If your car suddenly gets much louder, accelerates poorly, or has an unusually strong exhaust smell, a catalytic converter may have been stolen. Arrange an inspection, report the theft, and contact your insurer before approving non-emergency repairs. Comprehensive auto coverage typically may cover theft, but your policy, deductible, and the vehicle-specific repair estimate determine whether a claim makes sense.

What to do if you think your catalytic converter was stolen

  1. Watch for signs and avoid relying on a visual check alone. A much louder exhaust, reduced responsiveness, and a foul or unusually strong exhaust odor can indicate a missing converter. Have a mechanic inspect the vehicle. If the exhaust has been cut or damaged, consider towing it rather than driving it; Progressive recommends towing the vehicle to a mechanic.
  2. Report the theft. Contact local law enforcement promptly and keep the incident or case number. An insurer may ask for a police report, but requirements vary, so ask your insurer what documentation it needs.
  3. Document damage safely. If it is safe, photograph the cut exhaust and surrounding damage before repairs. Contact your insurer and ask whether it needs an inspection or estimate before you authorize non-emergency work.
  4. Get an itemized estimate from a qualified shop. Ask the shop to identify the correct replacement converter and include any related damage, such as cut pipe, fittings, or sensors, plus labor and diagnostics. The exact scope depends on the vehicle and what was damaged during removal.

Progressive advises reporting the theft, towing the vehicle to a mechanic, and contacting the insurer if you have comprehensive coverage. See its catalytic converter theft and insurance guidance.

Does insurance cover a stolen catalytic converter?

Comprehensive coverage typically may cover catalytic converter theft and damage related to its removal. That is not a guarantee of payment: the terms and conditions of your policy control, and coverage can vary by insurer and state. Check your declarations and policy, then confirm the claim process with your insurer. Progressive explains that coverage depends on the actual policy; State Farm also notes that coverage and deductibles vary.

Compare your deductible with the written estimate before deciding whether to make a claim. If repair costs are close to the deductible, paying out of pocket may be worth considering; the right choice depends on your figures and policy. NICB’s 2021 guidance similarly advises contacting the insurer to discuss the best course. Ask whether the insurer needs a police report, inspection, or repair authorization, and whether your policy includes transportation or rental benefits.

How much does catalytic converter replacement cost?

There is no single current repair price that applies to every vehicle. Cost depends on the vehicle, converter type, required parts, related exhaust damage, labor, and location. Two published figures illustrate why it is important to distinguish a component price from a complete repair estimate:

Figure What it describes Important limit
$200–$2,500 Converter component prices cited by State Farm in 2025. Not a full theft-repair quote; State Farm says price varies by make and model, quality, and converter type.
$1,000–$3,000 NICB’s estimate to get a vehicle fixed in a 2021 news release. A historical estimate, not a current quote or a price for a particular vehicle.

Ask for a written, vehicle-specific estimate that itemizes the converter, any cut or damaged exhaust parts, affected sensors or fittings, labor, and diagnostics. The shop should identify the exact part required for your vehicle and jurisdiction; a low component price alone does not establish that a part is a legal or suitable replacement.

California replacement rules are different

California has specific rules that should not be assumed to apply nationwide. The Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) says a replacement must be an OEM converter or a CARB-approved aftermarket converter with an assigned Executive Order number that meets the exact requirements for the vehicle. The work should be done at a licensed Smog Check station, and the replacement must be installed before the vehicle’s next Smog Check. BAR says: “The replacement converter should be installed as soon as possible to avoid potential problems and damage to your vehicle, and must be installed before your vehicle’s next Smog Check.”

Use BAR’s California catalytic converter theft guidance and Auto Shop Locator to find an appropriate shop. If the required converter is on back order, BAR advises contacting the manufacturer or a Smog Check Referee. BAR also says California’s Consumer Assistance Program does not pay to replace a stolen converter.

Outside California, check your state’s emissions rules and use a shop familiar with local requirements. Do not assume a universal or inexpensive converter will be approved for your vehicle.

How to reduce the risk of another theft

Deterrents can make theft harder or draw attention, but none guarantees that a converter cannot be stolen. Options identified by BAR and Progressive include:

  • A vehicle-specific shield, plate, cage, clamp, or strap. Confirm year, make, and model fit and have a suitable device installed correctly. BAR warns that a device must not modify or damage the converter, must leave required identifying information visible, and should not be welded or attached directly to the converter.
  • Marking the converter. A VIN or plate-number marking may help identify it. BAR and Progressive also describe high-heat paint or labels as deterrents.
  • An alarm. A vibration-sensitive alarm may alert you or others to tampering.
  • Safer parking. When possible, park in a garage or well-lit, visible area; parking choices may reduce opportunity but cannot eliminate risk.

Ask a qualified mechanic to help choose a compatible barrier and install it without interfering with the converter or its identifying information. For prevention options, see Progressive’s catalytic converter theft prevention guidance.

State Farm reported that its own catalytic converter theft claims were 74% lower in the first half of 2024 than in the first half of 2023. That comparison is limited to State Farm’s claims data; it is not evidence of a national theft-rate decline.
