The Celestron SkyMaster DX 8×56 (item 72022) is an 8× Porro-prism binocular intended for both astronomy and terrestrial viewing. Its 56 mm objectives and 7 mm exit pupil suit its stated long-distance use, while its 38 oz (1,077 g) weight is a practical consideration for extended handheld sessions. The specifications support judging its format and fit; they do not establish how sharp or bright it looks in real-world use.
What the SkyMaster DX 8×56 is
Celestron’s current US listing names the model the SkyMaster DX 8x56mm Porro Binoculars, item 72022. The shorter “SkyMaster 8×56” name appears in older material. Celestron describes the binocular as “Suitable for terrestrial or astronomical viewing,” with particular emphasis on long-distance terrestrial viewing. That is the manufacturer’s intended-use statement, not an independent assessment of image quality.

The configuration is straightforward: 8× magnification, 56 mm objective lenses, and a 5.8° angular field of view. At 1,000 yards, Celestron gives the linear field as 305 feet. The binocular uses BaK-4 prisms and fully multi-coated lenses, according to the current product page.

These are manufacturer-published specifications, not independently measured test results. In particular, a large exit pupil or a stated brightness value should not be treated as proof of perceived brightness or detail: viewing conditions, eyesight, and the binocular’s optical performance all matter.

How the specifications translate into use
Astronomy and low-light viewing
The 8× magnification is a moderate-power format, and the 56 mm objectives produce a 7 mm exit pupil (56 divided by 8). Those numbers explain why Celestron positions this model for astronomy and long-distance viewing. They do not by themselves establish how well it performs on faint objects, how much detail it resolves, or how the image behaves toward the edge of the field.
For astronomy, the 5.8° field gives a broad stated view compared with high-magnification instruments, but the binocular still needs to be aimed and held steadily. At 38 oz, it is relatively substantial to keep raised for a prolonged session. Celestron says it is tripod adaptable, which may help with steadiness; the listing does not say an adapter is included or identify a compatible adapter.
Rank #2
- EASY-TO-USE ASTRONOMY BINOCULARS FOR BEGINNERS: Cometron 7x50 binoculars are an easy, affordable way to learn the night sky and get started with astronomy.
- 7X MAGNIFICATION: With a wide field of view that reveals a larger portion of the night sky, Cometron is ideal for panning across the Milky Way, exploring constellations, and viewing large objects like comets.
- 50MM OBJECTIVES WITH MULTI-COATED OPTICS: Large objective lenses gather more light while multiple layers of anti-reflective coatings boost light transmission. Views are bright and detailed with increased contrast and resolution.
- GREAT FOR DAY AND NIGHT USE: Not just for astronomy—these binoculars are also great for birdwatching, hiking, and scenic viewing with a close focus of 26.2 feet.
- TRIPOD-ADAPTABLE FOR STABLE VIEWING: Designed with a built-in tripod adapter socket so you can mount the binoculars on a standard tripod (adapter not included) for shake-free, extended viewing sessions.
Daytime and terrestrial viewing
Celestron specifically highlights long-distance terrestrial use. The 305 ft field at 1,000 yd helps describe how much scene is covered at distance. The 25 ft close-focus specification is less suited to subjects nearby than to distant scenery or wildlife. Waterproof construction and nitrogen filling are listed, but the product page does not provide an immersion rating or other detailed durability test.
Fit and comfort
Eye relief is listed as 18 mm, and the eyecup details on the current page should be checked if you plan to use the binocular with glasses. The 58–72 mm interpupillary range indicates the adjustment span between the eyepieces. At 1,077 g, weight is a meaningful trade-off: it may be manageable for shorter handheld viewing, but comfort will vary by user and session length. A neck strap is included.

- POWERFUL 15X MAGNIFICATION: Giant astronomy binoculars with massive 70mm objective lenses and 20x power. Pair them with any tripod for long-distance land-based viewing or astronomical observation.
- WORKS WITH YOUR TRIPOD: Due to their size & weight, most users mount SkyMaster binoculars on a traditional photo tripod (not included). The built-in ¼”-20 adapter attaches to most tripods in seconds.
- BRIGHT, SHARP VIEWS WITH BaK-4 PRISMS: The SkyMaster is a favorite among those who view in dim conditions near dawn and dusk or at night for astronomy. BaK-4 prisms maximize light throughput to your eye so you see brighter, more detailed images.
- DURABLE AND WATER-RESISTANT: A rubber-armored housing protects your binoculars from damage and provides a secure gripping surface. The water-resistant exterior stands up to tough conditions and unexpected rainy weather.

SkyMaster DX 8×56 versus Nature DX 8×56
Celestron’s closest same-size comparison is its Nature DX 8×56. Both models share 8× magnification, 56 mm objectives, a 7 mm exit pupil, waterproof and nitrogen-filled construction, and tripod adaptability. The main published differences are prism design, weight, eye relief, close focus, and field width.

What changed in older reviews and listings
Space.com’s 2014 review used the shorter SkyMaster 8×56 name and reported 35 oz and a 303 ft field at 1,000 yd, compared with Celestron’s current 38 oz and 305 ft. The reason for those differences is not established. Use the live manufacturer listing for current specifications rather than combining the two sets of figures.

Celestron’s 2020 catalog lists item 72022 under the SkyMaster 8×56 name; it is older reference material, while the current product page uses the DX name.

What comes in the box
Celestron lists objective lens caps, a rainguard, a Deluxe Nylon carrying case, a neck strap, a lens cloth, and an instruction manual. The product page says the binocular is tripod adaptable, but does not list a tripod adapter among the included items. Check the attachment requirements before purchasing an adapter.
Who should consider it
- Consider it if you want an 8×, 56 mm binocular in a Porro-prism design for the maker’s stated astronomy and long-distance terrestrial uses, and you can accommodate its listed weight.
- Compare the Nature DX if a roof-prism design, longer eye relief, closer focusing, or its wider published field is important to you. The specifications alone do not predict which image you will prefer.
- Look elsewhere or handle one first if you need a light binocular for prolonged handheld use, regularly view nearby subjects, or require proven performance in a particular optical condition; the published specifications cannot answer those questions.
Availability and price can change. Celestron’s listing identified Amazon among retailers but showed the product out of stock in the page snapshot consulted; verify that any current listing is for DX item 72022 and check live stock and price before buying.
