The game’s seven families are differentiated mainly by movesets, reach, hit coverage, charge behavior, and defensive or elemental effects rather than by one reliable stat line. Greatsword is the strongest crowd-control choice, Longsword is the safest all-purpose option, Dual Swords and Cestus excel during short boss openings, and Whip or Spear/Lance let you fight from farther away.
The comparison below treats damage, range, and speed as practical roles. Published guides describe how the weapons behave, but the available evidence does not provide a complete, frame-tested damage table for every weapon in the final release.

Which weapon type is best?
Choose the weapon that matches the situation rather than chasing a universal winner. Greatsword covers groups with broad, heavy swings; Longsword handles ordinary exploration with few weaknesses; Cestus converts sustained close-range combos into rising damage; Dual Swords deliver fast strings when a boss is vulnerable; Sword and Shield trades some offense for frontal protection; Spear/Lance offers long, throwable pokes; and Whip combines the longest practical reach with a damage bonus for accurate tip hits.
That role-based answer matters because the game is described as having seven weapon families, with four weapons in each family, for 28 weapons in the comparison guides. The differences come from how each moveset reaches targets and applies effects, not from a complete set of independently measured statistics. An attack that looks slower on paper can be better when it hits several enemies, while a lower-looking damage value can be preferable if it is safe to land repeatedly.

Longsword: the dependable exploration choice
Longsword is the balanced starting-style weapon. Its medium reach, moderate tempo, and movement-linked attacks make it useful in rooms where enemy spacing changes constantly. The guides describe extra damage after a slide or backdash, so movement is part of the weapon’s offense rather than merely an escape option. Its dash-through finisher also lets you cross an enemy while attacking, which is useful when a corridor leaves little room to retreat.
Longsword has no single extreme advantage: it is not the widest, fastest, safest, or hardest-hitting family. That is exactly why it works for general exploration. Use it when you do not yet know whether the next room will contain a swarm, a single armored target, or a platforming sequence that demands mobility.
One named weapon, Valmanway, adds delayed wind damage. Treat that wind hit as an effect layered onto the normal sword rhythm, not as proof that every one-handed sword has the same output. The delayed timing can also change how you finish an enemy: a target may appear safe and then be struck by the follow-up effect.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Greatsword: maximum coverage for crowds
Greatsword is the clearest crowd-control specialist. Its swings are slow, but each attack covers a broad arc and deals heavy damage to multiple targets. A spinning grapple attack reaches around the character through a full 360-degree motion, giving the family an answer when enemies surround you instead of lining up in front.
The cost is commitment. A missed swing leaves more recovery time than a Cestus or Dual Swords string, and the weapon’s charge-oriented handling asks you to read the room before attacking. The comparison guide describes hyper armor during the charge, which can let the attack continue through certain incoming hits; it does not make the character invulnerable to every attack.
Pick Greatsword when several enemies can be caught by one sweep, when a large hitbox makes broad coverage more valuable than precision, or when you can create a safe charging window. Against a lone, highly mobile boss, its slow wind-up can be less convenient than a faster family.

Cestus: fast strings that build charge
Cestus is a short-range fist weapon built around staying close. Its basic strings are fast, and the family’s damage improves as a combo charge is maintained. An uppercut or launching grapple gives the moveset vertical utility, allowing you to lift a target or begin a sequence rather than simply trading horizontal blows.

The Belmont’s Curse Atlas lists guide-reported charge multipliers of 1× at one charge point, 1.2× at four points, and 2× at nine points. These figures describe the guide’s in-game values; they are not an independently measured damage test. The practical lesson is that Cestus becomes more attractive the longer you can remain in contact without dropping the sequence.
That strength creates a clear risk. Short reach forces you to stand inside enemy attack range, and losing the charge removes the reason to choose Cestus over another fast weapon. Use it when you understand a boss’s safe distance, can stay behind or beneath a large target, or have a reliable way to re-engage after a launch.
Dual Swords: burst damage during boss openings
Dual Swords emphasize speed and repeated hits over reach. Their strings are described as fast and high-damage, making them especially effective when a boss is briefly exposed. The comparison guide recommends them for those punish windows: move into range, spend the opening on a concentrated sequence, and disengage before the attack pattern changes.
Short-to-medium reach means positioning still matters. Dual Swords are not a substitute for a ranged approach, and their value falls when an enemy spends most of the fight out of reach or protected by hazards. They are strongest when the player can predict exactly when contact is safe and can convert a few seconds into many quick hits.

Sword and Shield is the defensive family. Its damage depends on the weapon tier, but the defining feature is the ability to hold attack and guard incoming strikes from the front. That guard changes the decision you make when an enemy is about to connect: instead of always dashing away, you can hold your ground, absorb a frontal hit, and answer from a stable position.

The protection is directional. Attacks arriving from behind, above, below, or outside the guard’s coverage still require movement or repositioning. Close range and moderate handling also mean that Sword and Shield is not designed to outpace Cestus strings or match Whip’s reach. Choose it when learning enemy patterns, when a room funnels attacks toward you, or when surviving a frontal exchange is worth giving up some burst damage.
Spear and Lance: reach with a throwable option
Spear/Lance provides long-range poke damage without requiring the character to commit to a full close-range combo. Its attacks are slower to commit than the fastest fist or dual-blade strings, but the extra distance gives you more time to react after a hit.
The family’s distinctive action is the throw: hold the attack input to aim, then release to launch the spear. That converts a spacing weapon into a deliberate ranged tool. Use the hold-and-release timing when an enemy is approaching on a predictable line, when a platform makes contact dangerous, or when you need to finish a target without walking into its hitbox.
Named spear effects are described as adding behaviors such as pursuit or piercing. Those effects can change which target is safest to select and whether one projectile can continue through a line of enemies. Because the guides do not supply a complete effect list for every spear, evaluate the specific weapon’s behavior rather than assuming the whole family has identical properties.
Whip: the longest reach and a precision reward
Whip is the spacing specialist. It reaches across a room-scale distance, can be aimed diagonally, and rewards striking with the tip: tip hits deal more damage than less precise contacts. That makes the weapon’s best play pattern deliberate rather than frantic. Stand just outside an enemy’s preferred range, place the end of the whip on the target, and use the extra reach to avoid trading hits.
The grapple function adds another spacing tool. It can pull or reposition the character around the environment, letting you preserve distance or create a new angle. Whip therefore suits players who prefer controlling where a fight happens instead of committing to a stationary combo.

The named Vampire Killer adds burning tip hits and fiery explosions when enemies die. Those are effect properties of that weapon, not a blanket rule for every whip. The burn and kill explosion can improve its performance against clustered enemies, but the basic family advantage remains reach plus tip accuracy.
How to choose for common situations
When a room is crowded
Start with Greatsword. Its broad sweep and spinning grapple can hit several enemies at once, so one committed attack may outperform a faster single-target string. If you cannot safely charge, Whip’s distance or Sword and Shield’s frontal guard can be safer alternatives.
When exploring unfamiliar areas
Longsword is the least specialized choice. Its medium reach and movement bonuses cover ordinary enemies, while the dash-through finisher gives you a way to pass a target rather than remain trapped on one side. It is the family to use when you do not want your equipment decision to assume a particular room layout.
When a boss is briefly vulnerable
Dual Swords are the straightforward burst option. Cestus can compete or exceed that payoff if you can remain close enough to build charge, but it carries more positional risk. Use Dual Swords when the opening is short and you need immediate strings; use Cestus when the opening lasts long enough to maintain its multiplier.
When safety matters more than speed
Whip and Spear/Lance both create distance. Whip rewards precise tip placement and allows diagonal attacks, while Spear/Lance lets you aim and throw. Choose Whip for continuous spacing and repeated pokes; choose Spear/Lance when a single aimed projectile or a named pursuit/piercing effect is more useful.
When attacks arrive from one direction
Sword and Shield is the specialist answer. Hold attack to guard frontal strikes, then counter when the enemy’s sequence ends. Reorient before relying on the guard, because it does not replace awareness of attacks arriving outside the front arc.

What the damage, range, and speed claims really mean
The available comparisons are useful for choosing roles, but they should not be read as laboratory frame data. Belmont’s Curse Atlas explicitly says that listed DPS is the game’s display value, not a measured damage-per-second result. The reviewed material supplies qualitative behavior and selected displayed values, not a complete authoritative table of startup frames, recovery frames, hitbox dimensions, or final-release balance changes.
That limitation affects rankings. “Greatsword does the most damage” is too broad: it delivers heavy hits and excellent multi-target coverage, but a faster weapon may deal more damage over a short boss opening. “Whip is fastest” is also wrong: its advantage is reach and spacing, not rapid close-range strings. Compare a weapon on the axis that matters in the encounter—targets per swing, safe distance, time available, or the ability to maintain an effect.
Practical testing checklist
If you want to verify a weapon in your own copy, use the same conditions for each family rather than treating a single hit as a definitive ranking.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Test one isolated target and then a group. Record whether the attack connects with one enemy or several.
- Measure the distance at which the normal attack, grapple, and special effect can connect. Check horizontal and diagonal angles separately for Whip.
- Repeat a short attack string and note how long it takes to complete, including recovery after a miss.
- For Cestus, deliberately maintain one, four, and nine charge points and compare the displayed multiplier at each stage.
- For Spear/Lance, hold to aim, release at several distances, and check whether the selected weapon pursues a target or pierces through one.
- For Sword and Shield, test frontal, side, and rear attacks separately so you know where the guard applies.
- For effect-focused weapons, watch for delayed wind damage, burning tip hits, kill explosions, or other follow-up behavior instead of judging only the first impact.
This procedure produces a useful personal matchup guide, but it should not be presented as an official frame-tested balance table unless the game’s developers publish those measurements.
Common selection mistakes
- Picking by one displayed number: A game-display DPS figure does not establish measured damage per second, and it ignores multi-target coverage, safety, and effect timing.
- Using Greatsword for every fight: Its crowd strength does not remove the cost of a slow wind-up against mobile single targets.
- Ignoring spacing with Cestus: The charge multiplier only helps while you can stay close and preserve the combo.
- Standing too close with Whip: You give up the family’s main advantage if you do not use its reach and tip-hit positioning.
- Treating a named effect as universal: Valmanway’s delayed wind, Vampire Killer’s burn and fiery kill explosions, and individual spear behaviors belong to specific weapons.
- Assuming guard covers every angle: Sword and Shield is built around frontal protection, so attacks from other directions still require movement.
The practical verdict
For most players, begin with Longsword while learning rooms and enemy patterns. Switch to Greatsword when groups and wide hitboxes dominate, Dual Swords when a boss repeatedly offers short punish windows, or Cestus when you can safely maintain close-range charge. Pick Whip or Spear/Lance for distance, and Sword and Shield when frontal guarding is more valuable than maximum burst.
Those recommendations are deliberately situational. The evidence supports clear family roles, but not a definitive overall damage ranking for all 28 weapons. Your best choice is the one whose reach, tempo, and effects solve the encounter you are actually facing.
