1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf CentOS 7 reports Unit sshd.service could not be found, the usual cause is that the OpenSSH server package is missing. Install openssh-server, start the documented sshd.service unit, and enable it if it must start after every boot:
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
sudo yum install -y openssh-server
sudo systemctl start sshd.service
sudo systemctl enable sshd.service
sudo systemctl status sshd.service
Red Hat’s CentOS/RHEL 7 documentation is explicit: an OpenSSH server requires the openssh-server package. If the package is present but remote connections still fail, the problem is usually configuration syntax, firewalld, SELinux when a custom port is used, or a firewall or security group outside the machine.

What “sshd.service not found” means on CentOS 7
CentOS 7 uses systemd to manage services. The OpenSSH server package installs the server daemon, its systemd unit, and the usual configuration file:
openssh-serversupplies the daemon and thesshd.serviceunit./etc/ssh/sshd_configcontains the server configuration.sshdis the daemon that listens for incoming SSH connections.
When systemd says that sshd.service could not be found, systemd normally has no unit file to load because the server package is not installed. The client package can be installed while the server package is absent; commands that initiate outbound SSH connections do not prove that this host can accept inbound connections.

Do not confuse a missing unit with a stopped service. A stopped service exists but is inactive. A “unit not found” message means you should verify the package first.
Identify which layer is failing
Use the first command that matches the symptom. This prevents changing firewall or SELinux policy when the actual problem is simply a missing package.
| Symptom | Likely layer | First check |
|---|---|---|
Unit sshd.service could not be found |
Package or repository | rpm -q openssh-server |
yum install cannot find the package |
Enabled repositories, networking, or repository metadata | Read the complete yum error and inspect enabled repositories |
sshd -t reports a line or directive |
SSH configuration syntax or an invalid option | Correct the named line in /etc/ssh/sshd_config |
| The service fails after a configuration change | Configuration, permissions, SELinux, or another startup error | systemctl status sshd and journalctl -u sshd -b |
| The service is active but clients time out | Local firewall, upstream firewall, routing, address, or port | Check firewalld and the actual listening port |
| A custom port is rejected | firewalld and SELinux port policy | Allow the port in both layers |
Install the OpenSSH server package
1. Confirm whether the package is already installed
rpm -q openssh-server
If the command prints a package version, the server package is installed and you should continue with service, configuration, and network checks. If it reports that the package is not installed, install it with yum.
2. Install with yum
sudo yum install -y openssh-server
Run the command as root or through an account with sudo permission. A successful transaction installs the daemon and registers the sshd.service unit with systemd. Installing the client package alone is not a substitute.
3. If yum cannot find openssh-server
Do not replace the package name with an unrelated package. Capture the exact output from yum; the cause is then a repository, metadata, DNS, connectivity, or repository-configuration issue rather than a systemd problem. Check which repositories are enabled and whether this machine can reach them:
yum repolist enabled
The appropriate repository repair depends on how the CentOS 7 host is managed. Resolve that repository error first, then rerun the exact yum install -y openssh-server command.

- Start for the current boot:
sudo systemctl start sshd.service - Enable automatic startup at boot:
sudo systemctl enable sshd.service - Inspect the result:
sudo systemctl status sshd.service
systemctl start changes the current session. systemctl enable creates the boot-time relationship; it does not replace starting a currently stopped service. If you want both actions in one command on a systemd version that supports it, use:
sudo systemctl enable --now sshd.service
The explicit start-and-enable sequence remains useful when you want to see each operation and diagnose which one fails.
Test the SSH configuration before restarting
Editing /etc/ssh/sshd_config can make a working server fail on its next restart. Test the file before applying changes:
sudo sshd -t
A successful test produces no output and returns a successful exit status. If the command names a line or directive, correct that entry in /etc/ssh/sshd_config, save the file, and run sshd -t again. Repeat until the test passes.
Keep an existing console, virtual-console, or other administrative session open while changing SSH settings. That session is your recovery path if a syntax error, authentication change, address binding, or port change prevents a new login.
After the test passes, restart and inspect the unit:
sudo systemctl restart sshd.service
sudo systemctl status sshd.service
If the restart fails, read the boot’s service journal:

Allow SSH through firewalld
A running daemon can still be unreachable. CentOS 7 commonly uses firewalld as the host firewall, so inspect both the service and its active state:
sudo systemctl status firewalld
sudo firewall-cmd --state
sudo firewall-cmd --list-services
If firewalld is active and the server uses the standard SSH service, add the predefined SSH service permanently and reload the rules:
sudo firewall-cmd --permanent --add-service=ssh
sudo firewall-cmd --reload
Check the service list again after the reload. The permanent option writes the rule for future firewall reloads; --reload applies the permanent configuration to the running firewall.

Those controls are outside firewall-cmd and must be checked in the network path.
Using a non-standard SSH port
If /etc/ssh/sshd_config contains a changed Port value, every layer must agree on that port. For example, the following sequence applies to TCP port 2222:
- Test the daemon configuration:
sudo sshd -t - Permit the port in firewalld:
sudo firewall-cmd --permanent --add-port=2222/tcp sudo firewall-cmd --reload - Label the port for SELinux:
sudo semanage port -a -t ssh_port_t -p tcp 2222 - Restart the daemon and verify it:
sudo systemctl restart sshd.service sudo systemctl status sshd.service - Specify the port from the client:
ssh -p 2222 user@host
Red Hat documents that an additional or non-standard sshd port must use the SELinux ssh_port_t type. Without that label, SELinux can reject the daemon’s attempt to bind the port even when the SSH configuration and firewalld rule are correct. The semanage command may be supplied by the policy-management utilities package; if the command is unavailable, install the package appropriate to the host’s enabled repositories rather than disabling SELinux.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why SSH may work on localhost but not remotely
A local test proves only that a process can accept a connection through the local networking path. It does not prove that packets from another machine can reach the host. Work through these checks in order.
Confirm that sshd is active
sudo systemctl is-active sshd.service
sudo systemctl status sshd.service
An active result means systemd considers the daemon running. If it is inactive or failed, inspect the journal before investigating remote networking.
Confirm the configured port and address
Read the effective settings in /etc/ssh/sshd_config, paying particular attention to Port and any address-binding directive. A daemon bound only to a loopback address can accept local connections while ignoring the host’s network address. After any edit, run sshd -t and restart safely.
Check the local firewall
Use the firewalld commands shown above. Ensure the active zone and interface have a rule for the actual SSH port, not merely the default service name when a custom port is configured.
Check upstream controls and routing
If the service is active, listening on the expected address and port, and allowed by the local firewall, inspect the path between client and server. Common causes include a cloud security group, hosting-provider firewall, router forwarding rule, network ACL, wrong destination address, or a route that does not return traffic to the client.
Best Value
Distinguish a timeout from an immediate refusal
- A timeout usually indicates filtering, an unreachable route, or traffic sent to the wrong address or port.
- An immediate connection refusal usually indicates that no process is listening at that address and port, or that an intermediate device actively rejected it.
- An authentication error means the network path reached sshd; investigate credentials and SSH authentication policy rather than firewalld first.
Useful verification and log commands
These commands map a symptom to evidence without changing the server:
# Package and unit presence
rpm -q openssh-server
systemctl list-unit-files | grep sshd
# Service state and boot setting
systemctl is-active sshd.service
systemctl is-enabled sshd.service
systemctl status sshd.service
# Configuration and service logs
sshd -t
journalctl -u sshd -b
# Firewall state
systemctl status firewalld
firewall-cmd --state
firewall-cmd --list-services
# Listening sockets (run as root if required)
ss -lntp
The socket listing lets you compare the port sshd actually opened with the port in the configuration and the port used by the client. It also helps reveal whether the daemon is listening on all addresses or only one address.

Recovery paths for common failures
The unit remains missing after installation
Verify that the transaction really completed and query the package again:
rpm -q openssh-server
systemctl daemon-reload
systemctl status sshd.service
A package query that still reports no installation points back to the yum transaction or repository. If the package is present but the unit is still unavailable, inspect the installation output and package contents rather than creating a hand-written systemd unit.
The package installs but sshd will not start
Run sudo sshd -t, then read sudo journalctl -u sshd -b. Repair the exact configuration or startup error named there. Do not repeatedly restart an untested configuration.
The service starts, but the client cannot connect
Confirm the listening socket and configured port, check firewalld, then check upstream controls. If you changed the port, complete the SELinux ssh_port_t labeling step as well as the firewalld step.
You lost remote access after changing SSH settings
Use the still-open console or provider console, restore the last known-good configuration, run sshd -t, and restart the service. Keeping that fallback session open before making changes is the safest way to avoid locking yourself out.
Quick Recap
Temporary start versus persistent operation
| Goal | Command | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Run sshd now only | systemctl start sshd.service |
Starts the daemon for the current boot; it does not configure startup after reboot. |
| Start automatically after reboot | systemctl enable sshd.service |
Enables the unit for future boots; it does not necessarily start a currently stopped daemon. |
| Do both | systemctl enable --now sshd.service |
Enables the unit and starts it immediately. |
| Apply a tested configuration change | systemctl restart sshd.service |
Stops and starts the daemon using the current configuration; run sshd -t first. |
One-pass checklist
- Run
rpm -q openssh-server. - If absent, run
sudo yum install -y openssh-serverand resolve any repository error exactly as reported. - Run
sudo systemctl start sshd.service. - Run
sudo systemctl enable sshd.serviceif the server must return after reboot. - Run
sudo sshd -tbefore and after editing/etc/ssh/sshd_config. - Use
sudo systemctl status sshd.serviceandsudo journalctl -u sshd -bfor startup failures. - Check firewalld state and allow the standard SSH service, or the exact custom TCP port.
- For a custom port, label it
ssh_port_twithsemanage. - Compare the client’s destination and port with the daemon’s listening socket and investigate upstream firewalls or routing when local tests pass but remote tests fail.
