Cat 8 is shielded Ethernet cabling with RJ45 connectors for network traffic and Power over Ethernet. HDMI cables connect video and audio devices. Gold-plated contacts may be used on either type, but plating is a small connector-construction detail—not a speed grade, HDMI version or proof of certification.
Why the comparison is misleading
The phrase “gold-plated HDMI cable” often signals a premium-sounding upgrade, while Cat 8 is a defined Ethernet category. They solve different connection problems:

| Attribute | Cat 8 Ethernet | HDMI cable |
|---|---|---|
| Family | Twisted-pair network cable | Audio/video interface cable |
| Connector | RJ45, usually with shielded plugs | HDMI connector in the size and type required by the devices |
| Primary use | Switches, routers, computers, access points, servers and PoE equipment | TVs, monitors, game consoles, receivers, streaming boxes and PCs |
| Performance label | Category rating, bandwidth and supported Ethernet speeds | Official HDMI cable name, bandwidth rating and certification label |
| Gold plating | Contact-material detail | Contact-material detail |
An RJ45 plug cannot be inserted into an HDMI port, and an HDMI cable cannot replace an Ethernet patch lead simply because both may have gold-colored contacts.
What Cat 8 actually provides
The StarTech Cat 8 datasheet specifies operation at 10, 25 and 40Gbps, 2000MHz bandwidth, shielding and Power over Ethernet Plus Plus (PoE++) support up to 100W. Those figures describe the cable category and its tested construction, not the speed of an ordinary home internet subscription.
#1 Best Overall
- 40 Gbps 2000 Mhz High Speed: The Cat 8 ethernet cable support max. 40 Gbps data transfer and 2000 MHz Brandwith, ideal for gaming and streaming, greatly improving upload and download speed, sound, image and resolution quality
- Excellent Anti-interference: The ethernet cable comes with 4 shielded foiled twisted pairs (F/FTP), pure copper core and gold-plated RJ45 connector, reducing interference, noise and crosstalk, making network speed faster and more stable
- Marvelous Durability: Internet cable wrapped with quality cotton braided cord, which makes the LAN cable stronger and more durable. The test proves that this internet cable can be bent at least 10000 times without broken, very suitable for long-term use
- PoE Supported: All lengths of ethernet cord can support the PoE power supply function except 65ft. You don't need additional power supply when installing a PoE camera, which is very convenient and safe
- Wide Compatibility: With the RJ45 Connector, network cable can be perfectly compatible with computers, laptops, modems, routers, PS5, X-Box and other networking devices. It can also be fully backward compatible with Cat7, Cat6e, Cat6, Cat5e, Cat5
When those specifications matter
- 40Gbps links: Useful only when both network devices, their ports and the installation support that rate.
- 2000MHz bandwidth: A cable-performance specification; it does not make a slower router or switch operate at 2000MHz.
- PoE++ up to 100W: The stated maximum for compatible power-sourcing and powered devices. The actual delivered power depends on the equipment, cabling length and installation conditions.
- Shielding: Helps control interference when the entire link—including compatible connectors and proper grounding—is installed appropriately.
For a typical home with gigabit internet and standard gigabit switches, Cat 8 can be more capability than the network requires. It may still be selected for a demanding local network, a new high-speed backbone or a future-ready cable run, but the connected hardware remains the limiting factor.

HDMI LA cautions that resellers may use varied marketing language instead of the official cable names. Look for the relevant certification label and, where provided, scan the QR code to verify it. A listing that emphasizes “gold-plated,” “8K-ready” or a version number without an official cable designation gives you less useful evidence.

Choosing the right cable for common home setups
4K TV, console or streaming box
- Check the highest resolution, refresh rate, HDR format and eARC features your devices must use.
- Choose the HDMI cable class whose certified bandwidth covers that requirement.
- Verify the official HDMI certification label, especially for high-bandwidth links.
- Use the connector type and length that fit the equipment and installation; gold plating is optional construction detail, not the selection criterion.
Router, switch, desktop or access point
- Identify the fastest Ethernet port on each device.
- Buy an Ethernet cable with the appropriate RJ45 category and shielding for the environment.
- For a Cat 8 purchase, the relevant description is “Cat 8 Ethernet cable, RJ45,” with the claimed 10/25/40Gbps and 2000MHz specifications stated by the manufacturer.
- If the link carries power, confirm that both the power-sourcing and powered devices support the required PoE++ level; a cable’s “up to 100W” statement alone does not upgrade incompatible hardware.
TV connected to a router
You may need both cables: HDMI from the streaming box or console to the TV, and Ethernet from the box, TV or nearby switch to the network. HDMI carries audio and video; it does not become a general-purpose replacement for an RJ45 network cable.

Does HDMI with Ethernet replace network cabling?
Some HDMI products are named “Standard HDMI Cable with Ethernet.” HDMI LA describes this as a cable with the same baseline performance as Standard HDMI Cable plus a dedicated HDMI Ethernet Channel for device networking. That channel is part of the HDMI link and requires compatible equipment; it is not the same thing as running a Cat 8 (or other Ethernet-category) cable from a device to a router or switch. In many current setups, the HDMI Ethernet feature is not the networking method used by the equipment, so check the device manuals before relying on it.
Do gold-plated contacts make internet or video faster?
No. Plating can be used to help resist corrosion and maintain a reliable contact surface, but it does not change an Ethernet category, increase an HDMI link’s certified bandwidth or compensate for poor cable construction. Speed is determined by the cable’s certified class, the connectors, length and installation, plus the capabilities of every connected device.

Is Cat 8 worth it for home networking?
Choose Cat 8 when you have a concrete need for its rated performance—such as compatible 25/40Gbps equipment, a high-capacity local backbone or a PoE++ installation designed around that specification. For ordinary gigabit home networking, a lower category that meets the port requirements is often sufficient. Do not buy Cat 8 as an HDMI substitute, and do not treat a gold-plated plug as evidence that a cable is Cat 8 or HDMI-certified.
