But the comparison is affected by an unusual £80.9 million payment from Sky Media included in the prior year, while Channel 5’s 2024 content spending rose to £216.6 million. The figures show lower reported profit alongside continued content investment; they do not establish that streaming investment caused the decline.
What the profit figures show
Deadline reported that Channel 5 Broadcasting Limited made £21 million in operating profit in 2024, compared with £112.4 million in 2023. The publication described the drop as 81%. These figures concern operating profit, not profit after tax or pre-tax profit. Deadline’s report attributes the 2023 comparison to a year that included a substantial payment from Sky Media.

Why the 2023 comparison is unusual
The 2023 figure included an £80.9 million payment from Sky Media following an advertising-sales underpayment, according to Deadline. That exceptional payment made the earlier operating-profit figure unusually high. It is therefore misleading to read the full year-on-year fall as a measure of deterioration in ordinary operations.

Operating profit is not pre-tax profit
City A.M. separately reported £30.6 million in pre-tax profit for 2024. Pre-tax profit and operating profit are different accounting measures, so the £30.6 million figure should not be compared directly with the £21 million operating-profit figure. City A.M.’s report describes the company as returning to profit despite advertising pressure.

How much did Channel 5 spend on content?
Channel 5’s reported content spending was £216.6 million in 2024. Deadline described this as a three-year high. The figure indicates that content investment continued during a year of lower reported operating profit, but it does not, by itself, show how much was spent specifically on streaming rather than programming for the broadcaster’s broader services.
What streaming has to do with the story
Streaming is part of Channel 5’s strategy for reaching viewers across platforms, but the available figures do not isolate streaming’s contribution to costs or profits. They also do not establish that streaming investment alone caused the 2024 operating-profit decline. Advertising pressure and the unusually high 2023 comparison are relevant context, not a complete audited breakdown of the change.

Paramount said that 5 was the fastest-growing UK public service broadcaster streaming service for the second consecutive year, referring to streaming growth in 2025. That is the company’s own description, not an independently verified ranking. Paramount’s UK media hub announcement gives the company’s account of that growth.
Which reporting period do these figures cover?
The profit and content-spending figures refer to the year ended 31 December 2024. Companies House records that Channel 5 Broadcasting Limited filed those accounts on 2 October 2025. As of 9 October 2026, the official registry record listed the 2024 accounts as the latest accounts, with 2025 accounts overdue. That means these figures should not be described as a current-year trading update. Check the Companies House filing history for filing status and the company overview for its registry record.

What can—and cannot—be concluded
- Reported operating profit fell: from £112.4 million in 2023 to £21 million in 2024, according to Deadline.
- The comparison includes an exceptional item: 2023 included an £80.9 million Sky Media payment after an advertising-sales underpayment.
- Content spending remained substantial: Deadline reported £216.6 million in 2024, a three-year high.
- Streaming growth is a separate claim: Paramount described 5’s 2025 streaming performance as the fastest growth among UK public service broadcaster services for a second consecutive year.
- The causal link is not established: the reported figures do not show that streaming spending caused the operating-profit decline or quantify streaming’s profit contribution.
These numbers are not enough to rank Channel 5 against other UK broadcasters. A meaningful comparison would require like-for-like accounting measures and periods, while separating recurring operations from the Sky Media payment and keeping audience-growth claims distinct from financial results.
