Choose Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse if you want demanding precision platforming, whip combat, secrets and an unmistakably classic Castlevania identity. Choose Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night if you want the deeper long-term RPG loop, with equipment, loot, crafting and build experimentation.
For most players looking for progression that keeps expanding, Bloodstained is the safer recommendation. If your priority is challenge, platforming, Belmont family lore and a tightly focused action-exploration structure, Belmont’s Curse is the better fit. They share gothic castles and side-scrolling exploration, but they satisfy different reasons for playing this genre.

At a glance: which game fits your priorities?
| What you care about | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Classic Castlevania atmosphere and lore | Belmont’s Curse | It follows Rose Belmont and Trevor Belmont in a story set 23 years after Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse, with a 1499 Paris setting and a mystical castle. |
| Precision platforming | Belmont’s Curse | Traps, demanding jumps, hidden upgrades and backtracking are central to its fixed-map design. |
| Weapons, loot and crafting | Bloodstained | Miriam gathers equipment and materials, crafts items and develops a character build while opening new areas. |
| Long-term build experimentation | Bloodstained | Its RPG structure gives you more ways to change how your character fights and progresses. |
| A punishing challenge | Belmont’s Curse | Contemporary coverage describes frequent deaths, punishing bosses and occasional one-hit-kill traps, although accessibility options are available. |
| A broader action-RPG experience | Bloodstained | Its design combines side-scrolling exploration with progression systems, loot collection, crafting and boss encounters. |
Neither game is simply a replacement for the other. Belmont’s Curse is the more focused test of movement, timing and route knowledge; Bloodstained is the more systems-heavy adventure where preparation and character growth can change the answer to a difficult encounter.
What Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse is
Belmont’s Curse is a 2D action-exploration game from Konami. Its story takes place in Paris in 1499, 23 years after the events of Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse. Rose Belmont and Trevor Belmont face monsters and a mystical castle in a new chapter built around the Belmont legacy.

The game’s identity comes from direct control rather than a large inventory. The whip is the defining weapon, while seven weapon categories, relic effects and Arcana earned from bosses add tactical variety. You are expected to learn enemy patterns, read hazards and use the right tool for a particular room or boss instead of relying on a continuously expanding equipment spreadsheet.
Its map rewards attention
The castle is a fixed interconnected space rather than a sequence of disposable stages. Secrets, hidden upgrades and optional routes make returning to earlier areas worthwhile. A blocked passage may become useful after you find an upgrade, and a suspicious wall or awkward platforming section can conceal a meaningful reward.
This structure makes exploration feel deliberate. The game is not asking you to collect every object for statistical completion; it is asking you to remember places, test boundaries and accept that progress may require revisiting a dangerous room with better knowledge.

The challenge is part of the design
TechRadar describes the level design as “phenomenal” while also emphasizing the steep difficulty curve, frequent deaths, punishing bosses and occasional one-hit-kill traps. Accessibility options soften some of that pressure, but the core experience remains demanding. The reviewer’s approximately 16-hour PS5 session is a report of that individual review playthrough, not an authoritative completion-time figure for every player.
That distinction matters when choosing between the games. If you enjoy repeating a room until a jump, trap sequence or enemy pattern becomes reliable, Belmont’s Curse turns failure into a learning loop. If you prefer to overcome a wall by changing equipment, crafting a better item or adjusting a build, Bloodstained offers more system-based alternatives.
What Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is
Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is a gothic-horror action side-scrolling RPG set in 18th-century England. You play Miriam, an orphan marked by an alchemist’s curse, as she explores a demon-infested castle, gathers weapons and loot, crafts equipment and fights bosses while trying to stop Gebel.

Its central appeal is accumulation. New weapons, equipment, materials and abilities gradually broaden what Miriam can do and how you can configure her. A difficult room can be approached through movement and timing, but it can also be made more manageable by changing your loadout, improving gear or using a different combination of abilities.
Progression is broader than a weapon upgrade
The RPG layer affects both combat and exploration. You are not merely looking for the next key; you are building a character capable of handling later parts of the castle. Loot gives exploration a practical purpose, while crafting turns collected materials into potential solutions rather than static trophies.
Nintendo’s listing identifies the game as a difficulty-choice title and highlights its progression systems. That supports a flexible approach to challenge, but it does not establish an equivalent difficulty rating to the specific reports about Belmont’s Curse. The two games should therefore not be treated as having a directly comparable difficulty scale.
Combat and movement: precision versus options
How Belmont’s Curse plays
Rose’s whip is the combat anchor. Encounters reward spacing, timing and recognition of enemy behavior, while the seven weapon categories and relic effects give you additional answers without turning the game into a full character-build simulator. Boss-derived Arcana adds a further layer: defeating a major enemy can change the tools available to you in later fights and exploration.
Movement is inseparable from combat. A jump is not only a way over a gap; it may be the difference between avoiding a trap and losing a life. Because hazards can be severe, rushing into an unfamiliar screen is often less effective than pausing to identify enemy positions, platforms and safe landing points.

Miriam’s combat toolkit is organized around an RPG framework. Weapons, equipment and loot let you tune damage, defenses and preferred attack patterns. Crafting gives materials a role in the progression loop, and the combination of exploration rewards and character development lets you prepare for a boss rather than relying solely on execution.

This does not make Bloodstained a passive game. You still need to read attacks, move through a hostile castle and learn boss patterns. The difference is that the game gives you more levers to pull when a particular approach is not working.
Which movement model suits you?
- Pick Belmont’s Curse if you want every jump, whip strike and dodge to feel like a test of control.
- Pick Bloodstained if you want movement and combat decisions to interact with equipment, crafting and character progression.
- Pick both if you want to see how a classic action-exploration structure and a modern RPG interpretation solve the same gothic-castle fantasy in different ways.
Exploration and backtracking
Belmont’s Curse uses a fixed map where secrets and upgrades encourage deliberate backtracking. Exploration is rewarded, but the reward is often knowledge: recognizing a false-looking wall, remembering a previously inaccessible route or discovering that an apparently optional platforming challenge leads to a useful improvement.
TechRadar specifically notes that the traps and platforming demand precision while exploration pays off. That combination creates a high-risk route-planning game. You are constantly balancing curiosity against the possibility of losing progress to a trap you have not yet learned.

Bloodstained also makes opening new areas and collecting items central to its structure, but its motivation is more explicitly RPG-driven. A new section can reveal weapons, materials, equipment and crafting possibilities in addition to a route through the castle. Returning to a familiar location is therefore connected to both map access and character growth.
| Exploration question | Belmont’s Curse | Bloodstained |
|---|---|---|
| Why revisit an area? | To reach hidden upgrades, secrets or routes that were previously inaccessible. | To open new areas, collect loot and materials, and improve or change your build. |
| What makes exploration tense? | Traps, demanding platforming and the risk of losing a life through a mistake. | Hostile rooms and bosses, balanced by the ability to prepare through gear and progression. |
| What kind of player gets the most from it? | Someone who enjoys memorizing layouts and mastering movement. | Someone who enjoys searching for items and turning discoveries into stronger options. |
Bosses and difficulty
Belmont’s Curse presents bosses as execution checks. Punishing patterns and occasional severe hazards mean that success depends on learning tells, controlling space and using your available relics or Arcana intelligently. A failed attempt can reveal the timing you need for the next one, but the game may require several attempts before that knowledge becomes consistent execution.
Bloodstained also uses bosses as major progression gates, yet the RPG framework changes how you prepare. You can approach a wall by refining your movement, but you also have the option of improving equipment, changing weapons or crafting items that suit the encounter. The cited material confirms a difficulty-choice tag and extensive progression systems, not a specific ranking against Belmont’s Curse.

Accessibility and tolerance for repetition
Accessibility options in Belmont’s Curse can reduce some friction, but they do not turn its design into a relaxed platformer. Players who dislike repeating a difficult sequence should understand that the game’s reputation for frequent deaths is tied to its central action loop, not an isolated challenge mode.
Bloodstained is the better choice when you want multiple ways to respond to difficulty. Its systems let preparation matter alongside reflexes. That does not guarantee an easier game in every situation, and the available evidence does not justify assigning either title a universal difficulty score.
Story, tone and presentation
Belmont’s Curse leans heavily into Castlevania-specific presentation: Belmont family history, a late-medieval Paris setting and a gothic castle filled with supernatural threats. GamesRadar reviewer Serena Cherry called it “a hugely compelling Metroidvania and a triumphant return for the iconic franchise.” The game also uses puzzles and an anime-like story presentation alongside its action.
GamesRadar praises the gothic atmosphere, puzzles, story and action, while noting that much of the soundtrack is less impressive than the visuals and narrative presentation. That is useful context for players who treat music as a major part of a Castlevania experience: the visual and thematic identity may be the stronger draw.
Bloodstained shifts the setting to 18th-century England and puts Miriam’s curse, alchemical history and the demon-infested castle at the center. Its tone is still gothic horror, but its narrative role is tied to an RPG adventure: Miriam’s identity and mission unfold as you explore, gather resources and defeat bosses connected to Gebel.

Nintendo lists the Switch release of Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night as June 25, 2019 and identifies 505 Games as publisher. The exact edition and current platform availability should be checked by region, especially if you are buying a physical copy or a version for a newer console through backward compatibility or a digital storefront.
No reliable evidence here establishes a universal price, frame-rate parity across platforms, sales figure or identical content across every edition. Treat those as storefront-specific details rather than assumptions about either game.
Should you buy Belmont’s Curse if you already own Bloodstained?
Yes, if what you want next is a different emphasis rather than another version of the same RPG. Belmont’s Curse gives you a more focused Belmont-led story, a whip-centered combat identity, stricter platforming and a map where secrets are discovered through observation and route mastery. Owning Bloodstained does not make those qualities redundant.

A decision guide by player type
Choose Belmont’s Curse when:
- You want a direct connection to the Belmont lineage and the events following Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse.
- You enjoy precision platforming, hidden routes, fixed-map backtracking and learning traps through repeated attempts.
- You prefer a whip and a compact set of weapon and relic decisions over a large crafting-and-loot economy.
- You are comfortable with frequent deaths and bosses that demand pattern recognition.
- You want the stronger Castlevania-specific identity, even if the soundtrack is not uniformly as strong as the visual and story presentation.
Choose Bloodstained when:
- You want a gothic action RPG rather than a tightly focused action-exploration challenge.
- You enjoy collecting weapons, equipment and materials.
- You want crafting to turn exploration into practical character improvements.
- You like changing builds and preparing for difficult encounters through progression as well as execution.
- You prefer Miriam’s 18th-century England setting and her story about an alchemist’s curse and the mission to stop Gebel.
Choose both when:
- You want to compare two approaches to side-scrolling gothic-castle design without expecting identical combat systems.
- You value both movement mastery and RPG experimentation.
- You are interested in how a Belmont-focused adventure handles challenge differently from a Miriam-focused progression game.
How to start with the right expectations
- Decide what you want to improve. For Belmont’s Curse, expect to improve your timing, route memory and hazard recognition. For Bloodstained, expect to improve your build, equipment choices and resource use.
- Set your tolerance for repetition. If repeating a platforming sequence sounds satisfying, begin with Belmont’s Curse. If repeating a boss is acceptable only when you can change your preparation, begin with Bloodstained.
- Check the edition before buying. Confirm platform, region, physical or digital format and any Midnight Edition contents for Belmont’s Curse. For the Switch version of Bloodstained, confirm that the listing is the edition you intend to purchase.
- Use the first hours as a preference test. In Belmont’s Curse, pay attention to whether discovering a hidden route and mastering a dangerous room feels rewarding. In Bloodstained, notice whether comparing gear, collecting materials and adjusting your character is the part you naturally want to keep doing.
The verdict
Belmont’s Curse is the better choice for precision platforming, challenge, secrets, whip combat and Belmont lore. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is the better choice for loot, crafting, equipment and long-form RPG build experimentation. If you want one recommendation without further qualification, choose Bloodstained for the broader progression loop; choose Belmont’s Curse when the specific pleasure of mastering a hard, Castlevania-focused action adventure matters more than systemic breadth.
