You can change Dropbox Backup’s schedule from the Dropbox desktop app: click the Dropbox icon in the Windows taskbar, open the account menu, choose Preferences, select Backups, then choose Set up or Manage backups. In the updated Backup experience, select 15 minutes (recommended), daily, weekly, or custom, and save the setting shown by the app.
What the Dropbox Backup frequency setting controls
The frequency setting controls how often Dropbox Backup processes changes from folders you selected for computer backup. It is a recovery-oriented copy: the purpose is to preserve a cloud copy that you can use if files are lost, damaged, or removed from the computer.

This setting is separate from ordinary Dropbox synchronization. Sync keeps files available and updated across Dropbox locations, while Backup creates a safety copy for recovery. Changing the Backup interval therefore does not turn normal Dropbox folder synchronization into a scheduled task, and it does not make every Dropbox feature wait for the next Backup run.
Dropbox says some backup activity can show changes instantly, while other changes are integrated every 15 minutes. Its updated Backup scheduler adds four choices: a 15-minute interval, daily, weekly, or a custom interval (Dropbox Help, “Dropbox Backup: an overview,” updated July 7, 2026).
#1 Best Overall
- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Before you change the schedule
- Use the full Dropbox desktop app. The documented Windows desktop app supports Windows 10 and Windows 11, but not Windows S mode.
- Make sure the app is running. The taskbar control and Backup preferences are provided by the desktop application, not by the Dropbox website alone.
- Sign in to the account that owns the Backup configuration. If several accounts or Windows users use the computer, check the account menu before changing anything.
- Allow Dropbox to finish starting. A partially loaded app may show the taskbar icon but not all preference tabs.
- Know whether you are configuring a computer or an external drive. Dropbox documents a separate update behavior for external-drive backups.
Dropbox states that Dropbox Backup is available to customers on all plans. Availability of the setting still depends on using the supported desktop application and an account in which Backup is enabled.
How to change Dropbox Backup frequency in Windows 11
- Start Dropbox. Open the Dropbox desktop application and wait until its tray or taskbar control is available. If Windows hides tray icons, open the hidden-icons area near the clock.
- Open the Dropbox account menu. Click the Dropbox icon in the Windows taskbar. In the panel that opens, select the round account control. Depending on your account and app version, it may show a profile photo, your initials, or a person icon.
- Open Preferences. Choose Preferences from the account menu. This opens Dropbox’s desktop settings window.
- Open Backups. Select the Backups tab. Do not use the general Sync tab if your goal is to alter Backup timing; sync settings govern a different function.
- Open the Backup configuration. Select Set up if Backup has not been configured on this computer. If it is already active, choose Manage backups. The exact label can vary with account state and app version.
- Choose an interval. In the updated Dropbox Backup experience, select 15 minutes (recommended), daily, weekly, or custom.
- Confirm the change. Use the save, apply, or confirmation control presented by the app. Leave the Preferences window only after Dropbox displays the selected schedule or otherwise confirms the update.
- Check the resulting status. Return to the Backups tab if necessary and verify that the computer backup remains enabled and the new interval is shown. Keep Dropbox running so it can process the next scheduled backup.
Which interval should you choose?
The documented choices represent a trade-off between how current the recovery copy is, how often Dropbox needs to process changes, and how much attention the schedule requires. Dropbox does not publish a measured performance ranking for these options; the practical differences below follow from the intervals themselves.
| Choice | Recovery-point freshness | Network and computer activity | When it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 15 minutes (recommended) | Usually leaves the shortest scheduled gap between a change and its Backup capture. | Runs more often, so changes can be processed more frequently. | Active workstations, frequently edited documents, or anyone who wants a recent recovery copy. |
| Daily | A change made after one run may not be represented until the next daily run. | Fewer scheduled runs than the 15-minute choice. | Files that change occasionally or computers where a once-a-day copy is sufficient. |
| Weekly | The potential gap is much longer; a week’s changes may exist only on the computer until the scheduled run. | Least frequent of the standard schedules. | Stable folders that change rarely and do not require a recent recovery point. |
| Custom | Depends on the interval or routine you configure in the app. | Can be matched to your working pattern instead of using a standard cadence. | Teams or individuals with a known schedule, such as a particular workday routine. |
Choose the shortest interval that suits your recovery needs and the amount of activity you are comfortable with. A 15-minute schedule reduces the time between many changes and their cloud backup, while daily or weekly schedules intentionally accept a longer gap in exchange for fewer scheduled runs. Custom is useful when neither a quarter-hour cadence nor a full-day or full-week cadence matches your workflow.

How the custom option works
Selecting custom opens the scheduling controls supplied by your current Dropbox app. The exact fields and labels can change as Dropbox updates the Backup experience, so follow the choices displayed on screen rather than relying on an older screenshot.

- Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Set a routine that reflects when the backed-up folders actually change. For example, a computer used every weekday may need a different cadence from a machine that is powered on only for occasional projects. If the app asks you to specify days, times, or an interval, complete every required field and then use the confirmation control. After saving, return to Preferences > Backups and verify that Dropbox displays the custom schedule.
Custom scheduling does not guarantee that a computer will back up while it is shut down or disconnected. Dropbox must be able to run and access the selected folders. If a scheduled time passes while the app is unavailable, check the Backups status after reconnecting rather than assuming the missed run was completed.
Computer Backup versus external-drive Backup
Do not apply the computer schedule mechanically to an external drive. Dropbox separately states that, once an external drive is connected, its Backup updates automatically every hour while the drive remains plugged in (Dropbox Help, “Dropbox Backup: an overview,” updated July 7, 2026).
That hourly behavior is a documented rule for the connected external-drive case, not one of the four computer schedule choices. A drive that is unplugged cannot be updated during the time it is disconnected. Reconnect it, keep Dropbox running, and inspect the Backups status if you need to confirm that the drive is included.
Rank #3
- Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
What to do if the Dropbox icon is missing
- Open the Windows Start menu and launch the Dropbox desktop app.
- Wait for Dropbox to finish loading and look in the taskbar notification area. Windows 11 may place the icon inside the hidden-icons panel.
- If the app is not installed, install the full Dropbox desktop application that supports Windows 11. Windows S mode is excluded from Dropbox’s stated desktop-app support.
- If Dropbox opens but no taskbar control appears, restart the app and check the notification-area overflow again.
- Once the icon is visible, continue with the account menu and Preferences path.
A web browser session by itself does not provide the same desktop Backup controls. The frequency workflow is performed in Dropbox Preferences.
If you cannot find the Backups tab
- Confirm the window is Dropbox Preferences. The website’s account settings and the desktop app’s Preferences are different interfaces.
- Check that you are signed in. The account menu may show a person icon, initials, or a profile image; open it to verify the active account.
- Wait for the app to finish updating its interface. Close and reopen Preferences after Dropbox has fully started.
- Look for account-specific wording. Dropbox says labels can vary slightly by account and app version. The control may be named Set up or Manage backups.
- Check the operating mode. Dropbox documents the full desktop app for Windows 10 and 11 except Windows S mode.
Dropbox says Backup is available on all plans, so a missing tab is not, by itself, evidence that you need a different subscription. Focus first on the app, account, and Windows-mode checks.
If Set up appears instead of Manage backups
Set up indicates that Dropbox is treating Backup as not yet configured for the current computer or account. Select it and follow the displayed setup flow to choose the folders to protect. When the scheduler appears, select the desired interval and confirm it.
Recommended Free Tools
Manage backups appears when Dropbox already has a Backup configuration to edit. Use it to change the schedule without assuming that the existing folder selection has changed. Review the folders shown by Dropbox before saving if the app presents that information in the same flow.
Rank #4
- Easily store and access 4TB of content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
If your new schedule does not appear to run
- Check the selected interval. Reopen Preferences > Backups and verify that the intended option is displayed, rather than assuming the click was saved.
- Keep the desktop app running. Scheduled processing requires Dropbox to be available on the computer.
- Check connectivity. Dropbox needs a working connection to update the cloud copy. A local file change can exist on the computer before it is reflected in Backup.
- Check the source folder. Make a small, harmless change inside a folder that is actually included in Backup, not in an unrelated location.
- Allow for the interval. A daily or weekly schedule is not expected to update immediately after every edit. A custom schedule follows the routine you set.
- Inspect the Backups status. Return to the Backups tab for any warning, paused state, or request to complete setup.
Do not infer a failure simply because a change is not visible immediately. Dropbox describes different Backup behavior for different changes, including immediate display in some cases and 15-minute integration in others. The selected schedule determines the cadence offered by the updated scheduler.
How Backup frequency differs from normal Dropbox sync
| Feature | Primary purpose | What changing the Backup frequency does |
|---|---|---|
| Dropbox Backup | Maintains a safety copy of selected computer or external-drive files for recovery. | Changes when scheduled Backup processing occurs for the selected source. |
| Dropbox sync | Keeps files available and updated across Dropbox locations. | Is not converted into a daily or weekly schedule by the Backup setting. |
This distinction matters when diagnosing a missing file. A file may be synchronized through ordinary Dropbox behavior even though its Backup schedule is daily, or it may be awaiting the next Backup run because it belongs to a protected computer folder. Use the Backups tab to inspect Backup and the sync controls for synchronization.

Frequently edited work documents
Choose the 15-minute option when losing more than a short period of edits would be costly. It is Dropbox’s recommended interval in the updated scheduler and provides the freshest standard scheduled recovery point.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Occasional household or personal files
Daily can be a reasonable balance when files change only once or twice a day and you do not need every short editing session represented in the cloud copy. Remember that edits made after the daily run may wait until the next one.
Best Value
- Plug-and-play expandability
- SuperSpeed USB 3.2 Gen 1 (5Gbps)
Archive-like folders
Weekly may fit folders that rarely change and are not used as the only copy of current work. It creates the longest standard gap, so it is unsuitable when a recent recovery point is important.
Predictable work routines
Use custom when your activity follows a repeatable pattern that the standard choices do not describe. Set the displayed days, times, or interval carefully, then verify the saved schedule in Preferences.
Labels and screens can vary
Dropbox’s current instructions show that the account control may display a profile photo, initials, or a person icon. The Backup action may say Set up or Manage backups. These variations do not necessarily indicate a different feature; they can reflect whether Backup has been configured and which app version or account interface you have.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesUse the meaning of the path—Dropbox taskbar icon, account menu, Preferences, Backups—rather than searching for an exact icon shape. If a label is slightly different, select the control that opens the computer Backup configuration and look for the interval choices.
Requirements and availability at a glance
| Requirement or fact | Documented detail |
|---|---|
| Supported Windows editions | Dropbox documents the full desktop app for Windows 10 and Windows 11, except Windows S mode. |
| Plan availability | Dropbox says Dropbox Backup is available to customers on all plans. |
| Computer schedule choices | 15 minutes (recommended), daily, weekly, and custom in the updated Backup experience. |
| External-drive behavior | Updates automatically every hour while the external drive remains connected, according to Dropbox Help. |
| Where to change it | Dropbox taskbar icon > account menu > Preferences > Backups > Set up or Manage backups. |
Verify the change without waiting for a full schedule
Immediately after saving, reopen the Backups tab and confirm that the selected interval is shown. This checks that the setting was accepted, but it does not force an instant Backup run when you selected daily, weekly, or a custom time in the future.
For a basic operational check, confirm that the folders you intended to protect are still listed, Dropbox remains signed in, and the desktop app is running. If you use an external drive, leave it connected while checking its status because Dropbox documents its hourly updates only while the drive is plugged in.
Key limitations to keep in mind
- The schedule applies to Dropbox Backup, not ordinary Dropbox synchronization.
- A scheduled interval cannot update files while the source computer or external drive is unavailable.
- External-drive Backup follows a separately documented hourly update behavior while connected.
- Windows S mode is not included in Dropbox’s stated full desktop-app support.
- Interface labels and account-menu icons can differ slightly by app version and account state.
- Daily and weekly choices intentionally leave a longer possible gap between a local edit and its Backup capture than the 15-minute choice.
Sources and current wording
Dropbox Help describes the interval choices and external-drive behavior in “Dropbox Backup: an overview,” updated July 7, 2026. Its “How to use Dropbox Backup” article, updated September 11, 2026, describes Dropbox Backup as a way to automatically back up files and folders from a computer and external drives. Dropbox’s desktop-app guidance covers Windows 10 and 11 except Windows S mode. Because Dropbox can adjust labels and layouts, use the controls currently shown in your installed app while following the documented path.
