The name is commonly used for different Windows software associated with CH341A hardware: WCH’s CH341SER.EXE USB-to-serial driver, the CH341PAR driver package for SPI/I2C/EPP/MEM programmer mode, and third-party applications that read and write EEPROM or BIOS flash chips. Choose the package according to how you are using the device, and match the programmer, clip, chip package and voltage before connecting anything.
What “CH341A.exe” actually refers to
CH341A is a WCH (Nanjing Qinheng Microelectronics) USB interface chip used in several kinds of hardware. A small board sold as a “CH341A programmer” can work as a USB-to-UART adapter or as a low-cost programmer for SPI, I2C, MicroWire and related memory devices. Windows software for those jobs is distributed under different names.

There is no single canonical WCH download identified as a file literally named CH341A.exe. A search result with that filename may be a renamed installer, a third-party programmer application or an unrelated executable. The safe way to proceed is to identify the hardware mode first and then obtain the matching WCH package or a known application.

| Use case | Correct WCH package | What it provides | Typical task |
|---|---|---|---|
| USB-to-UART/serial adapter | CH341SER.EXE |
Windows VCP (virtual COM-port) driver | Communicating with a serial console or microcontroller |
| SPI, I2C, EPP or MEM programmer | CH341PAR.EXE or CH341PAR.ZIP |
Windows driver and DLL layer for the programmer interface | Reading, erasing, writing and verifying EEPROM or BIOS flash |
Third-party programs sit above the driver. Commonly documented choices include ASProgrammer, NeoProgrammer, SiberiaProg and CH341A Programmer. The open-source IMSProg project supports I2C, SPI and MicroWire EEPROM/flash with CH341A, CH347T and FT232H hardware. Flashrom-based workflows are another option when the target chip and adapter are supported.

When you need the serial driver
Use CH341SER.EXE when your board is being used as a USB-to-serial converter. WCH describes it as a “USB to serial port Windows one-key installation VCP vendor driver for Windows.” The package supports CH340 and CH341 devices, including CH341A, and the vendor page reports Microsoft WHQL/HCK certification. The same page lists file version 4.0, a 780 KB file size and an update date of June 24, 2026.
After installation, Windows should expose a COM port. Serial-terminal software and firmware tools then use that COM-port number; they do not use the SPI programmer application.

- CH341A Programmer: The main purpose is to backup, erase, programming, calibration and other operations of various software
- Compatible with most 24 / 25 series SOP8 SOP16 chip
- Chip 100% compatible: CH341A and CH341B
- No welding is required, you can directly clamp it with a test clip
- Please confirm the chip voltage to avoid burning the chip.(This product only supports 3.3v 5V switching)
When you need programmer mode
Use the CH341PAR package when the board is connected to an EEPROM or SPI flash chip. This is the driver/DLL layer for USB-to-SPI, I2C, EPP and MEM interfaces. A programmer application such as ASProgrammer or IMSProg uses that layer to send commands to the memory device.
Installing the serial package alone does not turn a programmer application into an SPI programmer. Conversely, installing the parallel package does not create a normal COM port for UART work.

Check what Windows sees
- Connect the CH341A board without attaching it to a target chip.
- Open Device Manager by right-clicking Start and selecting Device Manager.
- Expand Ports (COM & LPT) and Universal Serial Bus controllers. A COM-port entry indicates serial-driver use; a USB device entry without a COM port is more consistent with programmer mode.
- Right-click the device, choose Properties, and inspect the Details tab. Select Hardware Ids to confirm that the connected hardware is the CH34x/CH341 family before choosing software.
CH341A programmer software for Windows 10/11
Install the WCH driver first
- Download the appropriate package from WCH’s official driver page rather than an executable mirror with an unexplained name.
- For serial use, run
CH341SER.EXEand follow the installer prompts. For programmer use, extractCH341PAR.ZIPor run the suppliedCH341PAR.EXEinstaller, depending on the package version. - Disconnect and reconnect the board when the installer requests it.
- Return to Device Manager and confirm that the device no longer has a yellow warning icon. If the package creates a COM port, record its number.
- Install one programmer application and select the CH341A interface inside that application. Do not run several tools against the board at the same time.
WCH’s current English driver page lists CH341A support for Windows 11, 10, 8.1, 8, 7, Vista and XP, along with older Windows Server editions. Compatibility of a particular third-party application can be narrower, so check that application’s own release notes and device list.
Select the chip in the application
Programmer applications usually require an exact manufacturer and part number, not merely “SPI flash.” Select the closest-looking entry only when the datasheet confirms that the command set, capacity and voltage match. A wrong selection can produce an apparently successful operation that leaves the chip unusable.

IMSProg is useful when you prefer an open-source interface and your device is among its supported I2C, SPI or MicroWire parts. ASProgrammer, NeoProgrammer, SiberiaProg and CH341A Programmer are separate application choices; the WCH driver remains the hardware communication layer.
CH341A BIOS chip programmer: hardware and voltage checks
The physical programmer is not the same thing as CH341A.exe. A typical board is intended to back up, erase, program and verify compatible memory, often 24-series EEPROMs and 25-series SPI BIOS chips in SOP8/SOIC8 or SOP16 packages. A manual for a CH341A programmer describes those backup, erase, program and calibration functions and lists support for most 24/25-series EEPROM BIOS SOP8/SOP16 chips.
Best Value
- 1.The SOP8 clip enables in-circuit programming of for EEPROM without disassembling the chip, making flashing the BIOS simpler and more efficient.
- 2.The main purpose of the CH341A Programmer is to back up, erase, program, calibrate and other actions on various software.
- 3.SOIC8 SOP8 Test Clip For EEPROM 24CXX / 25CXX / 93CXX in-circuit programming
- 4.The CH341A Programmer support most 24 / 25 Series for EEPROM BIOS SOP8 SOP16 chip on the market. Note: Due to the characteristics of the CH341A chip, the ESMT SST class 25 chip can only be read and cannot be written.
- 5.5.Tips: Some chips are affected by peripheral circuits and cannot be clipped directly. Please check the chip location on the motherboard before purchasing!
- Match the package. An SOP8/SOIC8 clip must fit the chip body and pin-1 orientation. An SOP16 target needs a compatible SOP16 connection or an adapter.
- Confirm the voltage. Many CH341A boards operate at 3.3 V, while some flash chips require 1.8 V. Use a suitable 1.8 V voltage adapter for a 1.8 V target; do not assume a 3.3 V board is safe for every chip.
- Check the datasheet. Verify operating voltage, capacity, pinout, write-protection behavior and whether in-circuit programming is supported.
- Power down the target. Remove the computer’s AC power and battery where appropriate before attaching a clip. Other circuitry can back-power the board or interfere with identification.
- Orient pin 1 correctly. Align the clip’s marked wire or stripe with the chip’s pin-1 mark. Reversed connections can damage the chip, programmer or motherboard.
- Use a stable cable and connection. A loose SOP clip, poor USB cable or unpowered hub can interrupt a read or write.
For a first project, a CH341A USB EEPROM/BIOS programmer kit that includes an SOP8/SOIC8 clip is more practical than buying the board alone. Add a verified 1.8 V adapter when the target’s datasheet requires it; clips, ZIF adapters and replacement USB cables are separate accessories.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A safe read, backup and write workflow
- Record the original state. Photograph the chip and clip orientation, and note the exact part number printed on the package.
- Attach only after power is removed. Connect the clip to the chip and the programmer to USB. Keep the clip steady while the application communicates.
- Identify the chip. Use the application’s Read ID, Detect or equivalent command. If identification fails, stop and troubleshoot the connection instead of forcing a different part number.
- Read the entire device. Save the dump with a descriptive filename that includes the chip part number and date.
- Read it again. Make a second dump and compare the files. Matching reads provide a practical check that the clip and voltage are stable.
- Erase only when necessary. Use the application’s erase command and wait for its completion status. Do not disconnect USB or move the clip during the operation.
- Load the replacement image. Confirm that the file size equals the chip capacity and that the image is intended for the exact board or device.
- Write the chip. Start programming and leave the setup untouched until the application reports completion.
- Verify. Run the application’s verify command, or perform a fresh read and compare it with the image you wrote.
- Restore the hardware. Disconnect USB, remove the clip, reinstall the chip or reconnect the board, and test the repaired equipment.
Keep multiple untouched copies of the original dump. A backup is valuable only if it can be recovered after a failed write, so store it on another drive as well as on the computer used for programming.
CH341A EEPROM programmer not detecting chip
Device is absent from Windows
- Try another USB port and a known-good data cable; avoid an unpowered hub.
- Reinstall the correct WCH package and reconnect the board.
- In Device Manager, remove the problem device, restart Windows and let the driver installer run again.
- Check whether another application has opened the device. Close serial terminals and programmer tools before retrying.
Windows detects the board, but the application cannot open it
- Confirm that you installed
CH341PARfor SPI/I2C programming rather than onlyCH341SER.EXE. - Choose the CH341A interface in the application’s hardware or interface settings.
- Run the application with the permissions it documents, then reconnect the programmer.
- Use a release of the application that lists your Windows edition and the chip family you selected.
The chip is detected with the wrong ID or reads all FF/00
- Remove power from the target and reseat the clip, checking pin 1 and every contact.
- Verify 3.3 V versus 1.8 V requirements and install the proper adapter for a 1.8 V device.
- Check whether the motherboard or circuit is still driving the chip. In-circuit connections may require isolating the chip or removing it for socket programming.
- Compare the selected part number, capacity and manufacturer with the marking on the chip and its datasheet.
- Try a second read. If two reads differ, do not erase or write; fix the electrical connection first.
Writing fails or verification does not match
- Restore the original dump if possible and make a new backup before another attempt.
- Check that the image is the exact chip size and that write protection is disabled where the datasheet requires it.
- Shorten the USB path, replace a suspect cable and keep the clip motionless.
- Do not interrupt power during erase or write. A partial image can prevent the target system from starting.
Security checks for a file called CH341A.exe
Treat an unexplained executable as untrusted until its source and purpose are clear. Prefer WCH’s driver packages for the driver layer and the documented release page of the chosen programmer application for the application layer. Check the downloaded archive’s name, publisher information and digital signature when Windows displays them, and scan the file with your normal security software before running it.
Recommended Free Tools
A file named CH341A.exe is not proof that it is an official WCH package. Avoid installers that bundle unrelated programs, demand unusual permissions or provide no hardware documentation. Keep a copy of the original firmware dump before experimenting with any third-party tool.
