Researchers studying impact-glass particles in soil returned by China’s Chang’e-6 mission identified face-centered cubic γ-Fe (gamma iron), a phase not previously reported in natural lunar samples. Some of the particles showed a stable magnetic pattern that could preserve information about past conditions—but the finding is a promising possibility, not yet a reconstruction of the Moon’s magnetic history.
What is the magnetic “time capsule”?
It is a proposed role for γ-Fe, or gamma iron, found as nanoscale particles embedded in lunar impact glass. The Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) describes the discovery as the first identification of this iron phase in natural lunar samples. The team examined two impact-glass samples, so the result does not show that γ-Fe is present throughout Chang’e-6 soil or across the Moon. (CAS report, September 24, 2026)
The “time capsule” label refers to the particles’ potential to preserve magnetic information. It does not mean scientists have already read a complete record of the Moon’s ancient magnetic field from them.
How did researchers identify and study the particles?
The study, led by Prof. Du Haifeng of the High Magnetic Field Laboratory at the Hefei Institutes of Physical Science, CAS, was published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences on September 16, 2026, according to CAS. Researchers prepared material using a focused ion beam, examined it with transmission electron microscopy and chemical analysis, and used off-axis electron holography to investigate the magnetic structure of individual γ-Fe nanoparticles. The institutional report says γ-Fe was the dominant iron phase in the two impact-glass samples studied. (CAS report)

What makes γ-Fe magnetically interesting?
In relatively large γ-Fe particles, electron holography revealed a stable single-vortex magnetic state. The particles also maintained a stable response under an applied external magnetic field. Those laboratory observations are why the researchers propose that γ-Fe might act as a magnetic recorder.
That interpretation remains open to testing. CAS says γ-Fe and α-Fe form under different conditions and have different magnetic properties, potentially preserving evidence from different stages of lunar impacts. The report does not establish precise recording windows or show that the γ-Fe particles record the Moon’s global dynamo.

How could an unusual iron phase survive in lunar glass?
γ-Fe is normally stable at high temperatures and transforms into α-Fe as it cools. The researchers propose that trace carbon and other elements, rapid cooling of impact-generated melts, and the surrounding glass matrix may have helped preserve γ-Fe. This is a suggested explanation, rather than a confirmed account of the preservation mechanism. More work is needed to determine how much the phase can contribute to understanding ancient lunar magnetism. (CAS report)
How does this finding compare with other Chang’e-6 magnetism results?
Other studies of Chang’e-6 material examine different samples and answer different questions. Their measurements should not be treated as results from the γ-Fe impact-glass study.

The earlier soil study’s iron populations also illustrate why sample context matters: it identified nickel-poor iron particles in basalt clasts as magmatic in origin, while nickel-rich metallic iron and Fe-Ni alloys in breccias, agglutinates, and glassy material were interpreted as impact-related. These are findings about mineral populations in bulk soil, not evidence that all such material contains γ-Fe. (Nature Communications)

The result adds a possible new tool for investigating magnetic information preserved in lunar material. It does not establish how much γ-Fe occurs beyond the two impact-glass samples, quantify the phase’s contribution to a field reconstruction, or provide a γ-Fe-derived estimate of ancient field strength. The CAS report gives no particle count or numerical magnetic moment. Those limits matter because rocks and soil can retain traces of ancient magnetism even though the Moon no longer has a global magnetic field. (CAS report)

Dr. Li Long of HFIPS, identified by CAS as a member of the research team, called it “This tiny magnetic fossil may help us better understand the Moon’s ancient magnetic history.” The word “may” captures the status of the finding: the magnetic behavior is observed, while its value as a record of lunar history remains to be established.
