The radio source nicknamed the Treble Clef is not a single black-hole jet making a musical symbol. NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory and the eROSITA mission indicate that it is fossil radio plasma from an earlier supermassive-black-hole outburst that was later compressed or reenergized when two galaxy clusters collided. The result is a bright, filamentary source called VLSS J0318.9+5755.

What the Treble Clef is

VLSS J0318.9+5755 is a bright, low-frequency radio source whose branching filaments resemble the three-pronged musical symbol. Astronomers use “Treble Clef” as a visual nickname, not as a physical or musical classification. The resemblance is an example of pareidolia: the human tendency to recognize familiar shapes in irregular data. The same structure can also look like a dragon viewed from the side.

The source is in the constellation Camelopardalis at right ascension 03h 18m 57.8s and declination +57° 54′ 59.2″. NASA’s Chandra X-ray Center places it about 1.55 billion light-years from Earth, with a redshift of 0.117. It lies almost directly behind the plane of the Milky Way, in the region astronomers call the Zone of Avoidance. Foreground stars, gas and dust make ordinary optical observations especially difficult there, so radio, X-ray and infrared data are essential.

How the structure formed

The leading explanation is a two-stage history. Researchers describe it as a candidate “radio phoenix”: old radio-emitting plasma that becomes visible again after a later disturbance.

1. A supermassive black-hole outburst supplied the plasma

At an earlier time, a supermassive black hole in the cluster environment appears to have released an outburst. Jets or an explosive episode would have driven charged particles and magnetic fields outward at close to the speed of light. Those particles initially produced strong synchrotron radio emission.

2. The emission faded as the particles aged

As the electrons lost energy, the original radio source dimmed. The particles and magnetic fields did not necessarily disappear; instead, they left behind a low-energy, “fossil” plasma difficult to detect at higher radio frequencies.

3. A cluster merger revived the fossil plasma

Later, two galaxy clusters began merging. Their intracluster gas and associated shock waves could have compressed the fossil plasma or reenergized its electrons, making the old material bright again at low radio frequencies. The merger therefore appears to be a second event that illuminated the relic plasma rather than the original cause of the filaments.

This sequence remains a best-fit interpretation. The release uses “likely” and “may have” because astronomers are reconstructing events that occurred hundreds of millions of years ago, not watching the black-hole outburst and collision happen in real time.

How Chandra revealed the collision

Galaxy clusters contain gas heated to millions of degrees. That diffuse intracluster gas shines in X-rays, allowing an X-ray observatory to trace the otherwise invisible cluster environment. Chandra and eROSITA both detected this hot gas around the Treble Clef.

To test whether the system was disturbed, the team modeled the X-ray emission as an approximately oval, symmetric component and subtracted that model from the Chandra image. The remaining, or residual, emission is not evenly distributed: it is brighter to the left and right of the apparent cluster center and fainter between those sides.

That residual pattern is consistent with a collision oriented along the left-to-right direction in the image. The researchers estimate that the direct encounter occurred a few hundred million years ago and that the two clusters are now moving apart. The X-ray morphology provides the evidence for the merger; the radio filaments show what the merger did to the older plasma.

Scale, position and Chandra observations

Property Reported value Qualification
Distance About 1.55 billion light-years NASA Chandra X-ray Center release estimate for the 2026 announcement.
Redshift 0.117 Value associated with the host cluster in the release and study record.
Displayed image span About 6 million light-years Physical scale across the published field, not the diameter of one galaxy.
Chandra exposure Four observations totaling 13 hours 34 minutes ACIS observations made in April 2026.
Sky position RA 03h 18m 57.8s; Dec +57° 54′ 59.2″ Constellation Camelopardalis, behind the Milky Way plane.

The six-million-light-year span gives a sense of the merger’s environment: the image covers a region vastly larger than an individual galaxy and includes the surrounding intracluster medium in which the radio plasma evolves.

Why the radio spectrum matters

The study, “The Treble Clef radio phoenix and its old nonthermal filaments,” combines the X-ray data with spatially resolved low-frequency radio observations. Led by Andrea Botteon and 17 other authors, it reports a spectral index reaching alpha greater than 4 between 400 and 650 MHz. Such an extremely steep spectrum means the emission falls rapidly as frequency increases, a signature expected when a population of synchrotron-emitting electrons has aged and then been disturbed.

That measurement supports the radio-phoenix interpretation: the filaments are not simply a newly powered, compact jet. Their low-frequency brightness and filamentary shape are consistent with old nonthermal plasma spread through a merging cluster and revived by compression or shocks.

What is established—and what is not

  • Established by the observations: diffuse hot X-ray gas surrounds the source; the X-ray residuals are brighter on opposite sides of the center; LOFAR detects extended, very steep-spectrum radio filaments; and the system is associated with a massive, merging cluster in the Zone of Avoidance.
  • Best-fit history: an earlier supermassive-black-hole outburst created the plasma, followed later by cluster-merger compression or reenergization.
  • Still uncertain: whether merger shocks, adiabatic compression, turbulence or a combination supplied most of the reenergization, and the exact timing and geometry of the original outburst.
  • Not a physical claim: the treble-clef appearance has no connection to musical notation; it is a descriptive nickname for a pattern in the radio image.

The underlying arXiv record was submitted on 7 July 2026 and revised to version 2 on 5 October 2026. Its analysis characterizes the host cluster’s redshift, mass, temperature, X-ray luminosity and dynamical state, then combines those results with the radio spectrum to classify VLSS J0318.9+5755 as a radio phoenix in a massive, merging cluster.
