guidance.
- Changed or inaccessible email address: explain that loss of mailbox access is preventing an export download and provide the account details requested by official support. Do not send passwords or private authentication codes in a support message.
- Export option missing: update the app, sign out and back in if appropriate, and check the web route as an alternative. If neither route exposes the control, report it through Account Issues.
Support can verify the account and explain available recovery options, but an export request cannot be downloaded until you can receive the completion email or otherwise complete the service’s identity checks.

What happened to chats from the retired beta site?
Character.AI’s September 24, 2024 retirement notice said the old website would no longer be accessible. It stated that recent chats were available on the new site or mobile app and described a manual migration path for older conversations.
Historical migration process
- Open the new Character.AI site or mobile app and sign in to the same account used on the beta site.
- Look for the Migrate chats or Migrate chat now option.
- Start the migration for chats older than six months, following the prompts shown in the current interface.
The retirement notice said, All chats will be preserved and migrated.
That is historical guidance from 2024, not a promise that today’s buttons, timing, or archive layout are unchanged. If an old conversation is important, locate it in the current site or app after migration and include the resulting account data in your export request.
The official pages reviewed for the current export do not itemize every file, field, memory, persona, attachment, or metadata element in the archive. Therefore, do not assume that every historical chat variant, saved memory, persona setting, or hidden system field will appear exactly as it did in the interface. Preserve important conversations in the export, but also save a readable copy from the current app or site when the exact wording matters.

Character.AI documents an Improve the Model for Everyone control. On the web, open Settings → Account → Manage Account & Data → Model Improvement. In the app, open Settings → Data & Privacy.
The documented opt-out applies to new content: after opting out, new content will not be used to train generative AI models. Character.AI also says some uses for search, recommendations, and safety classifiers may continue. Changing this setting does not replace an export and does not retrieve material that is already missing. Treat it as a forward-looking data-use choice, then make a separate backup of conversations you want to retain.

Common failure points and practical fixes
No completion email arrives
Check the mailbox tied to the account, including spam and filtered folders. Confirm that you submitted the request while signed in to the intended account. If the waiting period substantially exceeds the stated 3–4 week estimate, use Account Issues and include the date of the request, the account email, and the fact that the completion message has not arrived.
The link has expired
The download link is valid for seven days from dispatch. If that period has passed, do not rely on an old bookmark or forwarded copy. Use official Account Issues support to ask what replacement-download or new-export option is available for your account.
The archive downloads but will not open
Download it again from the original message, check that the file size is nonzero, and extract it with the operating system’s built-in archive tool or a reputable archive utility. Keep the first download untouched until you have a verified copy. If repeated downloads are incomplete, report the problem through Account Issues with the filename, approximate size, device, and operating system.
You can see a chat in the app but not in the archive
Do not infer that a missing file means the conversation was deliberately deleted. The current documentation does not publish a complete archive inventory. Save the visible conversation through the app or website, note the account and date, and ask official support whether that data type is included in the export.

A compact checklist for protecting important chats
- Submit the export from Profile settings on the web or Export my data in the app.
- Record the submission date and keep access to the associated email.
- Watch the inbox and spam folder during the 3–4 week processing period.
- Download as soon as the completion email arrives; the link lasts seven days.
- Keep the untouched archive and a readable extracted copy.
- Store a second copy on a separate USB drive or cloud account.
- Use strong passwords, multi-factor authentication, and encryption where available.
- For beta-site conversations, check the current site or app for migrated chats and save anything especially important in a readable form.
- Use Account Issues for login, locked-account, password-reset, verification-email, or export-delivery problems.
- Review Model Improvement settings separately if you want to control how new content is used.
