Caterpillar announced on September 30, 2026, that it intends to invest approximately $1 billion in North Carolina to expand manufacturing capacity for its Cat Compact business. The plan includes a new facility in Sanford to make compact track loaders and telehandlers. The company has not announced a firm job count, construction schedule, completion date, facility size or state incentive award.
What Caterpillar plans to build
The proposed Sanford facility is intended to increase production of compact track loaders and telehandlers—equipment Caterpillar says is used in construction, landscaping, agriculture and material handling. The company links the expansion to demand for compact equipment and its Cat Compact strategy, which it says is designed to make the experience more streamlined and convenient for small contractors and growing businesses. Caterpillar’s September 30 announcement describes the investment as planned, not as money already spent.

The investment figure is not a disclosed estimate of the project’s economic impact, nor does it specify how much has been committed to particular construction or equipment costs. Caterpillar reported company-wide sales and revenues of $67.6 billion for 2025 in the same release; that figure is context about the company, not the Sanford project’s budget.
Technology and workforce plans
Caterpillar says the facility is expected to use advanced manufacturing technologies, automation, digital production systems and integrated logistics. It presents these as planned features intended to support safety, quality, operational performance and long-term growth—not as verified results from an operating plant.

The company also says the project will create opportunities for advanced manufacturing careers and support employee skill development in automation, robotics, digital manufacturing and advanced production systems. It has not quantified those opportunities or announced how many employees the facility will hire.
Why Caterpillar says it chose North Carolina
Caterpillar cites its longstanding presence in North Carolina, the local workforce and the opportunity to build on manufacturing expertise and existing operations in Sanford. That is the company’s stated rationale; the announcement does not provide an independent comparison with other locations or a detailed site-selection analysis.

North Carolina’s response
North Carolina Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley welcomed the investment, emphasizing manufacturing, innovation, opportunity, local partnership and apprenticeship opportunities. Lilley called it a way of putting “down even deeper roots in Sanford.” The state statement does not establish a finalized incentive package or specific hiring totals. The North Carolina Department of Commerce statement was also dated September 30, 2026.
