ARK Invest continued adding Rocket Lab (Nasdaq: RKLB) in three reported buying waves even after the stock fell below half of its late-May 2026 record close. The purchases show Cathie Wood’s firm is maintaining a long-term space-infrastructure thesis, not that the shares are a confirmed bargain. Rocket Lab is growing rapidly and building a large backlog, but its next major rocket has not flown, cash usage is rising, and issuing stock to fund acquisitions has diluted shareholders.
How much Rocket Lab stock did ARK Invest buy?
Reports published in October 2026 say ARK bought approximately 1.3 million Rocket Lab shares across three transactions. The reported purchases were worth more than $85 million in total at the prices used in the report.

Across three ARK funds, the firm reportedly held about 3.2 million Rocket Lab shares, valued at roughly $220 million at the prices in the October article. These are reported holdings and transactions, not a recommendation to buy or sell. Fund positions can change, and the figures should be checked against the latest regulatory filings before making an investment decision.
Why is Cathie Wood buying Rocket Lab?
ARK’s launch-capacity thesis
ARK analysts Tasha Keeney and Daniel Maguire argued in an October 5 newsletter that a future launch bottleneck could develop if SpaceX scales Starship toward roughly 10,000 launches a year by 2030 and retires Falcon 9 late in the decade. In that scenario, demand for other launch providers could increase, giving Rocket Lab an opportunity to supply launch capacity and related space systems.

That 10,000-launch scenario is ARK’s investment thesis, not an established industry forecast. The available coverage did not identify an independent third-party estimate validating it. Starship’s eventual cadence, Falcon 9’s retirement timing and the number of launches that commercial and government customers will require all remain uncertain.
Rocket Lab’s operating momentum
Rocket Lab’s latest reported results provide measurable support for a growth case. In the second quarter of 2026, the company reported $234 million in revenue, up 62% from the same quarter a year earlier. Backlog reached $2.36 billion, up 137% year over year. The company also announced more than $437 million of new launch contracts during the quarter, taking its total launch backlog above 90 missions.

Government and satellite contracts
The company also announced a $397 million U.S. Space Force SB-AMTI contract covering multiple spacecraft scheduled to launch on its planned Neutron vehicle. Separately, it announced more than $160 million across two geostationary-satellite contracts. These awards can improve visibility, but contract value is not the same as recognized revenue or profit; delivery schedules, costs and launch performance still determine the financial outcome.
What happened to RKLB’s share price?
At the October 12, 2026 publication point used in the report, Rocket Lab traded near $68. That was approximately 55% below its late-May record close of about $150, putting the shares at less than half their peak closing price. The percentage and dollar drawdown are volatile and need to be refreshed for any later publication or decision.
A fall of more than 50% does not by itself establish that a stock is undervalued. Investors still have to compare the current price with expected cash flows, dilution, execution risk and the probability that future programs succeed.

Can Neutron launch on time?
Neutron is the central execution risk in the ARK thesis. In the cited company update, Rocket Lab said first-flight hardware was in assembly, integration and testing, and that production of the first-stage tanks was aligned with delivery to the launch pad in the fourth quarter of 2026. The vehicle had not yet flown in the cited coverage.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Because Neutron is unproven, the schedule involves several linked milestones: completing hardware production, integrating and testing the vehicle, delivering stages to the pad, conducting ground tests and achieving a successful first flight. A delay or failure could push revenue recognition, increase cash needs and weaken customer confidence. Conversely, an on-time test program would remove an important uncertainty, although it would not eliminate the need to demonstrate repeatable launches at commercial scale.
What are the financial risks?
Operating losses and cash burn
Rocket Lab guided to a $17 million–$23 million adjusted EBITDA loss for the third quarter of 2026. The Motley Fool report also described second-quarter free-cash-flow burn of about $110 million, roughly twice the year-ago burn. Continued development of Neutron, launch infrastructure and spacecraft programs can require substantial spending before those projects generate cash.

Valuation after the sell-off
At a share price near $68, the cited article estimated a market value of about $46 billion and a valuation of roughly 44 times sales. That multiple is based on the prices and sales information available at that time; it is not a forecast of future earnings. A high sales multiple leaves less room for execution misses, slower growth or higher financing costs.
Share issuance and the Iridium acquisition
Rocket Lab had raised approximately $1.94 billion by mid-September by selling about 29.3 million shares to help finance its pending Iridium acquisition. As of June 30, the company reported approximately $2.1 billion in cash and $258 million in marketable securities. The new capital strengthens liquidity for expansion, but issuing shares increases the number of claims on future profits and reduces each existing shareholder’s percentage ownership.

- SAFETY FIRST, FUN ALWAYS: Our rockets are designed to be used with the NAR (National Association of Rocketry) model-rocket safety code. Always ensure you have an appropriate launch site, stand back at least 15 ft., insert the safety key, issue a countdown, and then you can let your rocket fly!
- ESTES EDUCATION: Since 1958, Estes has created educational rocket kits designed for an unforgettable launch experience. As a family-owned, US-based company, we offer exciting and engaging STEM products for all interests, skills, and power levels.
- Launch cadence and reliability: Can Rocket Lab deliver its existing missions consistently, and can Neutron progress from hardware testing to a reliable service?
- Backlog quality: How quickly will the $2.36 billion backlog convert into revenue, what milestones trigger payment, and how concentrated are customers?
- Growth economics: Does revenue growth translate into improving gross margins and eventually positive operating cash flow?
- Funding and dilution: How much additional capital might Neutron and the Iridium transaction require, and would more equity issuance follow?
- Valuation: Does a price near the level used in the October report already assume very strong long-term growth?
- Program readiness: Is the Neutron schedule funded and technically credible, or are key milestones slipping?
Investors who cannot tolerate a pre-flight vehicle, continuing losses or potential dilution may find the risk profile unsuitable regardless of the recent decline. Those willing to accept those uncertainties are effectively underwriting Rocket Lab’s ability to turn its backlog and new contracts into dependable launches and cash generation.
What ARK’s buying does—and does not—tell you
ARK’s purchases indicate that its funds still view Rocket Lab as a high-conviction, long-duration space investment. They do not prove that the stock has reached a bottom, that Neutron will launch in 2026, or that the launch-shortage scenario will occur. The relevant evidence is mixed: strong reported growth and contract wins on one side, and an unflown flagship rocket, operating losses, heavy cash use, high valuation and dilution on the other.
