Samsung Ballie is a rolling AI home-companion concept, not a robot vacuum or humanoid butler. In Samsung’s CES 2024 video, the ball-shaped device moves through a house, follows people, projects video and information onto floors or walls, controls connected appliances, answers calls, and sends video updates about pets or family. Samsung later announced a planned consumer launch with Google Gemini, but Ballie was not a normal retail product as of August 18, 2026.
What the CES 2024 Ballie video shows
Samsung introduced the redesigned Ballie at its CES 2024 press conference in Las Vegas on January 8, 2024, describing it as an AI home companion. The company had first shown Ballie at CES 2020. The official presentation and accompanying film show a scripted vision of how a mobile assistant might fit into daily life, rather than a specification sheet or independently tested retail device.
You can watch Samsung’s official video in its newsroom article or on YouTube.
Moving between rooms
Samsung’s video depicts Ballie driving autonomously around a home and responding when residents return. The CES Innovation Awards description says it can follow users. That makes mobility central to the concept: instead of waiting in one place like a smart speaker or display, Ballie is intended to bring its camera, microphones, assistant and projector to the room where they are needed.

Projecting workouts, schedules and entertainment
Ballie projects workout videos and other information onto a wall or floor, plays music and presents schedules, events and weather. The CES listing describes a movable robotic projector with two projectors that can detect a suitable surface and adjust the image. It also describes projected controls that could support touch-like actions such as pausing video, zooming an image or pressing an on-screen control.
Those are Samsung and CES descriptions of the demonstrated concept. They do not establish image quality, brightness, latency or reliable interaction on every wall, floor, lighting condition or viewing angle.
Monitoring people and pets while you are away
The film shows Ballie checking on pets or family members and sending video updates to the user’s device. This is proposed remote awareness, not proof that Ballie is a certified security system or a replacement for alarms and dedicated cameras.
Controlling connected appliances and handling calls
Samsung says Ballie can connect to and manage home appliances. The scenarios include controlling devices, answering phone calls and acting as a conversational household companion. The CES Innovation Awards entry specifically mentions IoT controls such as lights and air conditioning.

Ballie versus a robot vacuum
| Ballie’s proposed role | Robot vacuum’s established role |
|---|---|
| Move around rooms to provide conversation, projection, camera-based awareness and appliance control. | Map floors and perform cleaning, often returning to a charging dock. |
| Bring a mobile screen and assistant to different parts of the home. | Prioritize brushes, suction, navigation and floor coverage. |
| Could send contextual updates about a pet or household activity. | Is not designed as a conversational monitor or projector. |
Ballie was not shown cleaning, cooking, carrying objects, doing laundry or performing other physical chores. Its value proposition is mobility plus interaction, closer to a rolling smart-home terminal than a household appliance.

How the demonstrated hardware appears to work
Ballie has a spherical rolling body with cameras and environmental sensors. Contemporary hands-on reporting from TechCrunch identified spatial LiDAR for navigation and a 1080p projector with two lenses: TechCrunch’s CES 2024 report. Samsung’s own CES material did not publish a complete technical specification sheet.
Accordingly, there is no confirmed public figure here for battery capacity, runtime, processor, dimensions, weight, final sensor complement or production-model projector performance. CES demonstration hardware can change substantially before a commercial release.
Was Ballie really autonomous?
Samsung portrayed Ballie as autonomously driving through the home, learning household patterns and habits, and adapting assistance to users. The CES entry also describes following users. That supports a claim that autonomous navigation was part of the demonstration and design goal.

- How it handles stairs, thresholds, loose cables, clutter and furniture rearrangements.
- Whether it can avoid pets, children and unexpected obstacles in low light.
- How it behaves with multiple occupants or a poor Wi-Fi connection.
- How long it can operate before charging and what happens when it loses network access.
Nothing in the CES material shows Ballie independently carrying out complex physical work.

What Samsung added with Google Gemini in 2025
On April 9, 2025, Samsung and Google Cloud announced that Gemini would be integrated into Ballie. Samsung said Gemini’s multimodal capabilities would work alongside Samsung language models and Ballie’s audio, camera and environmental-sensor inputs. The announcement is documented in Samsung’s U.S. newsroom and its global announcement.
Samsung proposed natural conversation, visual and audio understanding, proactive assistance, personalized schedules and reminders, lighting adjustments, greeting people at the door, and suggestions related to home, health and well-being. These were announced intended functions for the later Ballie program; Gemini was not identified as part of the original CES 2024 video.

Not as a confirmed ordinary retail product as of August 18, 2026. The public timeline is:
| Date | What Samsung or later reporting said |
|---|---|
| January 8–9, 2024 | Samsung showed the redesigned Ballie ahead of CES 2024. |
| April 9, 2025 | Samsung and Google Cloud announced Gemini integration and said Ballie would be available in the United States and South Korea during summer 2025. No price was given. |
| January 2026 | Later reporting said the launch had not happened and described the project as shelved or indefinitely postponed. |
| August 18, 2026 | No verified Samsung purchase page, final price or completed retail launch appeared in the available evidence. |
A Samsung Community post reported that Ballie had been postponed and repositioned internally as an “active innovation platform”; the post is not a formal standalone cancellation notice. Ars Technica also reported the stalled release: Ars Technica. Samsung’s Korean project page remains at samsung.com/sec/projectors/home-robot-ballie/, but that page is not proof of U.S. retail availability.

Privacy and household consent
A roaming device with cameras, microphones, environmental sensors and cloud-connected AI raises more privacy questions than a stationary speaker. Household members, children, guests and service workers may be recorded or addressed without having configured the device. Samsung did not publish, in the cited CES material, complete retention, processing, access-control or subscription terms.

Navigation and safety
A tidy promotional home does not demonstrate safe navigation through cables, toys, pets, stairs or changing furniture. Do not assume Ballie can climb stairs, supervise children or animals, or replace a monitored security system.

Projection constraints
Projection depends on distance, surface color and texture, ambient light, viewing angle and obstructions. Adaptive surface detection may improve setup, but Samsung did not promise unlimited projection quality everywhere.
Ecosystem and connectivity dependence
Appliance control would depend on compatible SmartThings devices, account setup, regional support and a functioning network. Cloud-based AI features could degrade or stop during an outage. Samsung’s mention of health and wellness assistance should not be interpreted as medical diagnosis or professional care.
Who would have wanted Ballie?
- Smart-home enthusiasts: especially households already using Samsung or SmartThings-compatible appliances.
- Mobile-projection users: people who value workouts, calls or media in multiple rooms and accept the compromises of a moving projector.
- Remote-monitoring users: people interested in proposed pet or household video updates, while recognizing that a dedicated camera may be more suitable.
- Early adopters: buyers comfortable with uncertain hardware, software support, pricing and availability.
Practical alternatives for the functions Ballie promised
| If you want… | A more established option | What you give up |
|---|---|---|
| Floor cleaning and mapping | Samsung robot vacuums | No conversational companion, projector or roaming camera. |
| Appliance automation | Samsung SmartThings and compatible devices | No mobile body or room-to-room projection. |
| Schedules, calls and media | A fixed smart display, tablet or conventional projector | It will not follow you between rooms by itself. |
| Pet or family monitoring | A dedicated indoor camera | No proposed movement, projection or conversational features. |
Bottom line on Samsung Ballie
Ballie was a real Samsung prototype and a compelling CES 2024 vision: a mobile interface for smart-home control, projection, calls and remote awareness. The video demonstrates what Samsung wanted the experience to feel like, not a validated list of retail capabilities. Samsung announced a U.S. and South Korean launch plan for summer 2025, but no confirmed normal retail release, price or purchase path existed by August 18, 2026.
