Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse has no Easy, Normal, or Hard selector. Instead, its optional Custom Mode in the Gameplay settings lets you tune combat, healing, experience, and boss runbacks. The same settings menu also contains separate controls for motion, readability, audio, subtitles, and input, so you can make the game more comfortable without necessarily reducing enemy difficulty.
This guide explains exactly where every option lives, what each modifier changes, and which settings affect achievements.

How difficulty works in Belmont’s Curse
Destructoid described the game at launch on October 15, 2026 as having no traditional difficulty option. You will not choose Easy, Normal, or Hard when starting a new save. The opening setup asks for text and voice language, your confirm-button preference, and a brightness calibration; it also offers Deactivate tutorials, which is off by default.

It is a collection of individual gameplay modifiers rather than a single preset. You can remove tedious repetition while leaving combat intact, or substantially lower the execution and survival requirements.

Where to find Custom Mode
- From the main menu, choose SETTINGS.
- Open the GAMEPLAY tab.
- Enable Custom Mode, then adjust the individual modifiers that appear.
Settings can also be changed during an active run. Press Esc, open the SYSTEM tab, choose SETTINGS, and then select GAMEPLAY. On PC, Q and E move between tabs, Space applies a change, and Backspace closes the menu. The footer provides commands to restore the selected tab’s defaults or restore all defaults.
The achievement warning
AllThingsHow reports an in-game warning above the Custom Mode controls: “Changing the following options will affect the game balance. This may negatively impact the gaming experience. Use with caution.” A second warning states: “Some achievements will be unobtainable if ‘Custom Mode’ is enabled.” That warning is the key trade-off. Accessibility adjustments such as subtitles, outline brightness, or lower screen shake are separate from Custom Mode; the documented achievement warning specifically concerns enabling Custom Mode.
If you are pursuing achievements, start that save with Custom Mode disabled and leave it disabled. If your priority is finishing the campaign comfortably, enable only the modifiers that solve your particular problem.
Custom Mode modifiers explained
Each option changes a different part of the challenge. The table separates relief from repetition, because a boss-door checkpoint can save time without making the boss itself easier, while a damage multiplier directly changes combat execution.
| Modifier | What it does | How it changes the experience |
|---|---|---|
| Allow Respawn In Front Of Boss Doors | After defeating a boss, Rose respawns outside that boss door. | Removes the walk back and repeated traversal after a failed attempt while preserving the boss fight’s mechanics. |
| Damage Dealt | Raises Rose’s damage by as much as five times, or lowers it for a harder run. | Higher values shorten encounters and reduce the precision required to complete them; lower values create a more demanding challenge. |
| Maximum Number Of Potions | Increases how many potions Rose can hold simultaneously. | Provides more recovery opportunities without changing enemy attack patterns or Rose’s damage. |
| Prevent Death | Rose cannot die from damage. | Removes the survival consequence of mistakes, making it the strongest direct reduction in combat risk. |
| Damage Received From Enemies | Adjusts the damage Rose takes from enemy attacks. | Lower incoming damage gives you more room to learn patterns; higher incoming damage makes contact more punishing. |
| Damage Received From Traps | Adjusts damage caused by environmental traps. | Targets hazards specifically, so enemy encounters can remain unchanged. |
| Experience Gained | Can increase experience gain by as much as three times. | Accelerates progression and reduces the amount of combat or exploration needed to reach upgrades. |
Choosing the least disruptive help
Use Allow Respawn In Front Of Boss Doors when the problem is a long runback rather than the boss itself. It removes repetition and preserves the learning loop of watching patterns, dodging, and finding attack openings.
Use Maximum Number Of Potions when you understand encounters but run out of healing during longer sections. It changes resource margin rather than enemy behavior.

If you are taking too much damage while learning, lower Damage Received From Enemies or Damage Received From Traps. These settings let you keep normal damage output, so fights still require you to engage with their mechanics.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIncrease Damage Dealt when a particular encounter is exhausting or when you want a shorter campaign. The maximum documented boost is five times normal damage. Increase Experience Gained up to three times when progression, rather than individual fights, is slowing you down.
Prevent Death is appropriate when failure itself is the barrier—for example, if repeated deaths prevent you from seeing later areas. Because it removes the normal death consequence, it changes the game’s survival demand more than any other listed option.
Can you combine modifiers?
Yes. Custom Mode is granular, so you can combine a boss-door respawn with extra potions, or adjust trap damage without touching enemy damage. The settings screen’s balance warning applies to the mode as a whole, and enabling Custom Mode can make some achievements unobtainable.
Accessibility settings that do not change enemy difficulty
Belmont’s Curse separates sensory and control accessibility from gameplay balancing. You can improve visibility, reduce motion, change audio levels, remap controls, or disable vibration without selecting a lower combat setting.

- Vibrations: on
- Screen shake intensity: 1.0
- High Readability: off
- Player outline colour: black
- Enemy outline colour: black
- Outline brightness: 1.0
- Outline thickness: 0.5
Lower Screen shake intensity if camera movement causes discomfort or makes it difficult to track Rose. To make characters stand out from busy scenery, enable High Readability first. That unlocks the player and enemy outline rows, where you can adjust colour, brightness, and thickness independently. Increasing thickness and brightness is useful when Rose or enemies blend into dark or detailed backgrounds.
These visual changes affect presentation and identification, not enemy health, attack timing, or damage. They therefore address motion sensitivity and visual contrast without invoking the Custom Mode achievement warning.
Vibration and motion-free play
The official PS5 product listing includes options to play without motion controls, without touch controls, without controller vibration, and without adaptive-trigger effects. Turn those off if involuntary movement, tactile feedback, or trigger resistance is uncomfortable. The same listing counts ten accessibility feature entries in total, including these controls, subtitles, remapping, and audio options.

Audio sliders and subtitles
The PC AUDIO tab provides separate sliders for Master, Music, Sound effects, Dialogues, and Onomatopoeia; each defaults to 1.0. You can reduce onomatopoeia while leaving spoken dialogue audible, or lower music and effects independently instead of reducing the entire mix.
PlayStation’s listing also describes individual volume controls and subtitles for the main story and main characters. Subtitles are useful when dialogue is difficult to hear, while separate volume controls let you keep the sounds that provide gameplay cues at a comfortable level.
Controls, remapping, and reminders
The CONTROLS tab separates controller settings from keyboard-and-mouse settings on PC. The documented keyboard defaults are:

If a default conflicts with your keyboard, mouse, or physical access needs, use the controls menu to remap it. PlayStation lists basic controller remapping, control reminders, and tutorial reminders. It also lists offline pausing, which is useful if you need to interrupt play without an online connection.
Changing settings before or during a run
Before starting a save
- Choose SETTINGS from the main menu.
- Use CONTROLS for remapping, ACCESSIBILITY for visual and vibration options, GAMEPLAY for Custom Mode, VIDEO for display options, AUDIO for volume and dialogue mix, and LANGUAGE for language choices.
- Apply the changes. On PC, press Space to apply and Backspace to close.
There is no difficulty step in the New Game flow. If you want a normal achievement-focused run, verify that Custom Mode is off before creating or loading the save.
During a run
- Press Esc.
- Select the SYSTEM tab.
- Choose SETTINGS.
- Open the tab containing the option you need and apply the change.
This lets you reduce screen shake, change audio levels, remap a control, or alter Custom Mode without returning to the title screen. Remember that enabling Custom Mode mid-run still carries the documented achievement warning.

“I want less repetition, not an easier boss.”
Enable Allow Respawn In Front Of Boss Doors. Leave damage, enemy damage, and Prevent Death unchanged so the boss retains its normal execution requirements.

“The screen movement makes me uncomfortable.”
In ACCESSIBILITY, lower Screen shake intensity. If vibration or trigger effects are also uncomfortable on PS5, disable vibration and adaptive-trigger effects. None of these presentation changes is a Custom Mode modifier.
“I lose Rose in the background.”
Turn on High Readability, then raise outline brightness and thickness or select more contrasting player and enemy outline colours. High Readability must be enabled before those outline controls can be edited.
“I can hear effects but miss dialogue.”
Keep Dialogues at a comfortable level and reduce Music, Sound effects, or Onomatopoeia separately. Enable subtitles for the story and main characters on supported PlayStation configurations.
“I am stuck because every death sends me too far back.”
Start with the boss-door respawn option. If survival is still the problem, lower incoming enemy or trap damage. Reserve Prevent Death for a run where avoiding death is itself preventing progress, because it removes the normal consequence of taking lethal damage.
What to choose for an achievement run
Keep Custom Mode disabled throughout an achievement-focused save, because the settings warning says some achievements become unobtainable when it is enabled. You can still use the separate accessibility tools: adjust screen shake, outlines, vibration, audio, subtitles, and controls to suit your needs. Those options improve comfort, readability, and input without being listed as Custom Mode modifiers.
For every other play style, change only the setting that addresses the obstacle. Boss-door respawn targets repetition, potion capacity targets resource pressure, incoming-damage controls target survivability, damage dealt targets encounter length, experience gain targets progression speed, and Prevent Death targets lethal failure. That one-at-a-time approach keeps the rest of Belmont’s Curse close to its intended challenge while making the specific friction manageable.
