Its listed features make it a candidate for visual observing and astrophotography, but the available evidence is manufacturer documentation—not independent testing—so real-world tracking, setup effort, and imaging results cannot be judged here. The key buying checks are whether you want an f/10 SCT, can manage the equipment, and have a compatible dovetail plate.
Which Advanced VX 8 is this?
This review covers Celestron item 12026: the standard 8-inch Schmidt-Cassegrain package. It is not the Advanced VX 8 EdgeHD, the 8-inch Newtonian package, or an AVX mount sold by itself. Check the product name and item number when comparing listings, since those configurations are not interchangeable.

Celestron positions this SCT package for visual observers and imagers, describing it as more portable than a reflector or refractor. That is the manufacturer’s positioning; there is no independent portability measurement or hands-on assessment established here. Celestron’s product page identifies the included configuration.
What comes in the box?
- 8-inch (203.2 mm) f/10 Schmidt-Cassegrain optical tube with StarBright XLT coatings
- Computerized Advanced VX German equatorial mount and NexStar+ hand control
- Steel tripod with 2-inch legs
- 25 mm eyepiece, 1.25-inch star diagonal, and 6×30 finderscope
The included eyepiece, diagonal, and finder are part of the stated package, so a listing that omits them may describe a different configuration. Celestron says the 8-inch tube gathers 84% more light than a 6-inch telescope; that is a manufacturer-stated comparison, not an independently verified result. Celestron product details.

What the f/10 SCT configuration means
The optical tube’s focal ratio is f/10. That identifies a relatively long-focal-ratio configuration, a meaningful choice for buyers weighing their preferred observing and imaging setup against a faster optical system. The supplied specifications do not include a focal length, field-of-view measurements, or comparative imaging results, so those should not be inferred from this review.
The practical question is whether this particular SCT is the optical design you want—not simply whether an 8-inch aperture sounds right. Compare the standard SCT with the EdgeHD version by exact model and specifications rather than assuming the names describe the same optical tube.

What the AVX mount offers—and what its rating does not promise
Celestron lists GoTo slewing and tracking, All-Star Polar Alignment, permanently programmable periodic error correction, an autoguider port, and two AUX ports. The company also says the mount supports imaging across the meridian and describes CPWI control software with ASCOM telescope-interface support. These are listed features; the available documentation does not establish pointing accuracy, tracking quality, setup time, or astrophotography performance.

Celestron rates the Advanced VX mount for a 30 lb (13.6 kg) payload and explicitly excludes counterweight mass from that figure. Treat it as the manufacturer’s capacity specification, not a guarantee that every setup below that mass will perform well for imaging. Celestron’s AVX mount page also lists the mount head at 17 lb (7.71 kg), the tripod at 18 lb (8.16 kg), and one 12 lb counterweight in the separate mount-and-tripod package.

- ADVANCED TECH MEETS ICONIC DESIGN: The NexStar 8SE pairs Celestron’s legendary orange tube with a fully computerized GoTo system—ideal for those ready to step up from manual scopes and explore more of the night sky with precision and ease.
- 8-INCH SCHMIDT-CASSEGRAIN OPTICS: The large 8" aperture gathers enough light to reveal fine lunar details, cloud bands on Jupiter, and deep-sky objects like galaxies and globular clusters—all in a compact, portable form factor.
- FULLY AUTOMATED GoTo MOUNT WITH NEXSTAR+ HAND CONTROL: Use the NexStar+ hand control to select from a 40,000+ object database. The computerized mount then automatically slews to your target and tracks it—no star charts or manual alignment needed.
- FAST & EASY ALIGNMENT WITH SKYALIGN TECHNOLOGY: SkyAlign gets you observing fast—just center any three bright stars or planets, even if you don’t know their names. The system then calculates your position and aligns the mount in minutes.
- COMPATIBLE WITH CELESTRON ACCESSORIES: Easily upgrade your setup with all our latest accessories to enhance automation, wireless control, or location accuracy as your skills grow.
Those component weights help set expectations for transport: the mount head and tripod alone total 35 lb, before the counterweight, optical tube, accessories, or cases are considered. This is a sum of Celestron’s listed component weights, not a weighed complete kit or an assessment of how convenient it is to carry.
Check the dovetail before buying or attaching an optical tube
The mount’s dual saddle accepts CG-5 and CGE formats, as well as Vixen-format plates that are at least 100 mm long. Celestron says Losmandy D-format plates are not compatible. If a Vixen/CG-5 plate is shorter than 100 mm, Celestron advises replacing it with a compatible plate and names its #94213 Universal Mounting Plate, CG-5 as one example. Verify both the format and length of your plate before ordering a replacement.

Who should shortlist the Advanced VX 8 SCT?
- Consider it if you specifically want an 8-inch f/10 SCT packaged with a computerized equatorial mount and the listed starter accessories.
- Check more closely if imaging is central to your decision: the feature list describes relevant controls and ports, but it does not establish the mount’s performance with a particular imaging load.
- Confirm before purchase the exact package identity, dovetail compatibility for any other tube you plan to mount, and whether the component weights suit your transport and storage situation.
The U.S. product page displayed $2,199 and “In stock” when accessed on October 7, 2026. Price and stock can change; check the live listing for current availability and terms. Celestron’s product page also displayed a two-year warranty and 30-day return policy at that access time, but confirm current terms and regional applicability directly with the seller.
