Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteCastlevania: Belmont’s Curse does not have separate Easy, Normal, and Hard buttons. Instead, its Custom Mode lets you change individual rules in the Gameplay settings. You can shorten boss runbacks, carry more potions, deal more damage, take less damage, gain experience faster, or prevent death altogether. The best approach is to change only the rule connected to your problem, while leaving the rest of the game intact.
What difficulty options does Belmont’s Curse have?
There is no traditional difficulty selector in Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse. The game presents one standard ruleset and an optional Custom Mode made up of separate modifiers. That design lets you adjust a single source of frustration instead of switching the entire game to a broad easy setting.

Custom Mode is found in the Gameplay section of Settings. The Settings screen has six tabs: Controls, Accessibility, Gameplay, Video, Audio, and Language. Settings can be opened from the main menu or during a run through the in-game System tab.

How to change the difficulty settings
- From the main menu, open Settings. During a run, pause the game, open System, and choose Settings.
- Select the Gameplay tab.
- Turn on Custom Mode and read the achievement warning before confirming.
- Change the individual modifier that matches your problem. You do not need to alter every option.
- Back out of the menu and play a short section to check whether the change solves the issue without removing more challenge than you intended.
To return to the standard rules, revisit the same Gameplay page and switch Custom Mode off. For achievement attempts, check that the toggle is disabled before starting the relevant challenge.
What each Custom Mode modifier changes
The available options target six different parts of the experience: repetition, healing, combat output, incoming damage, progression and the consequences of failure. The exact labels below follow the modifier list documented for the game.
| Modifier | What it changes | Best use | Effect on challenge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Allow Respawn In Front Of Boss Doors | Places you back at the boss entrance after a failed attempt instead of requiring the longer route again. | Boss runback fatigue or limited practice time. | Reduces repetition, but does not make the boss’s attacks weaker. |
| Damage Dealt | Increases your attack damage, with the documented scale reaching up to five times. | Enemies or bosses take too long to defeat, or your execution is close but not quite enough. | Shortens encounters and reduces the number of attack cycles you must survive. |
| Maximum Number Of Potions | Raises how many healing potions you can carry. | You understand the fights but run out of healing during long areas or boss attempts. | Preserves normal enemy damage while giving you a larger recovery reserve. |
| Prevent Death | Removes the normal death condition. | A no-failure practice run, or a player who cannot progress while death remains possible. | Most extreme change; it fundamentally alters the risk-and-retry structure. |
| Damage Received From Enemies | Adjusts how much damage enemy attacks inflict. | You can read enemy patterns but mistakes are too punishing. | Makes ordinary combat more forgiving without increasing your damage. |
| Damage Received From Traps | Adjusts damage caused by environmental traps. | Hazards, rather than enemies, are the main reason attempts end. | Protects against environmental mistakes while leaving enemy encounters unchanged. |
| Experience Gained | Accelerates experience collection, with the documented scale reaching up to three times. | You are blocked by progression and want levels to arrive sooner. | Improves character growth rather than directly changing attack timing or enemy behavior. |
The menu is granular: a player can combine several modifiers, but each additional change makes it harder to identify which adjustment solved the original problem. Start with one.
Which configuration should you choose?
For a first playthrough or a series-purist run
Leave Custom Mode off. Director Yukiko Hokao explained the design goal plainly: We didn’t want it to be a simple or easy game. That isn’t Castlevania.
The standard rules preserve the intended balance of combat, exploration, leveling and failure. You can still use the normal level-up system to strengthen your character over time.
Producer Tsutomu Taniguchi has also said that players who struggle with a battle have numerous alternatives
, and that the level-up system is intended to help newcomers and people who are less comfortable with action games. Try those in-game options before changing the rules if you want the unmodified experience.

For boss runback fatigue
Enable Allow Respawn In Front Of Boss Doors and leave combat values alone. This is the cleanest adjustment when the boss itself is enjoyable but the walk back after every defeat is not. It cuts repetition without changing the boss’s damage, health or attack patterns.
For a shortage of healing
Increase Maximum Number Of Potions. Choose this when you regularly reach the end of a difficult section with a workable strategy but no healing left. It keeps the combat numbers intact and gives you more room to recover from attrition.
For a combat execution barrier
Use Damage Dealt if you need fights to end sooner, or reduce Damage Received From Enemies if your main issue is surviving mistakes. Damage Dealt can be raised as high as the documented five-times setting, while incoming enemy damage is a separate control. Change one of them first so you can tell whether faster kills or greater forgiveness is what you actually needed.
For a progression barrier
Raise Experience Gained when your character feels under-levelled and the main obstacle is the time required to reach the next power increase. The documented setting goes up to three times experience. This is different from Damage Dealt: it speeds advancement, whereas Damage Dealt changes the immediate length of encounters.
For trap-heavy areas
Adjust Damage Received From Traps if environmental hazards are ending attempts. Do not lower enemy damage at the same time unless enemies are also a problem; otherwise you may remove difficulty from sections that were already working for you.

For a no-failure practice run
Choose Prevent Death only when removing death is the objective. It is not a small convenience setting: it changes the central consequence that makes positioning, resource management and learning attack patterns matter. It can be useful for exploring or practicing, but it is the furthest option from the standard challenge.

Accessibility settings are separate from difficulty
Not every useful adjustment belongs to Custom Mode. The Accessibility tab contains comfort and readability controls such as screen-shake options, outlines, subtitles, audio controls, vibration and control remapping. These settings can make the game easier to read or more comfortable to operate without assuming that enemies should be weaker.
- Turn down or disable screen shake if visual motion makes attacks difficult to track.
- Enable outlines when characters or hazards blend into the background.
- Use subtitles if dialogue or sound cues are hard to hear.
- Adjust audio and vibration independently of combat modifiers.
- Remap controls when the default layout causes missed inputs or hand strain.
Because these controls are separate, you can keep standard enemy balance while addressing a sensory, motor or comfort barrier.
Custom Mode and achievements
The game’s warning is specific: Some achievements will be unobtainable if ‘Custom Mode’ is enabled.
It does not say that every achievement is blocked, so do not assume a blanket ban or assume that a particular achievement remains available. Treat the warning as the authoritative rule for your run.
The safest plan is to maintain an unmodified save or playthrough for achievement attempts and use a separate Custom Mode run for experimentation. Before pursuing an achievement, open System → Settings → Gameplay, confirm that Custom Mode is off, and then begin the attempt under the standard rules.

A practical decision matrix
Use this matrix when you know what feels wrong but are unsure which setting addresses it.
| Your problem | First setting to try | What changes | What remains intact |
|---|---|---|---|
| The route back to a boss is wasting time. | Allow Respawn In Front Of Boss Doors | Runback length and repetition. | Boss combat and damage values. |
| You run out of healing late in an area. | Maximum Number Of Potions | Your healing reserve. | Enemy and trap damage. |
| You nearly win, but the fight lasts too long. | Damage Dealt | Your attack output; up to five times is documented. | Enemy attack behavior and incoming damage. |
| You understand attacks but cannot survive mistakes. | Damage Received From Enemies | Enemy-hit punishment. | Your damage and progression rate. |
| Traps, not enemies, end attempts. | Damage Received From Traps | Environmental hazard damage. | Enemy encounters. |
| Levels arrive too slowly. | Experience Gained | Progression speed; up to three times is documented. | The immediate damage values in combat. |
| You need to explore without a death consequence. | Prevent Death | Failure severity. | Nothing about the run has the same risk as standard mode. |
| The game is hard to see, hear or control. | Accessibility tab | Presentation and input comfort. | Enemy strength and damage balance. |
Why the game uses this approach
Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse was released on 14 October 2026, with Konami as publisher and Evil Empire as developer according to its Steam listing. The listing showed 82% positive English-language reviews from 2,122 reviews on 18 October 2026. Those figures describe the release’s reception, not a difficulty recommendation, but they provide context for a game that deliberately keeps a demanding default mode while offering targeted assists.
Creative director Emmanuel Nouaille described the design priority as gameplay being fair
. Custom Mode follows that philosophy by letting a player identify the unfair-feeling part of their own experience—repetition, attrition, execution, progression or sensory load—and adjust that part rather than applying a universal easy preset.
Troubleshooting common problems
The option is missing
Make sure you are on the Gameplay tab, not Controls or Accessibility. From a run, the route is pause → System → Settings → Gameplay. From the title screen, open Settings directly from the main menu.
The game still feels too hard after one change
Play long enough to test the specific problem you changed. If boss runbacks are solved but the boss remains too punishing, the respawn option addressed repetition, not combat. Add a combat modifier only if combat is independently blocking progress.
You changed too much and want the original challenge back
Return to Settings → Gameplay, turn Custom Mode off, and verify the toggle before continuing. If achievements are important, use the unmodified run rather than relying on memory about which settings were active earlier.
Recommended starting presets
- Purist: Custom Mode off; use only normal leveling and the separate accessibility controls.
- Low-repetition: Allow Respawn In Front Of Boss Doors on; leave combat and progression unchanged.
- Resource-friendly: Increase Maximum Number Of Potions; keep enemy and trap damage standard.
- Gentler combat: Choose either higher Damage Dealt or lower Damage Received From Enemies, not both initially.
- Faster progression: Increase Experience Gained, up to the documented three-times setting.
- Practice mode: Prevent Death, understanding that this removes the normal failure condition and can affect achievement eligibility.
For most players who want help without flattening the game’s identity, the low-repetition, resource-friendly or single combat-modifier presets are the best starting points. They preserve the parts of Belmont’s Curse that are not causing the problem.
