Celestron NexStar 4SE Review: A Compact GoTo Telescope for the Moon and Planets

The Celestron NexStar 4SE is a compact 4-inch Maksutov-Cassegrain telescope with computerized locating and tracking. Its long focal length and narrow field make it a better match for the Moon, planets, double stars, and brighter compact targets than for wide-field sky views. The GoTo system can help find objects, but it still requires alignment and user setup.

What is the NexStar 4SE?

The NexStar 4SE (Celestron item 11049) combines a 102 mm (4.02-inch) Maksutov-Cassegrain optical tube with a computerized altitude-azimuth single-fork mount. Celestron lists a 1325 mm (52-inch) focal length and f/13 focal ratio. Those specifications describe a compact instrument with substantial reach for its aperture, but a relatively narrow field of view.

The included 25 mm eyepiece provides 53x magnification, according to Celestron. The NexStar+ hand control provides access to a database of 38,181 objects in the manufacturer’s specification; that specific count is distinct from Celestron’s broader “40,000+” marketing language. [Celestron]

What can you actually see through it?

Moon and planets

The Moon and bright planets are the most natural targets for the 4SE’s long focal length. Celestron highlights lunar surface features, Saturn’s rings, and Jupiter’s cloud bands as examples. These are manufacturer examples, not guaranteed views: detail and contrast depend on atmospheric conditions, the telescope’s setup, and the observer’s expectations.

Celestron NexStar 4SE Maksutov-Cassegrain GoTo Telescope
  • ADVANCED TECH MEETS ICONIC DESIGN: The NexStar 4SE pairs Celestron’s legendary orange tube with a fully computerized GoTo system—ideal for those ready to step up from manual scopes and explore more of the night sky with precision and ease.
  • 4-INCH MAKSUTOV-CASSEGRAIN OPTICS: The 4" aperture, combined with high-contrast, long focal length optics, delivers sharp views of the Moon and planets, while remaining compact and easy to transport.
  • FULLY AUTOMATED GoTo MOUNT WITH NEXSTAR+ HAND CONTROL: Use the NexStar+ hand control to select from a 40,000+ object database. The computerized mount then automatically slews to your target and tracks it—no star charts or manual alignment needed.
  • FAST & EASY ALIGNMENT WITH SKYALIGN TECHNOLOGY: SkyAlign gets you observing fast—just center any three bright stars or planets, even if you don’t know their names. The system then calculates your position and aligns the mount in minutes.
  • BUILT-IN WEDGE FOR ASTROIMAGING: Capture long-exposure images of the night sky—perfect for entry-level astrophotography. The integrated wedge lets you polar align the mount, reducing field rotation for improved tracking during imaging.

Double stars and brighter deep-sky objects

Double stars and brighter, compact objects are also plausible targets. Celestron lists several deep-sky examples, particularly under dark skies. The 4SE’s 4-inch aperture and narrow field are limiting factors, however; do not expect sweeping views of large star fields or reliably dramatic views of faint galaxies and nebulae.

Space.com’s independent review describes the field of view as limited, while TelescopeSetup.com characterizes the telescope as biased toward the Moon, planets, and double stars. TelescopeSetup.com also states that its review was researched rather than tested in person. [Space.com] [TelescopeSetup.com]

How well does GoTo work?

The computerized mount is the 4SE’s main convenience feature: it is designed to locate and track selected objects rather than leave all searching to manual star-hopping. Celestron’s NexStar+ hand control supplies the object database, and the mount supports sidereal, solar, and lunar tracking rates.

GoTo is not automatic sky recognition. You must align the telescope, and pointing depends on completing that process appropriately. Celestron’s SkyAlign procedure uses three bright objects; the manufacturer also lists one-star, two-star, auto two-star, solar-system, and equatorial alignment options. Equatorial alignment requires a wedge. Celestron describes SkyAlign as making setup “simple, fast, and accurate”; that is the manufacturer’s promotional wording, not an independent performance finding. [Celestron]

Setup, power, and practical ownership

Alignment takes user input

SkyAlign’s three-bright-object process is one way to configure the mount, but Celestron lists several other alignment procedures. The built-in wedge supports equatorial alignment and, according to Celestron, long exposures; that alone does not establish the 4SE as a strong deep-sky imaging platform.

Plan for power

Eight AA batteries are required but not included. Celestron also specifies 12 V DC, 750 mA, tip-positive external power. Before buying a power supply or pack, verify the voltage, current rating, polarity, and exact connector; a product described generically as a telescope power supply is not necessarily compatible.

Consider transport and accessories

Celestron lists the complete kit at 23 lb. Space.com’s reviewer described transporting the setup as cumbersome and reported a weight of around 8 kg; that is the reviewer’s practical observation, not a standardized carry test. The optical tube is compact, but the full mount-and-tripod kit is a different proposition for someone carrying equipment on foot.

The supplied 25 mm eyepiece is a starting point. Space.com notes the limited field, so another compatible 1.25-inch eyepiece may be worth considering if you have a specific magnification or framing goal. There is no universally best added focal length established here; check compatibility and the intended use before buying. Celestron’s listed kit does not include a carrying case.

Who should buy the NexStar 4SE?

A good fit if

  • You want computerized object locating and tracking rather than relying entirely on manual searching.
  • Your main interests are the Moon, planets, double stars, and brighter compact objects.
  • You value a compact optical tube and are comfortable aligning the mount and planning for power.

Compare other designs if

  • You want broad views of large star clusters, expansive star fields, or other wide targets.
  • You prioritize a lightweight setup that is easy to carry assembled or on foot.
  • You are choosing primarily for faint deep-sky observing or imaging and need evidence about performance for those specific uses.

When comparing telescopes, consider aperture and target brightness, true field of view and focal length, manual versus computerized locating and tracking, total kit weight, alignment demands, and included accessories and power requirements. The specifications and reviews cited here do not establish a complete ranking of the 4SE against alternative models.
