CERN and Mistral announced a statement of intent on 15 October 2026 to develop a foundation model for collider physics. The proposed Large Physics Model would learn from billions of simulated proton-proton collisions linked to the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), but it is not yet a production system or public AI service.
What CERN and Mistral are building
The partnership centres on a single pretrained Large Physics Model, which CERN describes as an ambition to create the first foundation model for collider physics. Unlike a model designed for one narrowly defined analysis, it is intended to support several stages of particle-physics work from a shared set of learned representations.

The announcement is a long-term plan, not a launch. There is no evidence in the announcement that a finished model, downloadable weights, hosted chatbot or production analysis service is available now.
Why the LHC is a difficult AI problem
LHC detectors record extremely complex interactions when proton beams collide. Physicists currently use chains of specialised algorithms to turn raw detector signals into reconstructed particles and other analysis objects. Each stage is tuned to a particular task, and the output of one stage becomes input to the next.

CERN’s proposed approach is to train one large model across more of that reconstruction chain. The model is planned to learn from billions of simulated proton-proton collisions associated with the LHC. Simulation is essential because it supplies labelled examples of detector behaviour and underlying physics at a scale that would be difficult to obtain from real collisions alone.

The model could help infer particles and analysis objects from detector signals, potentially linking tasks that are now handled by separate algorithms.

Particle identification
It is intended to distinguish particle types and characteristics within collision events, a prerequisite for many measurements and searches.
Unexpected-signal detection
Another target is flagging collision patterns that do not fit established expectations. This would support searches for new phenomena, although the announcement provides no detection-rate, accuracy or uncertainty benchmark.

Detector-design evaluation
CERN also lists evaluating future detector designs. A model that can process simulated events could help researchers study how proposed hardware choices affect reconstruction and physics reach before construction.
When could it be available?
CERN’s Lighthouse Initiative describes first models in 2029, followed by continued maturation beyond 2030. Its wider AI programme is phased as follows:

These are programme milestones rather than a guaranteed public release date. “First models in 2029” does not establish that a general-purpose model, model weights or an experiment-ready service will be downloadable that year.
Is the CERN–Mistral model open source?
That has not been announced. The cited CERN material does not specify a licence, whether model weights will be published, how training data can be accessed, or whether an API will be offered. It also does not state the compute budget, benchmark suite or commercial terms.
CERN’s strategy calls for AI that is trusted and transparent, scientifically reliable, explainable where required, open and collaborative, and sustainable by design. Those principles describe the intended governance direction; they are not an open-source licence or a promise of unrestricted public access.
What the partnership could change for particle physics
A successful shared model could reduce duplication between reconstruction, identification and search workflows. Researchers might adapt one pretrained system to multiple experiments or analyses instead of building every component independently. A common model could also make it easier to compare results across parts of the reconstruction pipeline, provided its uncertainty estimates and failure modes are well understood.
There are important scientific constraints. A model trained on simulated collisions must be checked against real detector data, because simulation can differ from hardware behaviour. Rare or unexpected signals are especially sensitive to biases in the training distribution. For that reason, performance claims will need to include calibration, uncertainty handling, robustness to changing detector conditions and tests on data withheld from training.

What remains unknown
- The model’s architecture, parameter count and training compute
- The exact simulation datasets, their provenance and access rules
- Benchmark tasks, baseline algorithms and target performance
- Whether the system will be released as weights, an API, experiment-only infrastructure or a combination
- Licensing, commercial participation and governance for outside users
- The hardware and software interfaces needed to integrate it with LHC experiments
Until CERN or Mistral publish those details, descriptions of the project should stay at the level of a planned scientific-infrastructure programme rather than a commercially available AI product.
How to interpret the announcement
The significant development is the commitment to explore a CERN-anchored foundation model trained on unique high-energy-physics data, not the arrival of a finished tool. The immediate work is expected to establish foundations, scale the programme and prepare production systems. For researchers, the practical questions will be whether later models outperform specialised pipelines, quantify uncertainty reliably and reproduce results across experiments. For the wider public, the clearest current answer is simple: CERN and Mistral have announced an ambitious plan, with first models targeted for 2029, while access and release terms remain undecided.
