Choose Anniversary for the series’ 8-bit and 16-bit foundation, Advance for the three Game Boy Advance adventures, and Dominus for the Nintendo DS trilogy. If you want all three eras on a Switch and are comfortable buying digitally, Nintendo also lists a Castlevania Collections Bundle that combines the collection families. The right purchase depends less on a universal ranking than on whether you prefer short, stage-based action or the exploration-heavy design that became central to later Castlevania games.
Which Castlevania collection should you buy?
There are three main compilations, each built around a different period of the series. Their game lists overlap very little, so buying the wrong one can leave a large gap in the era you actually wanted.

| Collection | Original focus | Best for | Current platforms listed by Konami |
|---|---|---|---|
| Castlevania Anniversary Collection | NES, Super NES, Game Boy, Sega Genesis and Famicom releases | Historical foundations and linear, stage-based classics | PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and Steam |
| Castlevania Advance Collection | Game Boy Advance trilogy plus Dracula X | Exploration-oriented GBA games in one focused package | Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Steam |
| Castlevania Dominus Collection | Nintendo DS trilogy plus two Haunted Castle versions | The DS era and its bonus arcade material | Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam |
These labels describe the documented lineups and the way the games play; they are useful buying shorthand rather than publisher categories.
Choose Anniversary if you want the original formula
Anniversary is the broadest historical sampler. It includes the NES trilogy, Super Castlevania IV, both original Game Boy games in the set, Sega Genesis’ Bloodlines and the Famicom version of Kid Dracula. Most of these are compact, stage-by-stage action games in which learning enemy patterns, jumps and boss rooms matters more than building a map or collecting a large number of permanent upgrades.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose Advance if you want the GBA trilogy
Advance is the direct answer to “Which Castlevania collection has the GBA games?” It contains Circle of the Moon, Harmony of Dissonance and Aria of Sorrow, with Dracula X as a bonus. The three GBA games are exploration-oriented entries: you revisit connected areas, gain abilities, discover shortcuts and return to earlier rooms with new options. Dracula X is a separate, more linear title rather than a fourth GBA-style exploration game.
Choose Dominus if you want the DS games
Dominus is the only compilation in this group with Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin and Order of Ecclesia. It also adds the arcade Castlevania known as Haunted Castle and Haunted Castle Revisited, a completely reimagined version of that arcade game. If your priority is the Nintendo DS era, no other collection substitutes for it.
Choose the Switch bundle for the broadest single purchase
Nintendo’s official Switch listing describes a Castlevania Collections Bundle that groups Anniversary, Advance and Dominus content. The listing specifically highlights the three GBA games, Dracula X, sketches and artwork, Anniversary Collection material and Dominus Collection material. Storefront contents and price can vary by region, so inspect the listing for your country before paying; the bundle is a digital-store option rather than a guarantee of a physical edition.
What is in Castlevania Anniversary Collection?
Konami announced Anniversary on May 16, 2019, for PlayStation Store, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch eShop and Steam at a suggested retail price of $19.99. That figure was the launch SRP announced in 2019, not a current price or a promise that every storefront still uses the same amount.
| Game | Original platform represented | What it contributes |
|---|---|---|
| Castlevania | NES | The foundational linear castle stages and whip-focused combat |
| Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest | NES | A more experimental adventure structure with towns, exploration and day-night changes |
| Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse | NES | Branching routes and selectable allies within a demanding stage-based framework |
| Super Castlevania IV | Super NES | Expanded 16-bit presentation and more flexible whip control |
| Castlevania: The Adventure | Game Boy | A portable early-series interpretation with slower, compact stages |
| Castlevania II: Belmont’s Revenge | Game Boy | A more developed Game Boy follow-up with selectable stage order |
| Castlevania Bloodlines | Sega Genesis | A Genesis-exclusive entry with distinct playable characters and stage design |
| Kid Dracula | Famicom | A lighter, character-driven spin-off presented in its original Famicom form |
The NES games are therefore present: the original Castlevania, Simon’s Quest and Dracula’s Curse are all included. Anniversary is not limited to NES software, however; Super Castlevania IV, the two Game Boy games, Bloodlines and Kid Dracula are part of the same package.
How Anniversary plays
The collection is strongest when you want to see how Castlevania’s core language developed: fixed stages, deliberate movement, enemy-pattern memorization, sub-weapons and boss encounters. Simon’s Quest is the outlier because it mixes combat with towns, clues and a larger world. That variety makes Anniversary a better historical sampler than a single, uniform campaign.

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.

Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Because the games were drawn from several systems, presentation and difficulty vary sharply. The Game Boy entries are designed around the limits of portable hardware, while Super Castlevania IV and Bloodlines show different 16-bit approaches. Treat the package as a museum-like cross-section rather than expecting every game to feel modern.
What is in Castlevania Advance Collection?
Konami announced Advance on September 23, 2021, as a multiplatform release for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Steam. The collection contains four games:
| Game | Role in the collection | Structure |
|---|---|---|
| Castlevania: Circle of the Moon | First of the three GBA Castlevania entries | Exploration-focused castle adventure |
| Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance | Second GBA entry | Exploration-focused adventure with interconnected areas |
| Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow | Third GBA entry | Exploration-focused adventure with an ability-collecting system |
| Castlevania: Dracula X | Bonus title; also known as Castlevania: Vampire’s Kiss in Europe | Linear, stage-based action |
If the phrase “the GBA collection” is what brought you here, Advance is the unambiguous choice. It gathers all three GBA Castlevania games in one purchase, rather than selecting only one. Dracula X expands the historical context but does not turn the set into a fourth metroidvania-style campaign.
How the GBA games differ from Anniversary
Circle of the Moon, Harmony of Dissonance and Aria of Sorrow are built around a connected castle rather than a sequence of isolated levels. Exploration, backtracking and character growth are central: a blocked passage may become accessible after you acquire a movement ability, key item or combat option. This creates longer-form progression than the compact stages in the NES games.
The games still differ from one another. Circle of the Moon is the earliest of the trio and has its own card-based magic system. Harmony of Dissonance emphasizes a large, layered castle structure. Aria of Sorrow uses collectible enemy abilities as a defining progression mechanic. Those distinctions are why Advance works both as a focused era package and as a way to compare the GBA design transition from one release to the next.

Dracula X supplies a more traditional, stage-based experience alongside the exploration games. European players may know the same title as Vampire’s Kiss. Do not buy Advance expecting every included game to follow the same map-and-backtracking format; Dracula X is the deliberate contrast.

What is in Castlevania Dominus Collection?
Konami announced Dominus on August 26, 2024. The official product information gives August 27, 2024, as the release date and lists Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam.
| Game | Original hardware or source | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow | Nintendo DS | A direct DS-era continuation of the exploration-oriented formula |
| Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin | Nintendo DS | A DS adventure built around two protagonists and portrait-linked areas |
| Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia | Nintendo DS | The final mainline DS entry, with a distinct ability-based combat system |
| Haunted Castle | Arcade | The original arcade version of Castlevania |
| Haunted Castle Revisited | Reimagined version | A completely reimagined version of the first Castlevania arcade game |
Dominus is the answer to “Which collection includes the DS games?” Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin and Order of Ecclesia are all present. The Haunted Castle additions broaden the package beyond a straight DS compilation, but they are bonus material rather than replacements for any of the three handheld adventures.
How the DS trilogy fits together
All three DS games continue Castlevania’s exploration-oriented direction, but each has its own structure and systems. They are a better fit for players who enjoy mapping a large world, upgrading a character and revisiting areas than for someone seeking a short run through discrete stages. The DS identity also matters: these games were designed for a dual-screen handheld, so the collection’s presentation is part of the buying decision for players who want that specific era preserved on modern hardware.
What Haunted Castle adds
Haunted Castle is the arcade Castlevania included in its original form. Haunted Castle Revisited is not merely an emulation of the same game; the official product description calls it a reimagined version of the very first Castlevania arcade game. That gives Dominus an unusual bonus: one historical arcade release and a modern reinterpretation packaged with the DS trilogy.
Advance versus Dominus: which is better?
Neither is universally better. Advance is the more concentrated purchase for GBA-era exploration, while Dominus is the newer set and the only one with the DS trilogy plus Haunted Castle material.
| Decision point | Advance | Dominus |
|---|---|---|
| Handheld era | Game Boy Advance | Nintendo DS |

For short, repeatable stage runs
Start with Anniversary. The NES, Super NES, Genesis and Game Boy selections are primarily level-based, so a session can mean clearing a handful of stages, practicing a boss or trying a different route. Dracula X in Advance also fits this preference, but it is only one game in that package.

For long exploration campaigns
Choose Advance or Dominus. Both center on collections of interconnected, exploration-oriented games. Advance gives you the GBA trilogy; Dominus gives you the DS trilogy. Your choice should follow the handheld generation and specific titles you want rather than a claim that one design is inherently superior.
For historical breadth
Anniversary covers the widest spread of older hardware in a single collection: NES, Super NES, Game Boy, Genesis and Famicom. It is the best starting point for understanding the series before the later exploration-focused period.
For the broadest modern catalog
The Switch bundle is the practical route if Nintendo’s regional listing shows all three collection families for your account. It is the only option described as grouping Anniversary, Advance and Dominus content together. Verify the exact contents and price at checkout, because those details are storefront- and region-dependent.

The collections are not all available on the same consoles. Anniversary and Advance both list Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Steam, while Dominus lists Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Steam. A player choosing a console edition should check the specific platform generation before assuming backward compatibility or a free upgrade.

Nintendo’s bundle listing is the strongest route for a Switch owner who wants a single transaction. Confirm whether the offer is a digital purchase, which collection content is included in your territory and whether your account’s currency and tax are shown before completing the order. No particular physical-stock or affiliate arrangement is implied by the existence of the bundle listing.
A practical decision checklist
- Identify the games you came for. NES, Super NES, Genesis, Game Boy or Famicom points to Anniversary; the GBA trilogy points to Advance; the DS trilogy points to Dominus.
- Choose your preferred structure. Pick Anniversary for mostly linear stages, or Advance/Dominus for interconnected exploration. Remember that each of the latter two has a more linear bonus component.
- Check your hardware. Match the collection’s listed platforms with the console or PC you actually use.
- Decide whether extras matter. Advance adds Dracula X; Dominus adds Haunted Castle and Haunted Castle Revisited; Anniversary’s value is its cross-system historical spread.
- Compare the live regional price. Anniversary’s $19.99 figure was its 2019 launch SRP. Store prices and bundle terms can change.
- Consider the bundle only if you want all three. On Switch, verify the current Nintendo listing’s contents and price before assuming it is cheaper or identical in every region.
Common buying mistakes
Assuming Anniversary contains the GBA games
It does not. Anniversary includes Game Boy titles, but Circle of the Moon, Harmony of Dissonance and Aria of Sorrow are in Advance.
Assuming Advance contains the DS trilogy
It does not. Dawn of Sorrow, Portrait of Ruin and Order of Ecclesia are exclusive to this comparison’s Dominus lineup.
